I create a directory named after the project and have separate voice, video, photo directories under it. I don't like junking lots of files together especially video and photo.
One thing to be aware of that happened to me recently:
I stretched my photos to 16:9 in the program and for some reason the next time I opened my project it was looking for the stretched files suddenly in my USERS folder on C: drive under renamed files of the date I did the stretch.
I believe this could have been caused by me not saving right after the stretch and the program crashed. Upon reload, it looked elsewhere for the photos.

This should be a lesson for all and I see this more and more as we have migrated from DOS.
Maybe even a sticky.
The first thing you want to do after downloading the installation and upgrade files is to burn them to a disk or Thumb Drive immediately for safe keeping. Then create a directory on you computer like:"PD9 Backup Installation" and put the files there also.
I see this too much as windows seems to take file management skills away from people. With DOS we had to know file management and directory organization to do almost anything. Windows was just a graphic shell so people could launch programs easier.
Everyone knows I'm over 40 now.
Enjoy that new computer Max!!!

I get the same when I load a big project. It hangs for a while and windows tells me the Program Has Stopped Working but it eventually loads if I wait and give it time.
Is there any way then to alter the timeout setting in windows before giving the error if it is the cause in OP's message? I don't want to hijack the thread though if issues are unrelated.

Thanks for the replies
I will try exporting just the SS track and I guess that means deleting everything else.
I tried this with my voice overs and it seemed the produced file took all the voices overs and put them end on end with no space in between. Maybe my voice clips got pressed together when I deleted everything else ?
I give the SS a try at some point.

I like the fact I can easily export to a folder to use on another computer. I don't see any thing related to the smartsound files though in the exported to folder.
Is there a work around for this. It would be nice if maybe I could just produce 1 track that is the SS track and use the file it creates as a source of my SS incorporated into what turned out to be a big project. Or it would be nice if PD9 knew this and created a sound-file for me.
The directory it made is huge with all the files jumbled in, maybe I didn't notice a smartsound file ?

This program has it quirks at times and I agree. You have to find the work a rounds.
I'm merging projects as on work a round.
I'm sure this post will not last long either.
Be careful of libel though if you plan do as you suggest and you video hits the airwaves where many can view it.

Both
There is a little half second stutter at the transition in produced and previewed movie.
I'll see if swapping out transitions will make a difference.
|
|
I have a few transitions that are choppy with a video stutter and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and can suggest ways of making the transition smoother.
I'm sure there may be some questions I need answering before I can rectify this.
I would appreciate if we can discuss a possible cause and solution.

That works for when inserting from the library and quite well I must say.
I have the hunch you just can't then drag a clip from one part of the timeline and insert it easily between two clips. The clip really needs to come directly from the library.
That's no biggie.
Thanks as that tip helps a lot and saves me from trying to position the cursor exactly by freehand.
|
|
I want to move/drag a vidoe clip between 2 other adjacent clips. When I do this I get Insert/overwrite prompt. Sometimes when I choose insert, the clip actually splits one of the adjacent clips.
How can I precisely tell the program, where to insert the clip that is selected. It seems to be trial and error.
Do I have to remove it from the time line altogether, position the timeline cursor, and then reinsert it to where the cursor is ?

Thanks for providing that.
I'll look through it. At first glance, it looks well organized and easy to read.
Nice over view.
The Export function is good. I never realized what it did (as pack project materials didn't translate into Export to Folder for use in another computer) and it goes well with my crazy file management style.
Its also nice to know I can de-noise if needed.
This file you linked to will make a big difference in getting the most out of the program. I'm still poking at the user manual; but that's slow going. I like this guides format.

Well once I split my MTS files form my Panasonic HD camera, the audio part becomes a WAV file automatically and can be edited in WAV editor.
I assume MTS is the same or similar AVCHD format.
|
|
It should.
Import the video and split/unlink the audofrom it.
Then click on the audio part and select edit in wave editor.

Thanks for the prompt reply
Well I do my voice overs with a separate program called Total Recorder.
I now use the MP3 setting in the attachment provided.
I wonder if I should be using a diff setting and that's why I made that a separate post. It seems now the WAV files are OK for some reason. Some Elves came in and fixed them while I was away.
This lets me manage my files better in terms of naming them, putting them in my voice directory for that project, and then processing them if needed.
I guess my main question is:
I'm wondering if I should be doing one big narration and splitting it in PD9 and then aligning it with the video rather than doing lots of small voice overs then shuffling them about to align them with the video.
I'm not crazy about the PD9 voice recorder as I seem to have no control over the file names and it seems to need a video in the track for the recorder to work.
I do a lot of do overs and PD9 puts them all into the library and I have to go back and get rid of the ones I don't want while with TR I simply choose not to save if I feel the VO wasn't good.
I like writing my script in powerpoint then doing all the voice overs with specific names and then importing them into the libray when needed.
For instance I had 10 VO's for the woodfrog segment and as I add the video segment I line up to VO's all named in a similar fashion.
I wish PD9 would let me assign a few diff folders for specific file types rather than trying to force everything in the Export folder and into the library immediately.
I am big on file management and organization of files.
I have voice, video, sound, photos all in diff folders. And under main folders RAW MMEDIA and Used MMEDIA.
The goal is for when I am done, I have no unused files in the project directories and I can copy all the projects files to a DVD for future edits and safe keeping and easy access.

For some reason my Wav voice overs sounded horrible with lots of noise so I post processed all 30+ of them to remove noise. That was a lot of work. But after a break and a reeboot, for some reason all the bad WAV's sounded good again. I can't figure that out; so I did all that work for nothing.
But this brings up a question. Would it be easier and more efficient for processing speed if I made a few large voice overs with all the voice content spaced that would allow me to split the voice over into individual VO's while in PD9 instead of making lots of separate VO's ?
I'm thinking that if ever post processing (noise reduction or volume control) is needed, I will only have to process a few files and not 30+ like I did yesterday.
I have an older soundblaster FI Xtreme gamer and actually use a USB mic for voice overs. There are so many driver and setting present in my voice controls; I would not know what I may have changed to get my recorded WAV file voice quality restored after a reboot.
Funny as my music MP3's sounded fine no matter what so I thought it was the WAV files that were bad.

|
I had this same exact problem. Everything else played the file and even in the library but it was silent in the track.
Reason was I exported it out to a 32bit file instead of back to a 16bit file after post processing it. I thought the quality would be better but it would not play at all in the track.
That's all I can think of.

I'm glad you posted this as I have a NVIDIA card and get frozen on 1% for a 10 minute video doing the same.
Later, maybe tomorrow, I'll try again and turn all the acceleration of also like you did.
I doubt its specific to ATI then.

To go a step further. You can run CCLEANER if you have it in order to clean out the registry of the old PD8 before installing PD9.
I always find entries of PD in my registry after an uninstall.
|
|
Can I ask if you are running a vanilla version of windows. I tell people my computer has been trouble free for over ten years but tha'ts only with vanilla windows. I always had problems with OEM windows and all the spy/advertising gunk they embed into it.
There is nothing like installing your own vanilla windows and you choosing whats installed or not.

Thanks Jeff
It would also be nice to have a spare card as my card in now longer under warranty since BFG had quit the card business.
I like those comparisons you provided.
|

Thanks Bubba. I'm not the SLI type and never needed SLI or even felt the need for it.
I still don't see why SLI is needed as one GREAT card in a great system can do any game well IMO. Who needs frame rates the human eye can probably not process given the human eye has 1/30 sec shutter speed.
I have had a good PD9 day today. I adjusted my virtual memory and removed a lot of the fancy stuff from windows such as animations and a shadowed cursor etc.
I reinstalled PD9 and it seems to be responding well today.
