Audio works in library but not in timeline

Hello, I have searched the forums extensively for a solution to this problem related to audio working in the library, but not in the time. Hopefully I didn't overlook something! I am using PD9 version 9.0.0.2702 and looked at your suggestions for general troubleshooting. That guided me to update PD9 and to update my video drivers on my PC, which I completed yesterday afternoon. Just now have had time to send you the files and request your help. A little background...

My problem stems from audio working for the library files when previewed, but not working after the video clips have been dragged into the timeline. Interestingly, video files generated by my Canon handheld 1080p video cam do not experience this problem...and the audio track in that case shows a visible soundwave, unlike what I have attached, where it shows a flat line. These were shot with my Droid Incredible video cam. I have checked the Edit Audio, as a first guess, and sound setting is at 50, and volume on the PC and in the Preview screen are maxed, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I have checked my phone specs and the files are shot in MP4 format and imported as *.3gp files. Any ideas as to why the audio doesn't work with files shot with my phone? Perhaps a codec issue?

I attach the dxdiag.txt file for the PC that I use (and it currently has 3GB of RAM, but will have 5GB of RAM by the weekend...didn't realize I was under the recommended specs there), a PD9 screenshot of the troublesome files that are misbehaving, as well as a short video file taken on my Droid Incredible...the cam that created the troublesome files.

Let me know what else you may need. Thanks so much for your help. PD is an awesome product. Just hoping my phone can interface with it..that would be great!

Best,
Jeff

I had this same exact problem. Everything else played the file and even in the library but it was silent in the track.

Reason was I exported it out to a 32bit file instead of back to a 16bit file after post processing it. I thought the quality would be better but it would not play at all in the track.

That's all I can think of.

Thanks Bubba. Glad that it works for you...but it's not for me. Wish I knew why....

My hope in posting to this forum was for someone related to the development of PD9 to respond at some time. Am I posting in the wrong thread, just not being patient enough, or what?!?

Hi Jeff -

Just to confirm what Bubba found. The audio from your .3gp video works fine in my PD9, in both the media library & timeline.

Cheers - Tony

3gp = a quicktime file format.
Your system lacks the correct decoding codec to read the 3gp file - this isn't a PD9 issue but a "your system" issue.

Hope that helps you.

Dafydd, Jeff, Bubba et al -

Dafydd - I don't pretend to completely understand how codecs function in combination with an OS & different software, but it was Jeff's statement (above) that led me to think that wasn't the issue. My lay brain would suggest to me that if PD is able to "read" the audio from the .3gp file in the media library, the same would apply in the timeline.

There have been quite a few reports (including mine) of variance of behaviour of audio files from
(a) Windows/other software > PD, or
(b) PD's Media Library > timeline.

I'm not suggesting that it's absolutely NOT a codec issue... just that I don't understand it properly, & I'd like to.

Jeff - it certainly would be worth determining what codecs are on your system, &/or installing an appropriate codec pack to see whether that will resolve your .3gp problem.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony,
I understand where you're coming from and "often" it is system defined rather than PD9. Now if it didn't play in your system and in Bubba's and mine, I'm sure I would be shouting a different tune.

I have had samples from cameras that perform differently when split due to the codec used. We've had audio incidences recently where the camera uses a codec which cause problems. However not with 3gp. Now I cant be sure, just as you cant be but I'm "hoping" the application of a codec pack may correct the issue.... but it might not.

The 2702 update fixed a number of QT .mp4 read/audio issues.

Thanks
Dafydd

Thanks everyone for your assistance. I installed the ffdshow't codec pack, but perhaps not correctly. It's a confusing little beastie. I let it install as it appeared to want to, didn't check or uncheck any boxes, but the sound is still not working after I drag the .3gp file into the timeline. Any other suggestions, on the codec install, a different codec pack, or otherwise.

As always, thanks.

Did you carry out the uninstall of PD and the uninstall of QuickTime?
Only after that should you reinstall PD9 and test.

Is that what you did?

You can go to Control Panel and uninstall both programs.
Start > control Panel > All CP items > Programs and features >
locate Quicktime - highlight and uninstall
locate CyberLink PowerDirector > highlight and uninstall

Thanks
Dafydd

nope...hadn't done that. I suppose I will need to dig up my online purchase info, since that's how I got PD9...or is there a login online where I can do that?

Thanks

while not an expert, i have been the victim of some codec which allow one to play them, but not encode in that format (they usually want money for that priviledge!)

Could that be the case, Sony used to do that, but i thought they got better about that lately

Main Concept DV comes to mind.

Rocket-Scientist : I have that codec somewhere... it used to be considered the best lossless codec for DV.

jbmecham: Please look to where you downloaded the program executable files to on your hard drive. Secure download links provided at the time of purchase are time limited and are unlikely to be still working.

Thanks
Dafydd

Finally getting around to doing the uninstall/re-install you suggest. Was on travel for awhile and needed to get the CD from home, as the download link was likely expired. So here's the rub - if it is indeed the case that the quicktime codecs are the issue, the install of PD9 form the CD installs quicktime, and there's no custom install menu, so it appears unavoidable. The point here was to uninstall quicktime and PD9 and then reinstall PD9 with the custom ffdshow codec packs already installed. any ideas on how best to proceed here, based on our previous discussions in this thread so that the *.3gp files from Droid Incredible Video Cam will have sound when dragged into the timeline?

Thanks for any ideas anyone may have...

Just as a little aside, the above message was posted on 11 April. Just now, on 12 May (here in OZ), I received an email notification that a message had been posted. It's a month late (like most of my bill payments!)

On the 3gp issue... I wasn't aware that PD installed QuickTime as part of its package. If that's the case, it would almost certainly be an outdated version. I would download & install the latest version of QT, after your PD installation.

Anyway - given that it's a month later, you've probably happily solved the problem by now!

Cheers - Tony

Thanks ynot fish. I did. I uninstalled quicktime, uninstalled PD9, installed the ffdshow codec pack and re-installed PD9..and all is well!

Thanks for everyone's help!
