Hey,

I use the free util called interestingly enough Freemake video convertor: http://www.freemake.com/

Give this a try. It's pretty easy to use. Let us know if a different format works for you.

Before I bought my Sony PJ7xx series camcorder I had a good look at a Pro series digital camera. But decided I needed a dedicated camcorder that could do well over an hour non stop recording for certain situations- in one file without any manufacturer auto splits. (This was before I even knew how to use an NLE like PD.) My wife has been hinting she wants a Pro series camera and the Canons are on the short Christmas wish list.

Rob
Hi BD,

Just a thought: Have you updated to the latest Qucktime player on your computer?

I see you have the ASUS G750 very nice. I have an older G50 that is stick rock solid that I recently turned into an HTPC.
Btw- in case your system didn't auto update the full version of Nvidia video driver 320.49 is now out.

From my own experiments with PD I find that the it has issues previewing .avi and .MOV files properly.
Not sure if you have already seen this link regarding .MOV files: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/28871.page

I get blackout screens and irritating unexplained glitches when using these file formats. I generally just convert them to another format like MPEG4 or else .WMV to save myself this headache. (Yes I know not something that should be done in a paid prgm. My video camera does full AVCHD .m2ts files so PD works great with these, so the .avi & .MOV files I use from other sources is minimal.)

From your .doc link showing a screenshot you have a lot of splits and you are using the built in subtitle feature.
I find the more splits of the offending files PD does not play well with- causes more blackouts. I assume you need the splits for emphasis and matching up the audio to the subtitling.

Rob
Tony,

How long is your clip?

I tried an unmodified 5 sec. and an 8 sec repeating clip of my own and could not replicate this.
I used the standard fade and also tried blur fade transition. I even did the modified cross as you show in pic #4 and removed the blue audio transition.

(For those following along you just modify your transition to cross and then select the lower blue audio transition, then right click remove. This leaves the upper video fade still intact and removes the lower blue fade transition. This only works for cross not overlap transitions though.)

Can you attach a produced vid. showing what you mean by "glitch" or better yet the raw clip for us to play with?

Rob
Hi Dafydd,

I just tried linking a Youtube url that began with "https" and it did not work.

I finally got it to work by dropping the "s" and changing the beginning of the url to "http"
Can you verify when you get a chance please.

thanks.

Rob
Wid0wmaker123,

Everyone will have their personal criteria and levels of usage. In addition to a computer system that is capable of running a video editing system, you have to define what it is you are looking to do with the chosen editing software.

Are you going to be a casual user who edits the occasional family / event video or are you going to want a more robust feature rich suite that you can grow with and use for more advanced editing output later on? Price to features performance is another factor- depending on your budget of course.

This can be hard thing substantiate- in the end you will have to take a good look at your needs and cost of the features you are willing to afford. (The good thing is all the PD versions are affordable compared to similar products in the given price ranges.)

The trial versions are the best way to get a feel for the products. (Just be aware some of the features in the trial version might not work as well as the full version- the trial is just to give you a feel for the features.)

Oh and yes if you bought today you can uninstall and then reinstall to your new computer.

Rob
Hi Roxanne,

In addition to the Borgus' suggestion perhaps this will help:

Any questions just ask. Others more knowledgeable about your Menu issue should be able to chime in shortly.

Rob

[Edit- aha ! finally got the youtube embedding feature to work. It did not like "https" so had to change the url to begin with "http" instead.]
Lois,

Just curious- what program are you using to record ?

Have you tried a conversion program to convert the 30fps files to 25fps?
(there should be free programs on the web. I use one called Freemake, but not sure if it will do PAL video.)

Here is the link for reference: http://www.freemake.com/

Rob
Mike,

Sorry to hear about your friend. This is a frustration that you don't need right now.
Hopefully others can chime in.

I don't have a solution for you but a suggestion- can you hook up a laptop to the screen at the memorial service and just use your media player to play the file? Just in case you don't get this issue resolved in time.

Rob
Also just a shot in the dark here - if you have Catalyst Control Center try uninstalling it.

See this post for more info: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/28244.page

Rob

"Look in Preference settings Preference>Settings> Uncheck "Automatically load sample clips ....."

Dafydd,
You know I did this when I first started using PD and then totally forgot this setting even existed! Brain fade.
thanks.

Ian,

Have you tried this also?

Rob
FYI- If you can't see the folder then it's hidden.
For Win 7 follow instructions in this link to view hidden folders: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/

For Win 8 go to your folder select "View" menu located on top of folder and check "Hidden Items."

Rob
Joe,

To help tame Win8 until you get used to it try Classic Shell which is free and restores the Start button and menu like Win7.

Click the green download link.

iandh2010 ,

Just a thought- that "tram.wmv" is a sample 3D clip of- you guessed trams / trains running on a track.

These clips are totally unnecessary once you started using PD - you can experiment with them but I just remove them from my library to stop them from auto loading into PD whenever I start the prgm. (They are not deleted, still on my hd in the location you mentioned for NTSC and PAL.)

Try this:

Move the tram.wmv file to another location or else rename it to: tram.wmv.bak
Now try starting PD again and see if that moves things along.

Rob
Hey when you are done the video I'd like to see it.
I have one with a woman on a cell phone crossing 4 lanes of traffic in front of me oblivious to the cars that have to slow down in order not to hit her.

I rolled my window down and yelled: "Get off the phone!" which startled her as I drove past. Not the best video clip, my camera wasn't mounted tightly so it was a bit too jumpy. But I get a laugh whenever I watch it.

Rob
Dan,

I just tried it also and found the exact behavior you describe.
I also did the VMR7 to VMR9 modification that Tony links to.

Rob
In what format is your video file ? Can you rename those files and then save them to different directories?

The only other ways I can think of is to either use your camera software to cut it into segments and rename those segments before saving or

Drag the video into PD and cut it into segments- remove the parts you don't want and then Produce the clip to a file. Rename that file as you like.

Rob
Try saving them in the "Customs" directory of the PIP Object Room instead.
This is where I save all my created object files like you have.
They are then available for all new projects whenever I want them.

I do the same for my customs Titles - save them to the "Custom" directory of the Title Room.
As well move other effects into the "Favorites" directory and they are then ready and waiting for you.

Rob

[Edit to add- You can make a TEMPLATE project with all your favorite media that you save as suggested previously and that will have the media such as an intro video clip / sound file etc. when you click on it. Doing what I stated above will still have all those Custom objects / effects and Favorites ready for you regardless.)
Try this:

Drag or Import your video clip into the Power Director Media Content Library- (top left window)
Then drag that video clip to the timeline Video track #1

Click on the video clip- you will see a "Split" button in the top left of the timeline.
Move your red line slider which is the Timeline scrubber, to the 5-10 second mark and click on the Split button.
Keep moving your scrubber to 5-10 second intervals and Split.

Now click and hold on the top of the timeline just above the video clips and move the timeline to the right.
This will expand the video track and make the 5-10 second clips larger so you can edit them.

Now click a video clip.
Important: Use the scrubber to highlight the clip and make sure to move the little yellow arrows on either side of the red line to mark where you want to edit. Once you do that then more options such as "Copy," "Cut" "Remove" etc. will show up.

Rob
Quote: Thanks RobAC. That confirms what I was seeing in procexp.
Can you explain the difference between Produce video before burning and Produce fast video render?

Jimmy,

When you click the Produce tab you are rendering / encoding all your video sounds, transitions, effects etc. that you have edited into your movie. Produce literally "produces" your final complete video file.

Now Power Director offers you two ways of speeding up the video rendering in the bottom left of the Produce screen called Fast video rendering technology:

1. SVRT
see indepth discussion here: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/28170.page on how to enable it.
As well make sure to click on the "Intelligent SVRT" tab that is located top left below the "Device" & "Online" tabs. This will offer you the best SVRT setting to use. (Also when in "Edit" screen before "Produce" screen left click the Track Listing area in the lower left of the Edit screen and select "Show SVRT Track" to see the red / green areas that SVRT can produce and speed up. Only a few areas need this (red means video rendering required) - (green means video rendering not required.)

Yes I know it is confusing- see the link discussion above.

2. Hardware video encoder

The above two selections are used to harness the GPU to help the CPU speed up the rendering times of the video / movie file that is "produced."

I and others have found that it is a hit and miss in terms of video quality when using the above two Fast video rendering technologies.
So we do not use them. For Youtube vids my favourite mode of producing a file is:
WMV - Windows Media Video 9 1280 x 720/30p (6 Mbps) - This setting consistently produces the smallest, yet highest in video quality file for me without either SVRT or Hardware video encoder selected. It takes a bit longer to render this way- but I let the CPU alone do the heavy lifting.

If I am doing a quick rendering and full screen playback just to get an overall feel of how my video will look before final production, I will use a setting like MPEG-4 and it enables the "Hardware video encoder" option to speed up the video render. Then I can view that and make changes in "Edit" at the same time before I do a final Produce render using the WMV settings.
