You understand my description correctly. PowerDVD calls shrinking the letterbox bars on the top and bottom side – Instant Zoom. You call it cropping. The result is the same. As the picture grows vertically the sides are “cropped” and no longer display.
You state that PowerDVD does not support cropping (zooming) on BD video. Well, yes. I know. That why I asked the question.
You also imply that a DVD can be zoomed but not a Blu-ray because DVDs have more “feature” availability whereas Blu-ray has stronger encryption or something that prevents zooming. This is not true. Total Media Theater can play a 2.35:1 movie on a physical DVD from my PC BD drive and I can zoom it to any aspect ratio I like until it fills the entire 16:9 screen. I can also do this with a Blu-ray disc that has not been decrypted. Both physical media react exactly the same.
So the question remains, why can I zoom a DVD and not a Blu-ray. There is no technical reason preventing it since TMT does it with ease.
I have sent the question to tech support. We shall see what they have to say.
I have no idea if TMT does it with "ease" by their engineers, but TMT let user adjust it during BD playback.
To be clear, what I said is that DVD playback has more feature availabilities in "powerdvd", and cyberlink doesn't implement what you want (that legacy TMT has it) for BD in its program. Then, my conclusion: Video file > DVD >> BD >>> UHDBD .
Technical reason is not needed, as they jusy didn't implement it on BD.
So, if you want a 2.35:1 BD movie to be seamless displaying on 16:9 monitor by cropping, it is not available in powerdvd currently.
Just search the old topics on forum for users who own 21:9 monitor, you will get cyberlink conclusion without further asking.
They were talking about the same/similar feature you mentioned in TMT.

I am evaluating PowerDVD 17 to take the place of TMT6 on my Emby for WMC HTPC.
Is there a way to make Power DVD close when I press the Stop and/or Back button on my remote? Currently when I press Stop, it just stops the movie and the Power DVD window stays opened. I need the program to close so focus goes back to Emby for WMC.
Desperately looking for an external player option to replace TMT6. So far every other option I have tried has had some sort of quirk. I'm now trying Power DVD and everything appears to be GREAT except the question I am posing here.
Thanks in advance,
Rob
How about using a programmable remote controller, and configuring keyboard hotkeys "Alt+Tab" on any custom button of the remote?
It helps you switch window focus between active programs.

Are you talking about zooming 2.35:1 movie (encoded in 16:9 BD) on a 21:9 display, and cropping all borders for playback?
It's old story.
powerdvd does not support to fully cropping the borders on top and bottom parts on a 21:9 display currently.
No. I'm talking about shrinking the black letterbox bars on a 16:9 display. When I zoom with TMT I lose a little of the image on each side but the picture fills more of the space vertically. Since most Scope movies are composed with a "safe" 16:9 outline on the camera lens it is more immersive to have a wide-screen movie playback somewhere between 2.35:1 and 1.78:1 (the standard AR of a 4k TV.)
I can adjust the AR by zooming on a DVD but not a Blu-ray. I'm trying to find out why the function is crippled on a BD. It doesn't make sense since other players can do it.
If I understand your description correctly, shrinking the letterbox bars on top and bottom side = video cropping.
To place a 2.35:1 video in 16:9 aspect ratio BD, movie disc will plant the letter box in the video as part of video content to avoid stretching distortion on 1.78:1 display.
2.35:1 is very close to 21:9 AR. I think your scenario still matches my description.
powerdvd does not support cropping the video (so called pan and scan or something like that) on BD, regardless of the display AR.
It does not matter "it makes sense or not", just simply powerdvd does not do it on protected BD video.
The feature availability on DVD is greater than a non-decrypted BD in powerdvd, that's what I understood so far.
Video file > DVD >> BD >>>UHDBD.

I’m still using Total Media Theater for Blu-ray playback but since it hasn’t been supported for over two years I need to find a replacement. I have a 75” 4K TV and routinely use the TMT zoom function to modify a 2.35:1 picture into maybe a 2.15:1 aspect ratio. As long as there isn’t a lot of stuff going on at the edges it’s a very nice compromise between letterbox and full screen.
The Zoom function works for both Blu-ray and DVDs. Many other software player programs also have similar functions for Blu-ray video playback. I’d always heard that PowerDVD was the ultimate software player so I recently bought it. It does seem to do a good job and does everything that TMT does EXCEPT zoom a Blu-ray. Why is that?
It can’t be a “black bar” is part of a Scope picture. Probably not a licensing issue since other vendors are doing it. May some fundamental design of the player that won’t change aspect ratios on Blu-ray? Don’t know but if I can’t get a reason for it not working and will never work then I’ll get my money back and continue looking for a solution.

Which version of PDVD CDKey you input?
You need to input PDVD17 CDKey to do activation.
I used the PDVD17 key that was provided to me at purchase... what other key am I supposed to use?
Have you ever installed any "unofficial" versions of powerdvd before on your PC?
The cracker or keygen will add cyberlink server into hosts file or system, and block the formal version activation.
Then, your CD key will always show incorrect no matter you typed correctly or not.
My guess.

You may check the HDMI audio playback output's properties -> supported format in Windows audio setting "when" the Blu-ray movie was playing in powerdvd.
Windows 10 screwed up BD protected audio's HD audio passthrough often.
Per my understanding,
PCM decoded -> powerdvd does the surround sound decoding.
The decoded PCM audio is still "HD surround sound" that decoded from Dolby or DTS source.
Non-decoded audio passed to HDMI receiver -> amplifier hardware does the decoding. what speaker sets played is still a decoded PCM audio that from Dolby or DTS source.
May some audiophiles or experts tell us if there are any huge hearing differences between the software decoding and the amplifier decoding.

Hi all,
Can anyone help me on this, please? I want to have the PC Mode display column to be File Name instead of TItle. As some of my files are MKV files and these files have strange titles embedded into them. I know I can remove them but it's such a hassle.
Anyone know how I can use filename instead of TItle with PC mode, please?
Thanks.
FatKing
Just checked it myself, no filename available for sorting in powerdvd. It will go with title name first. fyi

If you don't skip the playback, and let it play to the end without any interrupt, does the problem still occur?
I think it is a issue that specifically happened on certain PCs, just contact support to get some advice from cyberlink.

I notice that PowerDVD17 has designated its folder as an exclusion from Windows Defender Antivirus. If I understand correctly, this means that if malware gets placed into the PowerDVD17 folder, Windows Defender will never find it, much less get rid of it.
Is this danger really necessary?
Although I don't use Windows defender, powerdvd does not add itself as an exception in my antivirus software (Norton).
I think a software player is not so powerful that able to add itself as an exception on other antivirus software exclusion list automatically.
Have you ever added it in exclusion previously while launching powerdvd process, then you just forget it?
If it is a firewall exclusion but not virus exclusion, the firewall software will ask for your consent while the program connected to the Internet or network at first time.
However, powerdvd does not have any virus/malware detected by my antivirus software so far.
Try to remove it from your exclusion list, and then check if the playback features work.

Hey guys!
I recently bought a copy of powerdvd 17, and it worked flawlessly. Until sometime a week ago.
I always watch videos i have on my pc, which is plenty powerful...
So last week i wanted to watch a movie, double clicked it, powerdvd opens and... full black screen, have to force close the program.
Then i decided maybe if i open powerdvd first, then click the file maybe it'd run... well... no. A small black screen pops up for a second and goes away again, which renders me unable to use the software to play videos.
It ain't the file, cuz the same file worked the week before and still works in the new build of VLC (thank god it now supports 4k hdr) which is free.
I tried updating, reinstalling it and still, nothing works.
I really like the software, but this is just plain awful for a paid player.
Hope to get a response soon
Were your GPU driver updated by yourself or Windows auto update recently?
Any suspected factor or changes on PC ring the bell?

It's a old story.
powerdvd does not suppot dolby atmos decoding regardless of audio device type.
but, dolby atmos can be recapped as dolby true hd for all dolby true hd compatible device or player.

Please read this thread, I am too lazy to repeat everything again for you:
https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/64121.page
CyberLink gave you The Advisor, now it is up to you to meet the requirements. So do not ask what is wrong with PDVD because the answer is nothing. Ask what is wrong with your mobo, BIOS, Intel SGX, Intel ME, HDMI, HDCP etc.
Another problem may be in you, because if you wrote "I tried everything", it is obvious you did not. Building a PC is not a job for everyone.
Oh so sorry for it
I followed all the post. But acording to your answer, i can see now your system is running nice, with no problems about it.
Who is lazy to see the way how you answer is me.
How many many money pay to you Cyberlink to answer in this way?????
This is not the way to help the people.
If you wants to seek support from cyberlink, contact their support.
If you wants the community to support, raise the topic here.
advisor faqs from cyberlink (not limited to here I posted) could be your friend/free consultant.
It might take less than 10~20 mins to read or use all of them depending on your PC knowledge.

And, I think that builting a UHDBD pc is not the responsibility of a software manufacturer.
Users purchased their hardware and paid the money to hardware manufacturers.
All of us might need to understand that hiring/paying an exclusive IT guy to troubleshoot PC issues or assist builting a PC is much expensive than purchasing a retail software license.

I was hoping that PowerDVD 17 will allow me to watch Blu-rays, specially 3D blu-rays with a VR headset like the Oculus Rift., but that doesn't seem to be the case, only downloaded videos.
Is there any plans to implement that?
Thanks!
In addition to the player, as I remembered, Oculus does not have HDCP hardware level support originally.

After configured the file association from control panel default program settings, edit the reg key on your way manually.
Does it work for your case?
I'm not shure what you suggest?
What controlpanel? You mean settings inside PowerDVD?
I already edited the registry as I mentioned but right-clicking on for example a .jpg shows open with PowerdDVD 17 as an option.
That is what I'd liked to remove, if I can find the right key/keys in registry.
Best regards,
Mike

Hello!
Planning on buying PowerDVD 17.
Installed the trial version and noticed somethings I would like to edit.
I will only use PowerDVD for playing BD/DVD and nothing else.
I will only use PC Mode.
Using Windows 7 x64.
I can edit the UI settings to remove all unwanted associations (including ISO) and configure player UI settings as I would like it to show.
So far so good.
I also removed the "Play with CyberLink PowerDVD 17" registry key [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\$PowerDVD]
I like to have a clean right-click meny with as few items as possible.
There is one/several keys I can't find in registry and that is right-click on for example a .jpg picture and "Open with" --> and PowerDVD 17 shows up.
.jpg is not associated to PowerDVD so I'm confused why its there in right-clikc menu?
I'm very experienced with regedit and configuring the keys in there.
So if anyone can show me how to edit out "PowerDVD 17" from right-click menu that would be great!
Thanks and best regards,
Mike Gartner

The new TV mode is not with Windows Media Center any more.
https://www.cyberlink.com/support/product-faq-content.do?id=18953
Media Center has been phased out by MS since 2009, and removed directly in Windows 10.

I have a HDMI 1.4a non Atmos ready receiver
If i plug in one HDMI (Nvidia/AMD Audio) to my receiver for sound and one HDMI (Intel Kaby Lake VIdeo) to my UHD TV will Power DVD 17 work with UHD Blu-Ray?
ASFAIK It seems like you can only output audio via the main HDMI. Is this correct?
Do you set HDMI 1.4 (amd/nvidia) audio output as deafult playback device in Windows sound settings.
I don't have this kind of setup, but I may try the following configuration if I have the same hardware as yours:
- Set HDMI 1.4 (amd/nvidia) audio output as default playback device in Windows sound settings.
- Use Intel GPU's HDMI 2.0 port for 4k blu-ray video output.
- Set powerdvd audio setting as "use hdmi to check the audio and video playback.
However, it's my assumption, not verified yet.

How is it possible to play consecutive tracks (flac/m4a, etc.) of music albums designed to be played without interruption between them (without the slight pause and sometimes with a slight but audible click) ? TIA
Wolfie
If you are talking about the feature "gapless playback", then powerdvd does not support it.

My rig:
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti Superclocked. Has DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI outputs
Display 1: AOC i2267Fw monitor. GPU DisplayPort out > AmazonBasics DisplayPort to DVI cable > DVI in on monitor
Display 2: Another AOC 12267Fw monitor. GPU DVI out > AmazonBasics DVI cable > DVI in on monitor
Display 3: Vizio SV422XVT TV. GPU HDMI out > HDMI cable (can't recall brand) > HDMI 3 in on TV
I've tested PowerDVD on all three displays individually and get successful playback on all three, so the hardware and cabling is all fine. However, my default configuration is to duplicate the desktop on Displays 1 and 3, so that I can transmit audio and video from my PC to my TV without streaming. When in this configuration, PowerDVD throws a HDCP error on the duplicated desktop and only works from the unduplicated Display 2.
Is this a bug or a limitation in the software, or is there some sort of setting I can change so that it'll work on the duplicated desktop?
The main purpose of HDCP:
Prevent video access from other unauthorized devices, and prevent video from sharing/playing to multiple monitors concurrently.
Duplicate display mode won't pass HDCP, unless the protection is "cracked".

I think there are only few legtimately licensed software player on the market currently.
I'm wondering which BD software player you are refering to.
Those popular "free or freemium" BD players have controversial BD license, and probably use decryption way to break protection.
Then, all the protected video or audio will be output freely after cracking.
(It is not a legitmate way at intellectual property protection wise.)
