Yes, still kicking.
PD has bee inproved since that post. I now use PD14, one of the updates doubled the speed of Shadow File creation, so while it is a pain it does make editing of 4K possible.
Eugene
thanks! i am using PD15 is using shadow files just as fast as using a coverted clip to avi and doing the swaping out?
I have used Tony's suggestion and at the time ,using PD13 ? it did save time. With PD14 I think it is a wash, being lazy plays a part too.
My pc is fairly fast so it is not an issue any more, it simply is a part of the editing process to me. Since I only use 4K there is no way around it. Using HD you may not need to use it if the pc is fast enough.

Wonder what all the hubhub is about. Bought a LG16NS40 over 6 month ago, it will read my commercial UHD BD discs but of course cannot not decode the video. The PDVD 16 with upgrade or more likely PDVD 17 should do it with the correct GPU specs like GTX960.
Eugene
I think/guess all GPUs released before 2017 won't have the possibility to play UHD BD. It has nothing to do with GPU capability but compatibility.
HEVC 10bit decode, HDR, and new UHD BD protection all matters.
Purchase a set top UHD BD TV player is always the easiest way to play back it.
Correct me if anything wrong.
I too think that a dedicated UHD BR player like my $220.00 Samsung 8500 is the way to go. I do not play commercial HD BR on my pc there is a $40 player for that. Why tie up the pc for that?
What I really like to do is burn my own UHD BR disc using the PD software and video from a AX100 UHD camera

Eugene,
Always good to back up computer, but the problem is that many people don't realize they must retain the email which has the product keys as well as the downloaded program files, even after they've been installed. Seems to me this should be in bold print on the first line of the emails from CL that provide the keys and program files.
Good point, I doubt that I still have the email. However after downloading the upgrade from CY I burn it onto a DVD so that I can re-install later. The codes are written on the DVD cover but I also include a file so that the code can be used copy/paste.
I had to do that a couple of month ago when my i7 pc died and was replaced with a new i10 pc. I chose to install everything from scratch. The PC has 3 inexpensive trays that allow the three HDDs to be pluged in from the front, so they can be exchanged in less than a minute. That is how I make a clone and use that clone for a week to be replaced with the next clone. The clone is sitting in a desk drawer.
So if a HDD dies I just remove it and replace it with last weeks clone.
And FULL backups to two external HDDs as well. Belt AND suspenders.

Free software like AOMEI Backerupper could have prevented this dilemma.
I learned the hard way, over 10 years ago, to backup my PC having not just a backup but a clone as well.
And that has saved my hide many times.
Also partition your new hard drive, put the operating system and programs in partition C and videos in an other partition or better yet in an other HDD drive internal or external.
Live and learn.
Good luck

You have it checked, "activate HD processing". The imported files in the library will show a green tick in the left lower part of the image when they have been converted to SD = shadow files..
It is automatic once HD processing is on but will take some time for the conversion. You have a choice of SD resolution, I use the highest.
I think the moderator should delete this exchange.

No problem here on a 2015 Vizio on 4K USB as long as it is HEVC or anything via HDMI.
The reason I piped up is to ask if anyone has any news about UHD BR burning from any source.
Cyberling will have PC playback of commercial UHD discs by Feb. Hopefully burning that is not far behind.
I can play UHD HEVC BR burned as a file from a Samsung 8500 player but of course no titles or chapters, etc

PD does have Proxy Editing. It has to be activated, will then generate SD files used for editing. These are automatically replaced by the original video for the final product. I edit in 4K and for longer than 10 min it is a must to do proxy editing.
It works great and the availability of PE was the main reason I bought PD11, now using PD14.

I wish to have the ability to:
BURN UHD BR discs.
Even as an extra cost plugin.
Happy user of PD14 and see no reason to upgrade except for the above.

HI,
So I have a computer: Intel i7 6700K, 16GB of RAM and video graphics GTX 960, when I have to edit 4K video image is stuck, what are the system requirements for 4K? Video length 10 minutes.
MY PC is now basically identital to yours, 4K is a piece of cake as long as you use Shadowfiles. !0 min might work w/o them as long as you keep it simple, a few transitions and titles only.

All the pc options, including mine will do the job nicely, it is just that picture adjustment take time to do, that is all.

My 5 year old i7 win 7 pc died a few month ago. I only replaced the CPU, motherboard and new 16GB memory for around $600.00 and have now significantly increased the performance. Specs listed below.
For 4K videos shorter than 5 min there is no need to bother with shadowfiles, they are a must for anything much longer. Rendering is done in 4K HEVC at app 2x real time. The 4K UHD output is burned onto a 25 GB BR as a file that will play fine in the Samsung 8500 UHD BR player. They will not play on the Phillipps UHD player.
Picking the proper GPU is a major item. The GTX960 I bought a year ago cut the rendering time of a 90 min 4K HEVC from 3 1/2 days (while we did a cruise) to less than 4 hours. PQ is excellent.
Hope that CL will add real UHD burning soon. Anyone know of a editing program that does?.
I very rarely make color changes, just a few transitions and titles.
A Happy and Healthy New Year to All

What turned out to be the best driver for the GTX-960 running in win10?

Ability to author and burn UHD BR discs PLEASE

Have not made any HD 60P discs lately so I made a short one, 5 min long on a BR RE 25 disc.
Input 4K 30P, output settings BR 25GB. H264, HD 60P, Dolby 5.1, using Hardware encoder.
The resulting BR played fine on a SEIKI and Sony player. No menu or chapters used. Took less than 10 min.
Checked out ok in MEDIAINFO, a program you may want to download.
Last Pinnacle version must have been 16 or later, sold that version on eBay, still have 15. I went to PD because it was, in my opinion, a far better editing program.
Eugene
PS You may want to get some 25GB BD RE discs untill you have this pat

There still is some problem. While 60P HD burned with PD14 play on a Sony player they will not work on the Samsung UHD player. Yet 60P discs produced some time ago using Pinnacle Studio do work on both.
However I use stereo only.
Good luck
Eugene.

The Samsung K8500 UHD BR player will play 4K 264 and 265 HEVC video files of various formats burned onto a BR disc.
The Phillips player does not.
This is to me a temporay solution untill regular UHD BR SW becomes available
Eugene
Wish this %$#@@ had paste and dictionary!!!!

My disappointment was great whenPD15 came out without suitable burning SW for UHD BR. To this date I am unaware of such burning software being available from other sources.
The Samsung UBD K8500 will play 4K and other video files from its USB port as well as from a BD. So far it has played 265 HEVC and 264 4K and 2K files with bit rates to 100.
Unfortunately it cannot handle HD 60P discs burned by PD.
The Phillips UHD player handled HD 60P but none of the other files, it reports "no files"
So for me that is an interim solution untill we get the proper software to do this correctly.

The frustrating part is that they do exist, most (if not all)LG optical drives of recent vintage can do it. They read UHD BR discs files but of course cannot decrypt the data. The LGWH16NS40 is around $60
All that is needed is the software to burn the proper file structure so the player knows what to do with the disc.
Burning them is not an issue.

Thanks for the reply, BD? HE?
Turns out that all the MB have video connectors so I will go with i7 6700 or variant
