Provlima - I think you can see the general consensus is that laptops are not ideal for editing. If you have to use a laptop and need 4k editing it can be done. Here is a list of laptops for editing similar to Steve's but 4k editing is pushing the limits.

Shadow Files reply from Shadowman????
Sounds spooky...
Tony - Thanks for the info. Does that mean we are looking at low resolution shadow files in the preview window?

Hello AIS & Shadowman!
Firstly AIS(Al), Sorry, but a lot of what you said went completely over my head. As for SVRT, I find myself avoiding it of late as when I've used it in the past, it seemed to cut a portion out of the overall running time of my videos(only a few frames, but enough to render the result as less than the length of the video before rendering, this I select the option to view the clip as it renders, that way I know if I've missed any transitions and can cancel the render in order to make my corrections).
Neil.
Sorry Neil - Too much info. In spite of my long-winded attempt to explain - it's actually quite simple.
- Camera capture files like your HD MP4 files are highly compressd. Each generation loses some quality every time they are re-renderd. Compressed files are not ideal for editing for many reasons.
- Magic+PD just decompresses your camera HD MP4 files before PDR14 starts editing. How it works is not really important.
- You then edit as you normally would (no shadow files) and produce your H.264 MP4 - or whatever you want.
It's a normal process used in all professional editing software.
It's not complicated and really worth a try.

I've often wondered if shadow files are used for proxy editing (Proxy Video Editing is a process where you create temp lower quality Standard Definition copies of your original HD videos in the timeline for speed. Edits are then applied to original clips at render time) and if so, how does it affect the preview quality we see? Are we looking at a lower quality "shadow" version?
Neil - Assuming your editing of the MP4 clips prevents you from taking advantage SVRT (no render), the alternative to proxy is to transcode your camera MP4 to a lossless, edit friendly, intermediate codec. All professional NLEs support this and Ron (Optodata) created a front-end for PDR with the M+PD project. Your highly compressed MP4 files are decompressed and every frame is a keyframe for more accurate and better quality edits, effects, color correction etc. GoPro Studio automatically converts MP4 to the Cineform codec (movie industry standard) before edit. It gets worse in 4k and Samsung have just brought out a 4k camera that records in H.265. These highly compressed H.264/265 camera files save space but are tough to edit in the timeline. That's why many pro cameras record uncompressed (huge) files or in MOV/AVI using an intermediate codec like Cineform for pro editing. Maybe M+PD might be worth a try. I can edit 4k on my i5 CPU and no discrete GPU card using M+PD - but it chokes and dies without it. PDR tries to be a complete edit studio in one program. Adobe P-Pro edits but the fancy bits are done separately using After Effects. To avoid quality loss from taking an edited MP4 project into After Effects and outputting to MP4 again, P-Pro outputs the project as a lossless intermediate codec to After Effects where it can be rendered to MP4. It's a post production workflow.
Hope I haven't bored you!!

We really need to get back to the original question. Anybody got a link for a "good deal" for a power laptop that may satisfy the needs of our member Provlina.
Origin EON15-X
Intel Core i7 6700K Quad-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz TurboBoost), EON15-X 3840 x 2160 15.6" QFHD Matte Display, Single 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M, Up to 64GB DDR4, SSD, HDD etc.
Should handle 4k - will blow the budget++ But I wouldn't buy or recommend it. 15" 4k screen is a contradiction of terms.

I use a laptop with an external HDD to preview and store camera footage when I travel but only edit when I get back to my desktop. Any cheap laptop with a decent display works.

Hi Robert,
Intel site gave me a completely different driver and their Driver Update Utility gave me nothing.
I'm surprised Windows Update didn't pick it up.
Anyway problem solved (bleeding edge technology) and, as usual, I have no idea why!!
Best to update via Device Manager.
Sent you an email.
Best Regards,
Al

Thanks Carl. Before I saw your reply I went to Device Manager and tried driver update (I assumed it was up to date) and was amazed to see it download via Win10.
Driver Date 2016-04-22 Version 20.19.15.4444
You are right - working at all resolutions now.
Must be old age!!

Hi Guys,
I have Intel HD Graphics 4600. It has worked great in PDR13/14 until now.
I have an HD project with Hardware Acceleration ON. When I try to produce H.264 MPEG-4 1920X1080 25p (PAL) I can't use Quick Sync but if I select 2k or 4k options QT works. See attached.
Any ideas? (PDR14 with latest updates).
Thanks
Al

Spyder - They need you!
Another user (Karab44) summed it up in a recent post on the Suggestions for PDR15 thread. His suggestion was "Fix all the PD14 bugs and performance issues first".

I'm thinking maybe get the PD14 Suite which includes the colordirector at $149. Darn... PD14 Ultimage (without the colordirector) is on sale for only $80. I would love to save the $70 and buy another stick of RAM...
The thing about my machine is I don't have any discrete graphics card, and since it is a small form factor, there is little chance of me being able to put in anything better than a gt 620 or gt 630, or an r7 240, or gt 720."
My suggestion is to wait for PDR15 in a few months. Thre are still many unresolved issues with PDR14 whic we are hoping will be fixed in PDR15. The 70% off usually indicates a new version is on the way and you may decide to upgrade. I just got Color Director for free by answeing a survey. Haven't tried it yet so I can't comment.
Before you upgrade to a new PC, what do you have now? Do you have integrated graphics? I am editing HD and even 4k with a couple of tweaks without an expensive discrete graphics card - plus Power Director support for discrete GPUs has been problematic as you will see on this forum. Try the free PDR14 download.

Thanks Steve,
Your link says
"Yes, Power2Go 8 supports Blu-ray Disc (BD) burning. You are able to burn data and photo Blu-ray Discs. However, you cannot burn video to Blu-ray Discs"
Hard to believe when it supports video DVD Menu Authoring using Director Zone templates and can obviously write to BluRay DVDs so why not BluRay DVD Menu Authoring? I assumed it would as most freeware can do the rest. $50 for what?
I got P2Go because PDR created bluray ISO files but after creating couldn't burn them with PDR13. I can now burn the discs from ISO without P2Go with Win 10.
I haven't worked out how to use ISO files to burn BR-DVD's in PDR14 - could you please explain.
I've never been happy with DVD or Blu-Ray quality from PDR13 or 14 so I wanted to try create them using other software from HD Mp4 files to compare quality to PDR. I should have read the P2Go fine print!!
Thanks again,
Al

Hi Barry,
You, Neil and Tony, as Senior Contributors, have put a lot of time and effort into PDR over the years helping users. You know and understand PDR better than most so I think both of your "personal perceptions" are valid. I started with PDR12 and if it wasn't for this forum, I would have dumped PDR and moved on - so thanks to you and the other contributors and members.
My "personal perception" (2c) is:
The more "bells and whistles" (additional features) they add to PDR, the more difficult it becomes to squeeze them into a single program interface. Adding complexity makes it harder for users to understand and therefore increases the amount of product support required. Many problems are due to a lack of understanding of an increasingly complex product. New version marketing is based more on "new features" than fixing the current version as per user requests. All of the valuable info contained in the Forum is removed and dumped into a single "previous versions" file not followed by those with the latest version thus putting users at a support disadvantage unless they purchase the latest version every year. I would still be happy with PDR12 if it worked as it should have. I didn't upgrade to PDR13 or 14 for the new features but was hoping 13 would fix 12 and 14 would fix 13.
They are not "new versions" (re-writes) but more like a patchwork quilt that keeps getting bigger.
It has come a long way but we have had to pay for it. It has come a long way because PDR12 didn't do what they advertised and instead of fixing it as per user requests, they sold us 13, then 14 and now 15. Even worse, they are offering massive discounts on PDR14 now without mentioning 15 is around the corner. I think it's wrong because I paid the full price and new users don't know they are buying an "end-of-life" product soon to be dumped into the "other versions" forum and will be forced to upgrade if they want the functionality and support (from the forum and Cyberlink) they thought they bought.
So, Barry, it has come a long way.
Neil, you are also right. The "tech heads" are on a marketing campaign - "If you are not happy - we'll sell you a new version every year". If that works for them, why would they change?
Tony - it may be a bit negative but only Cyberlink can change that. Why don't they give us a full list of the fixes and improvements in new versions before we buy like other software does?
PDR maybe cheaper than many other NLEs but add up what you are paying every year and it's not such a bargain.
|
|
Tony and Neil
Agreed - Pity we have to keep buying annual upgrades hoping it improves. Don't know of any other software that expects their customers to do that. It's a reasonably priced NLE but I've had to buy three versions in three years and I'm now hoping they get it right the fourth time??????
How many of the PDR14 suggestions were added? - even assuming Tony is right and 50% are valid requests

Hi - When I try to Create a Video Disc it shows it only shows CD or DVD - no BluRay DVD option. But if I choose "Photo Gallery Disc" it shows CD, DVD, and BluRay options.
How do I create a BluRay Video DVD with P2G 10?
Thanks,
Al

Hi Grumpy - I'm also thinking of a PC upgrade for 4K.
I see you have a Xeon675 plus a GTX960.
I like Paul's Wildebeest but want to get a cost effective solution without spending excessively on hardware which might only yield a small performance improvement.
What would you suggest from Intel's latest i7 range with 4,6, & 8 core cpus? Intel's latest HD (4K) integrated graphics is getting good press and of course has QuickSync. Has anybody tested it with PDR14 vs GTX gpus?
Do you think latest i7 K series 4 core cpu running at 4ghz would perform as well as your Xeon 6 core running at 3 ghz?
PDR14 does not seem to grab all available memory. How much would you suggest?
Thanks Al

Go to Control Panel > System and it will display your PC's info. Or right-click on "My Computer" (or "This PC" in Win 10) and click on Properties at the bottom. Add info to your profile too.

"A crash message states:
"media file in your library may not comply with file format standard on system. May lack required decoding components."
Error type: audio cut"
I'm confused. Your system should work fine with just the Intel HD Graphics. Mine works fine for HD and and other users edit 4k. Latest Intel HD Graphics has full 4k and H.265 support. So you shouldn't have a crash with the 5500 GPU.
Regarding the G-Force card I'm still not sure how much faster it may be or if you must choose one or the other. I seem to recall that if you edit with two screens, both GPUs can be active.
Professional NLE software like Edius claims a 500% improvement in render times since they added QuickSync support a year ago. QuickSync is part of Intel HD Graphics GPUs. PDR also has QuickSync support for render.
If you find an easy way to switch between the two cards it would be interesting if you could compare the two and share results with us.
In the meantime, I suggest you contact support and get it working with your Intel graphics first.

"You really do need to "lighten up"! I was trying to inject a little humour into an otherwise dull subject. It seems to me this forum is often very "dry", devoid of any humour."

Go for it Neil!!!!

Because Apple no longer supports QuickTime for Windows, users are being encouraged to uninstall the program immediately. The warning from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) comes on the heels of a warning from antivirus vendor Trend Micro that the video playback software is vulnerable to a pair of zero-day exploits.

Time for a Cyberlink alternative to the old Quicktime?

Thanks Tony
Great tips.
What size were your Olympus @ Pana pics?
Did you re-size the pics before each test?
Unfortunately DVD has not died for many of us. If I have a HD timeline with Pics and HD clips and I use Magic Motion on my pics to pan & zoom as a slide show, would it help to render the slide shows to HD first and then bring them back in the timeline, as clips, to combine with HD vid clips?
If so which HD format is best?
I want to use the HD project to produce BluRay and normal DVDs?
Thanks,
Al
