I am making a video in stages and will finally link up all the produced sections.
Question:
Is it OK to edit eg Cut/insert, additional information into an already produced AVCDH video and reproduce again without compromising quality? Or should I modify the original Timeline and produce this to maintain quality?
Thanks Ron

Some time ago, I mentioned in another thread that when playing Produced videos on my pc they where not very sharp, though OK when played as a dvd on my tv.
I have found out where my mistake was:
I Produced video files only for burning to DVD (not Blueray) eg MPEG2. When I Produce at AVC H.264 Full HD at an appropriate bitrate I get a very clear picture viewing through the pc media player and I can then use this produced video for for burning a DVD in the MPEG2 DVD HQ format.
Took me a while to work this out ... even though I was told Put it down to age
Thanks all.

I promised to post the reply from Cyberlink ref 'date filing'.
Below is their answer:
Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.
I understand that you have query related to feature of modifying dates of the pictures, which do not have the Exif information, using the PhotoDirector 4 program.
You can use the MetaData tab of the Library in PhotoDirector 4, to modify the fields of the Pictures.
You can view more about them, at below given link:
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/photodirector/features_en_US.html
They referred to PhD4 (I asked about 3) but I guess its the same 'filing'. As far as I can tell you cannot import in date order other than 'Capture Date' so I will not use PhD3 for my prime library. Love some of the features though and will definately use this software.

Thanks Pix for taking time out to try to solve my problem ... a very comprehensive overview. However you must have been a salesman in your past life for you could have said (in answer to my date order query) that the answer is 'No' however these are some of the options
Please do not take offence to this, I do sincerely appreciate your guidance.
For the past 15+ years I have always filed my pics in a year/date sequence ... scanned prints of course in the early day's. Pics have been taken using many different camera's/mobiles/smart phones/ camcorders etc. For each year I have a master folder in my picture library within which all pics taken that year are in date sequence ... capture date where possible. I can't change this process ... many many 000's involved. But whatever picture software I used (or use) seems to easily cope with this filing system ... to me this is fundamental but I could well be wrong. There are most likely lots of photo software's out there that don't file by date.
Apart from date order filing, I have tags for some of the more important pictures (maybe 10% of the total) so can quickly access them this way. Note that most of my pics are 'domestic' (not competition entries/Facebook whatever) and are used by my better skilled half to create album/story books. When we have a number of pictures to print (at a printers) I have a system that enables me to easily find (in date order) which was the last pic printed. I copy the forward balance onto a memory stick/other pass it to the boss and she decides which ones she wants printed etc. It is a hobby ... believe me we have a room full of albums
It is very efficient ... for us at least, though what I do may not be the norm. But a basic Date Order file seems so fundamental as a starting point for any photo library system
I have just raised my query with Cyberlink and will publish their response here.
Thank you again Pix ... you are a very busy online contribute and I am sure all of us appreciate the effort.

... There are no cut, copy & paste commands in PhotoDirector.
It's important to understand that PhotoDirector doesn't physically import anything. What it does is record the file path to the real photo. That information is stored in the project file and allows PhotoDirector to locate your files.
PIX
Hei Pix ... I thought that I would copy/edit my 'Filing concerns' mentioned http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/26840.page to this thread, it being more specific to my problem.
You mentioned ... What it does is record the file path to the real photo ... however, every picture on my pc in the master library is in a correct date order except those that I have recorded into PhD3 which do not have the Capture EXIF data. Is this simply an issue with this free PhD3 version because I am considering upgrading to PhD4 BUT filing for me is very important. I know you can Tag and have other ways of 'finding' pics but my entire library is date based ... in Capture Date or Import Date if former is not available. I can't spend the time importing 100's of files individually, firstly adding a Capture Date to the file properties before importing to PhD3. If this simple filing is not possible then I will continue to use other software and only import specific pictures to PhD3 to use some of the excellent Edit/Adjustment tools.
Below is what I had said within the other thread headed: Free PhotoDirector - 48 hours
Thanks Pix ... must be something local.
Funny thing is that for many years I have imported my pics from cameras and ext discs into other photo programme in ones and 1000's and never had a crash during the import process. I will have a fresh study of my set ups for importing but I also see from searching PhD that these issues have been raised in the past.
I am also having problems when importing eg smart phone pics where there may be limited EXIF (or none) sent to me. If there is no 'Date Taken' the import ends up in an incorrect location ... I would have thought that it should then have filed itself in the 'Date Imported' ... either into the main picture file or when imported into PhD3.
On further checking it seems that if any imported picture does not have Date Taken/Capture Date then it is filed with any others not having this EXIF info. Is there any way to automatically overcome this eg file pic in imported date? Its not a problem if simply importing one picture but (as in my case) when trying to import your Picture Library which has many pics without Capture Date it becomes a serious hassle. It seems that once an import is completed, you cannot subseqently add data within the programme to move the picture to its correct location ... this means that you have to delete such pictures and then reimport, making sure that the date info is inserted manually. I hope that I am doing something wrong?

Fantastic method of properly trialling a program. Except I just installed it on Windows 7 and it's crashed on all 3 occasions I tried to import some photos
I had the same problem with use on Windows 7. So I will import pics off my existing files s l o w l y ... not try all at once. Is pic importing a known problem?

I'd second that Tom ... so easy to use compared with other 'editors'.

Smart move by Cyberlink ... really doesn't cost them to freebee version 3 and they will pull a lot more users on board, some of whom will upgrade to version 4. I'm a user of Photoshop Elements but, from what little practice I have now had with PhD3, I think I will be using it for many of the adjustments. I think it will be a much easier work flow than Elements.
I have had a run through with this special version and like you, Pix, can't find anything that does not function from the available tools.
That's one more Cyberlink product to add to my growing list

SOLVED: SELECTED 'KEEP IN CURRENT LOCATION'
I have just installed this software from the free issue to try it out.
When I import pictures into the programme from my hard disc, new folders are created in my Windows7/Libraries/Pictures which are in effect copies of the pictures that already exist in my Library. How can I avoid creating extra folder/picture copies in my Pictures master files each time I import an existing picture to PD3. If this is not possible can I import these pictures but have the PD3 create folders/pictures stored elsewhere rather than in my primary Libraries/Pictures folders.
I am reading the User Guide but haven't worked this out so far ...

Thanks for tip off. I have just downloaded it and will install it later on. Seems it is a 'special edition' release of PhotoDirector 3 which probably means its not the full version. But still ... its free
For Picture Editing I have always used Photoshop Elements so it will be interesting to 'trial' the Cyberlink alternative ... sort of 'keep it in the family'.

I am probably being a 'naughty boy' asking in this thread but here goes
I am learning to use a Sony camcorder (new novice) and to transfer the videos to my pc I take out the camera SD card, plug it into the pc and select Open Folder to View Files/Private/AVCHD/BDMV/Stream and then copy the actual video files I want to the pc.
Do I need all the other 'rubbish' from AVCDH for anything? The camera has the integrated USB cable but this involves also the Sony Play Memories software (I think) ... I have no wish to have yet another photo/video programme trying to grap all my pics/videos etc.
Am I missing something important

I find that Windows 7 also has a mind of its own! Its never a problem using just one file series eg pics from 1 camera, but as soon as multiple cameras are involved ...
I find its OK sorting to picture taken date in the main Picture Library but as soon as I select them in other programme/s the sequence is often changed eg pics get grouped by camera file data etc. Though I don't seem to have your problem of 'download date' since I can use the correct 'taken' dates. Is your EXIF data OK for all your imports to your pc?
I gave up trying and now for PD11 (or other) I copy the pics I want to use into a special project file, sort as I want and then rename to maintain this sorted order. I would also add (per the advice of our experts) that its smart to work on copies rather than the originals in your picture file. If something goes amiss you are not then affecting your most important pic file.

... It seems the only option is to rename files into chronological order before importing them ...
Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for but when I import pictures I am usually importing pictures ( taken with 2-3 different cameras) from my Picture file . I have found the best way (for me at least) is to copy what I need into a project file for the PD11 project, use the file facility to sort all of them into a date taken order and then rename in a numerical series by selecting all etc ... you obviously know how this works. Then they retain this file(date) order when imported into PD11.
Using this method, I am not altering/renaming my primary picture file/s.

I don't know about quality, but SVRT definitely reduces time. If you make any changes to your video though, brightening, contrast, speed,etc....then SVRT isn't available,

No worries Neil.
Perhaps I should add to my post above ...
Before taking this 'heavy duty' action, please check with your supplier
Though it is a well known problem-solver a cautious approach is always best. For example, whenever I install large updates to programmes or install new software, I always create a Restore Point so that I can backtrack if necessary.
