Need some advise please about an editing programme called Lightworks and whether this programme will interfere with PD11. I have just downloaded the latest release 11.1 which includes a 28 day Pro feature trial ... lots of codecs etc additional to the 'free' basic version. It is unlikely that I will continue with the trial Pro version so my installed programme will downgrade itself to the basic version, deleting many of the codecs etc. I may choose to keep this on my pc but will the downgrade effect any of my PD11 codecs etc? I am assuming that codecs are 'common' across various programmes but maybe they are each specific to its own associated programme?

I don't want to mess up PD11 through ignorance

I guess (Dafydd) you will see this as a competitor and maybe 'chop my topic off' but I hope I can get an answer first
Thanks Carl
Am I missing something? It seems that the PD 10, WMV small file sizes that were useful for emailing videos for viewing on eg pc's are no longer available in PD 11. At least I can't find them
Thanks for inputs. I guess that my problem was just 'one of those things' but I mentioned it just in case it has been observed before by others. I have auto save set to 2 minutes but this can still be a loss of many tasks if programme crashes ... I try to remember to manually save immediately if I have a complex edit.
Regards the latest update, I am holding off until I have completed my current project.
Ron
Hei Rob ... you got it in one!
Foolishly I did not capture the problem so I can't repeat it. If it occurs again then I will at least try to get a screen shot. Since there have been no other comments it is obviously not an issue with PD11 that needs Cyberlink to investigate. I'll put it down to 'one of those things'...

I was importing a short MP3 sound clip and PD11 froze and could not be rescued. I should have changed the clip to a WAV file which later worked just fine. I was forced to use Windows Task Manager to close the programme.

On reconnecting to PD11 I was offered the 'saved' file which reopened the project. However, whilst the Timeline was correct in all respects, each of the transitions had minor frame issues eg it was the correct transition but repeated a frame from the preceding media as it opened to the next media. Difficult to explain, sorry It was not associated with one specific transition but with all that I had used, each of which had to be removed from the timeline and then reinstalled to correct the error ... was a big task!

Is this something 'we' know about and for which there is a solution?

For those new to PD11 I will add that the programme crash in my opinion was due to the fact that I forgot to reboot my pc prior to using a video editing, resource hungry, programme ... so my fault.
Ron
Thanks Xerox

I must be a bit thick this morning but I can't determine the difference between New Workspace and New Project ... operationally they seem the same? What am I missing please?

Hi Ron,
I was aware of that short coming when I wrote up the piece ...

On reflection Dafydd I would say that it is best to separately produce a portion of a project externally ... for me it reduces the possibility of major damage control
Ref my post above. I tested producing a short section from the timeline. The only way I could see to do this was to create a track above track 1, move or copy what I wanted to produce to this track, deselect the below track/s and produce. The result was that it produced all the tracks but those deselected produced as 'black' with no information.
Maybe the best (only?) way is to copy the required section, paste into a new project, produce and then (as needed) import it back into the working project. Other ideas anyone
Hei Dafydd,

I'm not hogging this thread but found your following comment most interesting ...

Question 5. How do I render to video just a section of my production? ...
Your answer: Deselect tracks may help. Isolate portions of a project, duplicating them to a single production track. Render the isolated single track might be a solution.

To date I have been copying and pasting for production a portion of a working project into a new project and then importing it back into the working project. Your method seems much simpler ... thanks for the tip. I had tried highlighting a section but this did not work ... it produced the 'whole'.
Ron
Great thread guys, thanks.
Thanks a lot for help gentlemen.
I set the production at United States NTCS and the profile came up at 720x480 60i (8Mbps). After producing I burnt DVD without problem The DVD plays on my pc (seems that WMP plays both PAL & NTCS) and looks exactly like the PAL version so I guess that your widescreen is almost identical to 16:9 format.

Great stuff this PD ... even though I cursed it a few days ago when it decided to crash. Upon my restart I stupidly ignored the 'we have found temp files etc' and loaded the 'real' project LESS all I had done since the last save. Once opened, I couldn't work out how to backtrack and open the 'temp file' Is there a way maybe

I always use a USB mike ... works just fine with Vista or Windows 7. No volume or quality problems.
Ron
I have produced a 16:9 video AVC 1920x1080 50i (16Mb) and burnt a PAL DVD from it.

Now I need to make a DVD of this content for viewing in America. Should I produce in NTSC (and if so what are the appropiate settings) and is 16:9 widescreen OK? If not 16:9, can one easily change to 4:3?
Would appreciate advice. Thanks
Ron
I find that I often use this great feature in PD11 on jpg's to adjust the lighting ... is the default setting 38 or is this something I may have 'tweaked' during my early practice?

In other good picture editing programmes, sharpening adjustments are made to lossy jpg's at various stages ... in PD is it normal practice to Apply Refocus after adjustment and is there a level that would be regarded as 'default' ... assuming the original unedited jpg was in focus?
Ron
Thanks for your guidances about the use of HA.
Since I have been producing without HA and all is OK its probably best to continue this way. I might test my next produce with and without to see what effect I get ... if any.
Ron
PowerDirector can take advantage of AMD, Intel, and Nvidia hardware acceleration to speed up editing response and encoding.

I do not currently have these ticked in Preferences and it seems that many of our users also do not use these features.
Are there real advantages using hardware acceleration for editing or producing?
Is a 4 core processor loading more equally spread across the cores, hence each core being less stressed?

I confess to not understanding the use of HA (other than it is supposed to speed up activity) and what effect it has on processor stress.
Guidance sought please from those that understand.
Ron
Nice one Nina, thanks. Lots of fading ideas for me to explore.
And your rich Norwegian voice speaking English ... wonderful.
That was an easy question to answer Dafydd ... just read Nina's post

Being an infant regards video production I was unsure if, when modifying video with all the various possibilities, you could end up loosing quality ... much like the lossy aspects of jpg.

My conclusion (thanks also to Nina) is 'no problem' ... I could have spent time trialling/testing various possibilities but why not ask our experts or do further searches on the net. Raising these kind of questions also 'airs' issues that may be of help to other newbees.
Lazy ... you bet
I am making a video in stages and will finally link up all the produced sections.
Question:
Is it OK to edit eg Cut/insert, additional information into an already produced AVCDH video and reproduce again without compromising quality? Or should I modify the original Timeline and produce this to maintain quality?
Thanks Ron
