I had some problems with PD6 and importing analog VHS tapes, too. I had to do a "workaround" by importing it from my VHS player through a Pinnacle Movie Box, saving it as an .avi file and then importing it into PD6. I have since ugraded to PD7 and just tested all my "importing" devices - digital camera, DVD drive and VHS player. I am still using the VHS/Movie Box to get the analog file onto my hard drive, but happily PD7 at least recognizes it now, so I don't have to do that extra step in Pinnacle. I can't remember the details of what PD6 did, but I did figure out that for me in order to import analog VHS tapes, you have to select MPEG-1 in the profile section to get both sound and video. I initially selected MPEG-2 (didn't work), then selected AVI (video was fine, but sound was delayed). Any reason you need to import your file in AVI format instead of MPEG-1?
Hope that helps!

I just finished a project in which I was given several DVDs to extract video and did it with success. Although I don't have a mini-DVD disc, it seems like all discs would work in the same way. Put the disk in the drive, go to the Capture portion in PD, wait for PD to detect the available devices, and click on the disc at the top of your screen that says capture from DVD (last disc in the row of devices to capture from). Then on the bottom left, click on the clips you want to import and press the record button.
Hope that works for you.

Hi Dafydd,
I do have the latest version, so if you have that special patch, please send it - I'm desperate! I know it's probably really late over there, but if you get this post, I'd like to try that patch. My daughters (and their soccer team) would be eternally grateful!
I am glad, at least, that it is a known issue with a possible solution and not just something that popped up. However, there were no chapters in this video slideshow, only subtitles in some of the videos - would there be a conflict with the subtitles? I'm even creating this just "plain jane" - no menus or anything.

Thanks for the info - I sent you a PM regarding bonus content.
Just a follow-up on the morphing clips. I did change the settings to 720X480 (DVD NTSC) as recommended by the morphing software. That was the key . . . However, when you preview it in PD, it will still show a very jerky morph, but after burning and viewing on a TV, it looks fine.
NOW I HAVE ANOTHER HUGE PROBLEM. I burned a 'test' copy of this video/slide show to a DVD RW disk and it burned fine and played on a TV fine. We went back to PD and did a little editing by adding a couple of still pics and a little music (nothing very complicated or different than I have used in previous projects) and tried to burn the final copy today (and it's due today!) and I'm getting the "burning failed - error a0000005". I've tried burning to DVD RW and R disks and I still get the same message! Turned off virus protection and anything else running in the background. I have done nothing at all different to the computer since I burned a successful copy the night before (other than the tiny editing I mentioned above!) HELP!

Hi Dafydd,
Thanks for the information. There is a problem with the 4 morphs that I put in. I tested each one - 2 let me burn the dvd and 2 didn't. However, when I tried to view the successfully burned dvd, the morphing was all distorted. In the morphing software, there is a setting that they recommend to use 720X480 (DVD NTSC) when exporting to editing software that I'm going to try. When I imported the original morphs, PD warned me that I was using the PAL setting, but said it would convert it for me - maybe it didn't. Oh well, I'm going to try. I'll post my results. And I did export the .avi uncompressed. If this doesn't work, I will try burning as a DVD HQmpeg2 or DVavi file.
One more thing, I read your very thorough uninstall and reinstall (and printed it in case I need it in the future). But in your above post, when you mentioned install PD + update + bonus . . . . am I missing some bonuses that I should have? When I install PD, the bonuses are in the orginal install aren't they? The only bonuses that are available on Cyberlink's web site are for version 5.0, right? Please let me know if I'm missing something, because I would sure like some new content!

I have PD 6.0 with the latest patch (2319).
I am trying to produce a 14 minute video that includes about 8 minutes of .avi video, 4 short morphing video clips in .avi format and a 2-minute clip from Cyberlink's webcam saved in .wmv format. When I get to the create disk section and click "burn video" after a short time PD freezes and I get the error that includes "clvideostabilizer.ax". I've tried taking out the Webcam part and the morphing parts thinking there is some kind of conflict with those clips and I still get the error. I think at some point during my editing I may have tried to use the stabilizing feature of PD in one of the clips to try to reduce some wind noise but when it didn't help, I didn't save it.
Any ideas? I'm kinda under the gun to get this done for a school function and I'm at a loss of what to do. PD has worked perfectly in the past and this has just baffled me.

I'm kind of stumped on this one and need someone to help me explain what this is. I recorded my daughter's soccer game on a Panasonic DVD recorder (using a DVD-RAM disc) from a local TV station that films occasional local games. I didn't do any "finalizing" on it because I didn't think I had to. Put it in my computer and it plays fine on my DVD player.
I want to pull it into PD 6 and do a little editing and re-burn it onto a DVD-R. I have copied the file over to my hard drive - it is named VR_MOVIE.VRO and is 3.4GB in size (about 2 hours in length)
I don't know what kind of file a .vro is, but PD6 seems able to read it up to a certain point and then I get the message from Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library that says, "This application requested runtime to terminate in an unusual way" and PD closes. I've tried this several times and each time it does the same thing.
Am I not preparing the file to bring into PD? Is the file too large? If it is, I don't know how to split it up. Do I need to update something with this runtime library?
HELP!

I have a HP Media Center PC with Windows XP. 1.5 GB RAM and 270 GB Hard drive with an additional removable hard drive. I know it pales in comparision with some of you pros out there, but it works well with what I need it to do. The video really takes up lots of hard drive space and I have lots of music files on my hard drive to use with the slide & video projects. I also only use this computer to do video & slide show editing and not for everyday use. I have read on this forum and heard lots of horror stories with compatibility with Vista so I'm in no hurry to upgrade yet. Hope that helps.

I have previously used Pinnacle and Ulead's products to create year end slideshows and videos for my kids' high school sports. Those products are not anywhere close to PD 6 as far as ease of use, eye-catching transitions, menus, etc. I have mainly done slideshows with some embedded video for soccer, cross country and golf using PD 6. As long as you have lots of memory and a lots of GB hard drive space, then you shouldn't run into the frustrations that I had with the other products of the program crashing after you have been working on it for hours! Good luck!

Hi Dafydd,
Thank you for the information about the patch being recalled. That saves me a lot of headache! I do have a working copy with patch 1731b installed and it is working fine, so I will just leave things alone and finish my projects with this version.
I did get a 4th message with a download link with a new u/n and p/w. Would you suggest that I TRY to download that full version that includes the latest patch in case I would need to reinstall it again rather than my original 6.0 and the subsequent patches that have come out? I don't know that I can even download it again, but I'll try.
However, you did give an idea. I have been trying to download the file through my AOL account. Maybe something on AOL is blocking it and I just need to download it using Internet Explorer.
I do have one more unrelated question. Is Cyberlink ever going to come out with more effects, transitions or menus? I have made quite a few projects using all of their wonderful effects, but I need some new stuff!
Thanks,
Cindy

The patch did all the uninstalling . . . I just followed the directions as it came up, but as the program was installing, those .dll files would not intall. I rebooted, but couldn't even open the program because it was not completely installed. I was able to go back and reinstall the original PD 6.0 through patch 1731b. I am now back to square one.
I contacted tech support with this same problem that I posted here. For 3 separate times they keep responding by telling me to uninstall PD and gave me a site to re-download the entire program. HOWEVER, for 3 times it would not allow me to download the program from the server because it said I had an invalid u/n & p/w (which I know I typed in correctely). When I try to download a 2nd time, the server just totally locks me out.
I'm about ready to just leave well enough alone and wait until there is a patch I really need since everything works fine now.
Any ideas?

Has anyone had problems installing the latest patch? At the end of my install it gave me the message Error 1907.module C:\program files\cyberlink\powerdirector\PDVidAnd.dll failed to register HResult - 2147220473
Then the next window did the same thing except if failed to register file PDEditingMgrWrapper.dll
When I restarted the computer and the install continued until it told me that this patch only works with the retail version and not the trial version. I have never even installed the trial version on this computer! I uninstalled and re-installed and it did the same thing a 2nd time.
This is VERY FRUSTRATING considering how perfect the program was running previously.
Any ideas (I've posted this question to the support email, too)

I asked about the expected bonus packs also through the submit inquiry, but they keep me hanging on - end of April, end of May, end of June . . .
I think the link you sent was for the bonus packs for PD5 which I understand cannot be used in PD6. Or can they be used?
I'm with you, I want some new stuff - or at least make the PD5 bonus packs usable with PD6!

I'm glad I read your post because the EXACT thing happened to me!
I imported a series of 7-8 video files - all but one was an .avi file. The only different one was a .wmv file. When I got ready to burn to a disc, it gave me a "burning failed - error 0". I took out the .wmv file and it burned perfectly.
I worked around it by re-saving that file as an .avi file and slid it back in the project. It burned perfectly!
Must be a bug . . . .

I guess I thought I was relatively smart capturing and importing, but I have run into a wall and now I realize I still have a lot to learn. I am working on a slide/video presentation that includes pictures, music and short videos. No problems with pictures or music or even capturing analog video thru my VHS player (using another software).
BUT, is it possible to import files that were created and rendered for TV and burned to a disc using other software into PD 6? I have several discs that have a folder VIDEO_TS and within it a series of files. They play on a DVD player, but I need to know how to import them and incorporate them into my master presentation.
Is this possible? If so, how do I import/open them in PD 6?

Does anyone know who I email regarding adding the feature of tagging pictures so that maybe they could include it in an update?

The slideshow feature in version 6 is pretty cool and easy to use. I do have a question if someone can answer it -
I have used Pinnacle Studio to create slideshows. In that program I can import - say 50 pictures - into the media area ready to put on the timeline. I don't want to put those pics on the timeline in the same order they appear in the media area. In Pinnacle, as I randomly drag pictures onto the timeline, a check mark appears next to the pictures I have used that shows they have been placed on the timeline. Very convenient and helpful!
Is there something similiar in PD that I'm just not seeing? It gets very confusing when you have a large group of pictures and can't tell if you've used them already!
Any ideas?

I, too, have that same problem with PD 5 not opening. Dafydd was very helpful in a post a couple of weeks ago but we still couldn't figure it out. I emailed support back and forth a few times with my symptoms and came to the conclusion that I had another program that conflicted with PD 5 - and I've decided that it is Pinnacle Studio.
I just couldn't stomach reformatting my hard drive and starting over again. I didn't want to uninstall Studio because I'm still using it and it is working fine. Sooooo . . . . this is how I'm working around the problem.
I have Studio with all my video, audio, stills, etc. installed on my desktop. I also have a laptop that is networked to the desktop. I installed PD 5 on the laptop and "pull" all my content from the desktop. So far, everything is working fine!
I just hope that Cyberlink can find a solution so that their video editing program doesn't conflict with other programs. Even with PD 5 installed, Studio still works fine, so it's got to be a problem with PD 5.
Cindy
PS - Just an FYI . . . I purchased PD 5 within the 30 days of PD 6 being released. I emailed support and they responded that I would be eligible for a free upgrade. However, it's been over a week since they told me they would send me the link, so I hope they will make good on their promise. I am hoping that this new version will not have the program conflicts that PD 5 has - I'm crossing my fingers!

OH - I THOUGHT I HAD IT FIGURED OUT!!!! But maybe you could help me on this one. I have another desktop computer that I do more business-related work on. On a whim, I installed PD and it installed very nicely. As it was installing I noticed that it installed Quicktime 7.1 (which I thought I already had on there).
So I thought . . . what if I uninstall Quicktime on my media computer? And voila!!! Power Director came up perfectly! The only problem was I couldn't add any smartsound music. So I uninstalled PD and reinstalled using the quicktime within the installer. Everything opened and smartsound came up and even went out and found the rest of my music (I have sonicfire pro 4).
So then I restarted my computer, but PD would not load again. Uninstalled Quicktime - PD opened with no music - Installed Quicktime - nothing! I need to have quicktime on the computer because sonicfire pro 4 won't work without it. But maybe there is my problem.
Do you know if there is some kind of setting that I can apply to quicktime so everything can work as it is supposed to?

Thanks for telling me how to find the latest build and yes, it is version 2505a.
I already tried opening it from that location thinking the same thing you did and still no luck.
I've gotten 2 responses back from TS. They just keep telling me to disable and/or uninstall spyware, virus protection which I already have done. The latest response had me set an exception in the windows firewall.
I'm waiting on a response hinting to them about .dll conflicts and/or missing files. I'll let you know what they say, but it may be another day before I hear from them. I don't know where TS responds from but I assume is is somewhere in Asia. And you are ahead of me if you are in the UK - I'm on Central Time in the US.
I just don't think I could stomach wiping out my hard drive and starting over again for this one program with all the photos and video that are presently on it! Since Pinnacle works fine on it, I guess I'll just have to keep using that one until I can get a solution. I do have my computers networked, so I guess I could pull things off the desktop and edit and burn on the laptop - but the screen on the laptop is just not the same!
Please keep me informed if you think of anything else.
Thanks,
Cindy

I uninstalled the trial version of PD sometime after the trial expired. I, too, am wondering if there is conflict with another program. In the video world, I have pinnacle studio and ulead video that are not on my laptop but are on the desktop. However, like you said, since PD is the last new install, it seems like it should update/replace any shared .dll files.
I guess I just don't understand when you purchase a program, why it doesn't come with all the files you need to run the program and why you have to depend on other shared .dll files. I purchased a copy of the program on cd - could it have any extra files that aren't in the downloaded version and maybe be my solution?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times - I even downloaded the latest patch dated 2/9/07 because I don't have anything to lose! Still nothing . . .
I did read in one of the FAQ or other info on their website, that Cyberlink hasn't tested their software with all other software (I don't know how they could) and their could be conflicts.
I'm still waiting to hear from their help desk, but please keep me in mind if something pops into your head!
PS - IF I can eventually get the program to work on my desktop, do you suggest updating all the patches as they are available?
