Well here I am again.
Last night I had some time to find things out and I can say that I've got a very nice result when making a simple, short test movie.
This is how I did it:
1 - As I'm using Lightroom for editing my pictures, I found out that you can do the same for your video files. Here's an explanation for the ones that are using Lightroom too (as you're not using it, it's kind of hard to understand): http://tv.adobe.com/watch/getting-started-with-adobe-photoshop-lightroom-4/working-with-dslr-video-/
With that I could easily create a nice toning and copy it to all of my clips.
2 - After that I exported them to new files and imported the 'toned' movie clips into PD11.
3 - To create the 2,35:1 aspect ratio I looked for a template at Google. Sorry 1Nina, I didn't use your template because I was looking for an exact 2,35:1 template with the size of 1920x1080. Yours is slightly different (smaller black bars). Well, here it is in a .png with transparent middle part: http://gabrielmays.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Anamorphic_Croppings1.png
I inserted it on a new track and stretched it from beginning to the end of the movie.
4 - For a finishing touch I wanted to create a black, soft vignette. I inserted the 'focus' effect on the first clip, set it to the right amount and depth and selected to put the effect on all of the clips.
Now, that's it
The biggest advantage of pre-toning the clips in for example Lightroom is that PD11 is eating the clips much easier, resulting in faster editing and no locks or crashes.
When the movie is ready, I'll post the link in here to show you the results.

First of all, thanks for all the helpfull tips and hints. Very much appreciated!

Hi,
there is actually a lot you can do in “fix / enhance” with color adjustment.
I don’t have ColorDirector, so I can’t advise regarding that.
But, tuning hue / saturation / exposure – and perhaps downscaling vibrancy,
I would think you could find “a toning” you could be satisfied with.
This is actually a good method. I managed to get a nice color style with moving some of the sliders.
But how do I do this to all of my clips..easily? I don't feel like picking every clip and move the sliders every time again.
HDedit: I'll try the NewBlueFX effect to see if it works for me.
Another thing what gives a really nice cinema effect is adding black bars to the top and bottom of the movie. I take a mask and cover 1/8th of the upper and lower side of the movie. Again..it's not really easy to do this to all of the clips separately
The last thing I do is adding an ellipse gradient with the focus effect to create black, soft rounded corners.

Hello all,
I'm about to shoot and make a movie with friends. It's a movie for a friend who is going to marry in a month. The movie will be full of moments of his life, played by my friends.
Now I want to make it to look as professional as possible, well.. at least I'll try
Now what I see in most of the latest cinema movies is that they have a certain 'toning'. It looks very different from the shots you take directly out of your camera. If you don't know what I mean, take a look at some trailers on Youtube and maybe you'll see it.
Does anybody know how to get such toning in PD11? Which preset, sliders etc.?
Thanks in advance.
NB: I'll shoot with my Nikon D5100 DSLR.

Hi Pax,
In this case I build the video around the music. But sometimes this insn't the best way, it depends on the kind of movie and what you want. Try to figure it out by yourself.
About the postings at this forum. I think your settings are not right. I get always an email if anyone posted in a topic in which I posted too. So you always know if there is a reply.
You can find it by going to "my profile" and setting "Send e-mail notification when posts get answered" to YES.
Good luck!

Hello Pax,
First of all, I am so glad to hear all of your compliments! I am truly honored!
Of course I would like to share my thoughts and ideas on how to make such a movie. That's what this forum is for, isn't it
I filmed all of this in 2008, and I promised my friends to make this into a nice movie. Untill then, I never touched any program to edit video. There was a demo delivered with the camera (a JVC Everio) and it was of Cyberlink, I think it was version 6.0. So I started editing as a newbie and as I was editing, I learned myself some new things and techniques. After a year or so, the movie was about 50 minutes long and ready. But I made also a ‘summary’ of approx. 5min. Just for Youtube and for my friends to watch whenever they wanted.
So when I saw this contest, I thought: let’s edit this movie again. In the last years I’ve edited some more, so I became better than when I first edited this video. I deleted some parts and added some, and the most important: I added the intro especially for this contest. Just because it was an international contest and not everybody knows what this Orange Campsite is all about. That is also why I added little parts of text when a important activity in the movie started, like “putting up the tent” etc. For ME it is clear what is going to happen, but is it for the viewer too? That’s what I tought from beginning to end, and I think it’s important that you always think from the perspective of the viewer.
Then about the techniques: personally I like to use as simple as possible effects and transitions. Most of the time, I use fade or blur. That’s what I see the most on tv too. And often at the TV they don’t use a transition at all! Try to watch some documentaries and movies and look at the transitions to learn from it!
I also know that when a shot is too long, the attention of the viewer flows away. Especially when you use uptempo music. Try to go with the flow of your music and use snippets of a few seconds max (4-8 sec). The music I chose was used by our national TV station during that European Championship in 2008. So it was all about memories for me and my friends that I chose this video. Look at this for example, this is what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To-8fROINkQ
What is important too for me, is that the music fits perfectly with the video. So most of the time I firstly choose the music, and then build the video around this. When you look at my movie, you will see this for example at 3:30 in my video when all of the guys move togheter exactly at the tempo of the music. And you see it again 3:55 when the cup moves in harmony with the music.
The last important thing I used, and what makes it look more professional, was the stabilizer of PD9. Look at the shot in the underground station at 3:40, which I shot completely out of my hand. It was very, very shakey. But with the stabilizer you don’t see that and it looks directly more professional.
If you have any more questions, please ask. This movie is definitely a mix of practice, practice, practice, a little bit of feeling and a little bit of info for everybody who wasn’t there, but wants to understand what is happening.
I hope I gave you some information that you can use. As long as you don’t win the next contest, hehe!
Greetings and a lot of thanks for your compliments, again.
Henrik

Congrats Barry, nice movie of your hands!
I was completely surprised by winning the contest, but the price was so welcome, my girlfriend and I were saving money for this camera for a while.
Now stay tuned on when Cyberlink will contact us. Please give a shout when you've got mail

Thanks for all your comments, very much appreciated.
I was looking for something like ynotfish posted!
Sometimes its so simple

Nice captures Nina, so many flowers! Incredible.
Have you filmed al this movies by yourself?

Hello all,
Does anybody has a good tip on how to crop a video to a part of the video in an other ratio?
Let me explain: when you have a clip of 16:9, you can only crop to a part of the video in the 16:9 ratio.
But I only want to use for example the lower part (about 1/3th of the video) or only the right half of the video.
PowerDirector requires me to crop in 16:9 ratio. Is there any option to crop in another ratio?
Or an other way to achieve this?

I'm talking about titles. But what I said: it's not MY style. Everybody is free to do what he/she likes. But I was just wondering why someone uses that big fonts, so no personal attack or something!
Actually, I think that BarrytheCrab gives the correct answer: it depends on the purpose of the movie. When you want to give a presentation on a screen for example at a wedding, you can use bigger fonts. When you just want to show it on your TV or on Youtube/Vimeo, it's better to use some smaller fonts.
|
|
Nice to see this thread going on more and more.
One thing I see in every movie, and of which I wonder why:
why do you use those extremely big fonts? Most of the time it's fullscreen and in the centre.
In my opinion it's too bad for the original shot and besides, when you play it on a TV or something it's just an overwhelming piece of text.
I know it's the style that anyone uses for himself. I give just my opinion. I do like stylish text in the top or bottom corner more

Well, try to search on youtube for some 'basic' tags, like city / trip / holiday / family / etc.
For example: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=city+trip+family&aq=f

Well, it's time for another one.
This time a summary of the first movie I ever made. I used PD7 and used the basic techniques.
The complete movie is approx. 45 minutes, but for YouTube and all of my friends I made this summary of 4:20min.
The video is shot @ "the Oranjecamping" in Interlaken Switzerland during the European Championschip in 2008. The Oranjecamping is a camp site specially made for Dutch fans. They had even one in South-Africa last year.
We were in Switzerland for 3 days (day before match, matchday and day after) and this is the result.
Enjoy!

Thanks
Maybe to give this thread a jump-start it's a good idea for everybody to post his/her best movie created with PowerDirector.
A bit of a showcase or something like that!

So many topics, but so little movies made by the members of the community.
I thought: what about making a special topic where you can post a link to your latest creation.
It would be nice to add some details as background-info such as: used camera, subject, when filmed and what was the purpose of the movie.
I'll kick off with a movie I made last week:
http://vimeo.com/23722380
Used camera: JVC Everio GZ-MG155 of my parents
Subject: my younger brother could be the champion if he would win the game, he plays for the blue/white striped team
Filmed: 7th of may 2011
Purpose: give the boys and parents a good memory of the game
Enjoy!
Criticism is welcome, ofcourse.

Thank you so much for your fast and helpful answers!
Can't wait to try them
Any more tips are always welcome, offcourse.

Hello all,
I'm editing and making movies for a while now with PD 9.
What costs me the most of my time is looking for and using good backgroundmusic.
Now the question is: do you have some tips for finding good backgroundmusic?
Especially instrumental/acoustic music?
I've searched on YouTube for a while, but lots of stuff there is crappy.
It would be nice when someone could mention a quality-site or artists/albums with good music etc.
Thnx in advance!

Thanx Nina for your help, but it just doesn't work for me..
I set my preferred track heights, put an image on the timeline and saved it.
Restarted PD, opened the psd I just saved and all the tracks are back to default.
Maybe you are talking about extra tracks you added or something? I'm just talking about saving the heights of the default tracks..
|
|
Well, actually that doesn't work for me.
I set the heights as I would like, saved the "project" as template.psd, but when I open it all the tracks are set back to the default height.

|
Hello all,
I'm working with PD9 Ultra 64, v2330.
I have the track layout edited: the video/audio tracks I use stretched to higher tracks and I the ones I don't use shrinked to as low as possible.
But everytime I restart PD, the tracks are in the default height and I don't see any option to save my personal layout.
Is there any way to do this?
Thnx in advance
