Quote: I don't quite understand this:

Also try creating a DVD folder and playing it off the HDD using your PC based DVD player to make sure it is a burn problem not a rendering problem.

Do you mean to test it will play as a file on the HDD using media player?

Exactly. Trying to work out whether it is a PD render problem or a DVD burn problem. If PD creates a HDD "DVD" which plays OK you may be able to use another programme to burn this to DVD disc.
Also have you tried playing back the burnt DVD on the computer or a stand alone DVD player?
Under the configuration tab in the burn submenu you can select the slowest burn speed which might help.

Also try creating a DVD folder and playing it off the HDD using your PC based DVD player to make sure it is a burn problem not a rendering problem.
You can place a colour board in the video track then drop the video in the PIP track. In the PIP track you can edit the size and orientation of the video.

Hi Sandra
Can you create a file on your HDD of your project (while the original DVD is in the drive)? Use mpeg2 DVD high quality setting.
Once you have produced the file start a new project and import the file you have madeand then use this to create a disc.
Quote: Perhaps it has been restored in one of the the latest updates/builds for PD7.

No it hasn't.
You need to have the DivX codec installed independently on your PC before PD can utilise it.

The simplest way to create a DVD compliant disc is to use the create disc module. You can either choose to create a HDD folder or burn directly to DVD.
On small clips I tested I could see no difference at all. I select 7 as matter of course "just in case".
Rename it and remove the .bak part of the extension. Then it should open.
There is mostly "please help" and "this isn't working" posts on this forum (including my own).
However I would like to balance the field by posting that after many years of being a Video Studio devotee, I have decided to ditch it and continue with my successes with Power Director.

I started out with Premiere but the ongoing costs of upgrading were beyond my budget at the time so I swapped to Ulead. Then after many years and 4 upgrades I now have a AVCHD camcorder. I needed to upgrade editing software and upgraded to VS11+.
The programme was slow, crashed from time to time and was so infuriating I downloaded PD7. Not much better so I upgraded the hardware. Slight improvement but Cyberlink came through with a fix and now I can effortlessly use my clips with PD7. There is still a problem with AVCHD rendering engine so now I render in Bluray format which is as clear as the originals.
Anyway, the last couple of projects I have used PD7 but have now downloaded Ulead X2 trial and have started a small project. I surprised myself with how I now don't like the lay out, can't edit clips as quickly or intuitively, can't import folders etc etc. I have become a PD convert !!

On balance, although there are still a few tweaks to go with PD I believe it is a better laid out product, better support for AVCHD editing and I will be staying with it.

If you use multiple pip tracks and overlap each 2/25 sec clip by half you will get 1/25 frames. The limitation is that on the last track you will get a 2/25 frame before you start the sequence again resulting in fewer that 25 separate frames in one second. Talk about tedious !!. There must be another programme better suited to this.
If you want to upload the final movie to a blog site then find out how large the file is allowed to be for your site - 100Mb? , 500Mb?

Then go to the produce tab > Create streaming file>next>WMV Then use the drop down box to select the quality which will determine the size of the resulting file. A little experimentation may be needed to see what setting gets the results .. try a "broadband" quality for starters.

good luck
Hi John,
as alluded to earlier myself and William your processor is just under the specs Cyberlink suggest for AVCHD editing. I too went through the process af downloading sample clips etc. Sometimes these clips are not at full bitrate.
Also it is a different story however when you have a whole project with 30 mins of clips you want to edit : things may not be as good then .
I think the Sony's ability to record in mpeg2 is great and I wish Panasonic and Canon also offered this but do not.
But as you say if the AVCHD becomes tedious you can always use mepg2 until you upgrade the computer.
In the preview window is there black space above and below the widescreen video ie is the project properties set as 4:3?

(check by going into menu>edit>aspect ratio).

There is no quick way to change the project back to 16:9 if you have started in 4:3.

You can stretch all the clips vertically, render then open a 16:9 project and stretch it back again .
Hi Ray

1. Resolution: DVD can use mpeg1 or 2 but mpeg2 has a higher resolution so use it. The end product will be different whether you use PAL (higher resolution but lower frame rate) than NTSC. In general use the frame rate your camera shot the video in.

2. Quality: DVD players can generally handle up to 9Mbps (9000Kbps). In the quality settings use Variable Bit rate (CVBR) encoding up to 9000kbps and select highest quality 7. PD doesn't have a 2 pass option (analyze then encode) but if this is available use it.

for web streaming I won't comment as I do little of this.

Hi Brandon,

The AVCHD rendering in PD is very unsatisfactory. Plenty of examples by myself and other AVCHD users. I'm pretty sure Dafydd has brought it to Cyberlink's attention.
A workaround which gives "almost as good as original" rendering is to use HD mpeg2 at around 20Mbps or BD output. The only catch is that you need a media player or BD player to watch the product. (or PC of course).

Another tip if you want to down convert to Standard Def is to use the create disk module, write to HDD folder, and then retrieve the VOB files from there. This is much better rendering then creating a file. (I have no idea why this would be so as one would assume it uses the same engine but is significantly better).

Hope this helps until a tweak is found.
I have found a few work arounds to maintain quality but it does mean changing AVCHD to BD or Burning DVD folders and retrieving the video file from there.

I think it is worth a look into it and thanks Dafydd for being the intermediary again (You sorted the Pana SD9 problem quickly for us : )
You are not alone Dan, it happens to my posts as well. They seem to stay dated at an older date (pages down the list).
I have a similar complaint with AVCHD 1080i rendering. See here for other examples.

Hi Paolo

Press F1 for the help screen or go through the Director's Chair Icon (top left).

Undo will only work if the file has been changed since the last time it was opened.
You can also set the number of undo levels in the preferences section.
Hi Doug

I downloaded a sample clip and it runs fine in PD with my set up (pretty high spec PC). Your problem might be your PC configuration. What is it?

A drawback of PD is not having the ability to manipulate the frame rate when rendering to a file. Use PAL as this is the closest match to 24fps.

I rendered using MPEG2 720p profile and it looks smooth playback on the PC.

Hope this helps

This is a snapshot from a Panasonic SD9 clip:

Here is a snapshot of a clip which has been rendered by PD which is unable to use SVRT on the SD9 clips.

Here is a snapshot of a competitor's rendering which will quick copy the clips if they haven't editing applied ie SVRT equivalent
http://www.4shared.com/file/68298322/ff6893f7/Ulead_AVCHD_1080i.html

Quite a difference to me and it is noticeable when played back over a media player.

I hope PD can see if they can get the SD9 to be recognised as a standard profile so SVRT can be utilised as PD7 really is my preferred software.
