I use a lot of SS and find the same. Its still in it infancy and they have a lot o work to do to fine tune and sort out SS. Its is very frustrating having to reload a large project just to test the sound levels. I have had to do this over and over on my project.
Lets hope they can keep PD alive in their product line to make these needed future enhancements. For some reason I feel they are stretched for good programmers and are running on a shoestring budget doing the best they can with what limited resources they have.

Produce the video.
Create new project and re-import the produced video.
Slide the position marker to that special point.
Split that video at the and delete the other half and produce.
and repeat for the other half.

I have a feeling Jaime is correct. I don't believe MPG files are specific to regions. When I created the disk with PAL setting, the video would flicker on my TV Set like a normal PAL disk would so the setting did change the DVD.
We will find out in a week or so when the recipient plays the disk.

Once again I agree with the Callinectes sapidus.
I just reduced the resolution of my preview and it makes a lot of difference.

I BINGO what Barry said. That extra track comes in useful when doing clip alterations.
I may suggest putting a short stinger in there someplace lined up with a particular video action. Use the stinger to test if the video has moved in relationship to your sound.
For instance at the end of my video I have a salamander whacking his tail in the water and I have a small stinger (the sound of a loud water drop).
If they are lined up correctly when I play that segment, I know things did not shift on me without me knowing.

thanks
that will save me trial and error

I need to make one PAL disk to send to Europe.
I already produced a mpg-2 while NTSC was selected in preferences. Now do I have to do a separate production for PAL or can the mpg-2 created when NTSC was selected be used to create a PAL disk by simply changing preferences to PAL and then creating the disk.
Other words: can the same mpg-2 be used to make both a PAL or NTSC disk with PD9? or do we need separately produced files on for PAL and one for NTSC.
Thanks

If you don't have a direct firewire or usb connection from the camera to the computer, you may be able to get a video input card or video grabber card like the old snappys for a component video input into your computer.

Let me add sound effects (you can spend a lifetime here)

You can't really leagally grab people's music form youtube, the most I would do is a common sound effect or as I have done and Osprey's peeping voice.

Well I used Total Recorder with its default setting and a MS-VX1000 webcam mic to record the voice overs.
From now on I'm sticking with mp3 as Wave Editor can load files made with Totalrecorder in the mp3 format.
I don't know if there is an advantage of WAV vs MP3 vs WMA.
Well compatibility wasn't the issue then but the amount of anomalies I have come across since video editing do wear on me.
Thanks for your guys time. I know its not easy trying to solve every issue on the board and you guys do your best to do so in such a variable environment.

One things that is a challenge you should get to know is how to add and remove from your project without things mysteriously moving around on you.
Such as:
changing the length of a clip
removing a transition
slicing a clip or adding to it.
Inserting into the middle of a clip
precisely moving things around or repositioning.
Its frustrating having lots of voice overs, clips in subtracks and then they are suddenly out of sink because you thought the linked tracks or grouped objects functions would prevent things from going out of sync.
These are areas that are important to my style of production.

I did attach a wma file to my previous post but I cant find my old post. Too much to sift through while searching for it.
BF-EGGS.WMA Soundforge has no issues with opening this file and editing it. Wave editor will error and say file not imported.
Here it is again.
|
|
I thought I'd post this as a follow up to my problem that went unresolved with no resolving answer a few months ago.
I could not get Wave Editor to edit a WMA file. So I tried last light in Audasity and an error message came up saying WMA is proprietary and they don't have the rights to edit or load a wma file.
So this must be the reason wave editor wont do it either although it doesn't tell you and leaves you guessing.
Unfortunately my recording software used wma as the default start up format and I went quite far with wma before going to mp3.
All this compatibility issues are getting out of hand and is definitely souring the consumer who is unaware of these issues.
Luckily Sound Forge will process wma but my hunch is they payed royalties to microsoft to do so.

I see below -6db is desirable and some require -20db.
What confuses is me is that you can have a voice over below -6db and still have it sound bad.
So there must be a difference between bad sounding scratchy/noisy voice overs and distorted voice overs (higher db).
I need to learn more about this sound thing.
Before I buy a microphone, I need to borrow a good one to rule out that its not my computer creating the noise in my voice overs. Got my eyes on something similar and a snowball mic.

|
What I needed to know by what scale or reference the decible readings are being take.
I see it is the scale of the VU meter is used. Now that makes sense. When measured by a VU meter, the sound has to be 0 to -6db.
And as you say, any rises above 0db gets clipped and distortion occurs. And thus the link to the VU meter you provided. That's quite valuable info there.
I have 70 Voice Overs to redo, and I may try and see if Public Access has a recording room. My webcam mic is not cutting it.
Thanks again Carl
Thanks

Thanks Carl.
Not too sure what peak level -6 db even means right now.

|
I feel I am ready to put the first rev of my 30 min documentary on pegmedia so public access stations can use it. I noticed on thing about sound requirements as follows:
All content should be broadcast quality with good audio at -6db peak.
What dies this mean and how can this be controlled in PD9. I noticed the sound adjustments are limited and wonder if someone can provide their experience with getting a good sounds video with lots of voice overs and music.
How do I accomplish this standard?
How do I test that I have accomplished this standard?
Are there any sound tutorials I can access to understand the terminology so I can work to meeting this standard in PD9?

oops spoke too soon.
It burnt with no sound. I never use full speed for burning disks and always drop it down a bit.
Resolved but strange: Had to go into my DVD players setting and fiddle with sound settings. TV would play properly.
