Tutorial for someone who is actually new to this

Hello,
I am new to video editing, and hope someone can point me to a book or site (text ideally) giving a tutorial for how to use Power Director 9 to edit and produce video. Of course I have seen and gone through the Quick Start, the User's guide, and the "tutorial" but they all appear to assume the purchaser already knows quite a bit about editing. It is quite frustrating. All respect to CyberLink for putting out that much documentation, but I do hope there is something out there for people just getting into this.

I'm sure some will read this and think I must be an idiot, but give me the benefit of the doubt and consider what would be useful if you really had no idea what a keyframe is etc. and needed a step by step guide to putting together a simple video. I can't find books on the common sites, which is puzzling.

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

Welcome to the forum and editing with PD9.

Have a look at this thread. There is a download for a manual that might be of interest to you.

You might also find some good tips or tutorials in this thread

We are happy to help new users get started in editing with PD9. Althought there is a rather steep learning curve, once you get started you will likely get hooked.

Hi Robert from a fellow Robert....one of the best tips I can give for a newbie is to experiment. You can't hurt anything so just play with the program.

Use the split and delete buttons to cut out what you don't want, right click on everything to see what options are available, play with the effects you like, eg video enhance, slow motion, text inserts.

What I love about PD is it is very visual, full of buttons with pretty pictures on them. Play and have fun and if you are trying to do something specific just ask away and someone here will usually have a way of doing it.

Cheers

Hello There! You sound exactly like me about 2 weeks ago when i first brought PD9 after previously using Windows Live Movie Maker. Honestly when PD9 loaded up i stared blankly at the screen for several seconds before my heart sank & i came over all depressed!!! I Never thought i'd get the hang of it as it looked soooooooooo complicated. But after several very helpful comments on here from fellow users & watching some of the youtube tutorials ive now done several videos all published on youtube & am finding PD9 really easy to use.Every time i use it im really impressed at what it can do & learn more things with each use.

My advice would be to watch as many tutorials as you can-some you will enjoy & some will be boring, trick is to find a user whos presenting you like & watch all of that persons videos of PD9.And as stated, for a day or two just experiment with clips or photos so you know what your doing before you start to tackle a full video. If you can play around with it for a couple of days you will soon master all the basics. Dont be afraid to ask for help & dont be put off thinking its too daunting-it isnt, its really-really easy to use, just stick with it as the results will blow you away!!!

One things that is a challenge you should get to know is how to add and remove from your project without things mysteriously moving around on you.

Such as:

changing the length of a clip
removing a transition
slicing a clip or adding to it.
Inserting into the middle of a clip
precisely moving things around or repositioning.

Its frustrating having lots of voice overs, clips in subtracks and then they are suddenly out of sink because you thought the linked tracks or grouped objects functions would prevent things from going out of sync.

These are areas that are important to my style of production.

Hi Robert,

As you explore, etc., you may want to use the "undo" and "redo" buttons regularly.

Hello Robert

Welcome to the forum

There are two very good tutorials (and many more) from PDToots that explain the basics of PD. These are titled 'First Project' Part 1 and Part 2 and give an excellent insight into the capabilities of the PD program.

Even though they use PD8 as the example PD9 works in a similar way.

Happy editing
