After 3 days with no internet connection.....

Thanks Cap'n Kevin. I found the saved files and initially I was able to open one of them albeit about the same as my saved file - all blacked out where the video clips and fade transitions should be.
However, after trying different dates/times I can get none of them to open.
There are about 18 different "saves" but none will now open.
The one that did open at first had no clips in the library though.

Actually I've just discovered I can't even open PD at all!

Ok fixed that - just have to log off and start again and it opens ok but every saved file for the last day (16th Nov) still has just black spaces where the clips & fades should be. Earlier saves are just the same but much less data on the timeline and no clips in the library!

It seems that the clips in the timeline just need the link data (location on the disc) to bring them back to life. No, I haven't changed the location on the disc. I seem to recall that I solved this same problem some months ago on another project but can't remember how to now.

Also, playing back either the saved or auto saved version there is no music even though the music is shown on the music track. The only thing that plays back are the titles!

Any ideas please?
This sounds very similar to the problem I and others were having some months ago - freezing at transitions. My solution was to stop filming in full HD (60fps) and go down a notch to 30fps. Everything worked perfectly then.
PD8 could not handle 60 fps from my Sanyo Xacti FH-1.

BTW when I tried to log on I got so much trouble being told my password was wrong and that I had a wrong user name so I changed my u/N from 7Phil7 to 7Phil77. Oh boy!
Ok so there I was putting together this little 9 min video with numerous clips and fade transitions. I was working at the end of the vid just trying to get the music and video in sync and clicked the save icon on the top LH corner. It turned blue as it had done many times during this video but this time it stayed blue and the cursor had this blue circle going round and round. The whole screen whited out so it had to be closed down. The computer was making a strange humming sound at this time. Aaaaaaaargh!
When I reopened it it had lost all the clips in the library and on the timeline. The timeline is still there but black where the clips are supposed to be. The music and titles are still there.

If I remember correctly this happened to me once before but I can't remember what happened. I looked in my backup HDD but it is not there either.

What can I do to get these clips back in the timeline before I go completely mad?

Thanks guys.

Phil.
Carl,

Thanks for that - yes, it worked!
I changed it to 8 and just started it up this evening after being out at work all day and the screen lit up with all the icons almost immediately.

Thanks again for your help.
But now that I have selected 2 processors to run in "Boot" the computer will not boot up when switched on. The fans run full tilt and the screen stays blank. I have to press the reboot button which means the computer then starts up from scratch and not from the sleeping mode.

So I obviously went to change the "BOOT" to let's say 4 processors but found it only has as an option either 1 or 2. The other options which were there have vanished!
Ha!!!

Now then - does anyone know how to get me out of this mess please?
Ok, so now, after communications with Chad and earlier, RobertS, I have managed to get it to play using only 2 processors out of the 8 on the i7-920 chip.
I'm not entirely sure of what the other settings I have tampered with are set at but it works now.

This setting of 2 processors was from using 'msconfig' in the Start menu and then clicking on it and going to the second tab, "Boot' and clicking on 'Advanced options. Then the 'Number of processors' box is ticked and in the drop down menu selected '2'. I had previously set this figure to 2 but it had reset to 1. I had even reset it to 4 as well as I had read this would improve 'Boot up time'.
As I write this I can clearly see the bmem display showing only 2 processors working. I will check the status from time to time. Presumably it needs all 8 processors for rendering and burning? It will be interesting to find out if it automatically uses them all without me needing to reset it.

It would appear that Cyberlink has a problem with preview playback with Full HD at 60 fps (24Mbps).

It may well be that I will only be using 30 fps (12Mbps) in future.

Thanks to Chad, RobertS and others who have helped.
Carl,

Thanks for the suggestion but file processing was already turned off.
I see Chad has bumped Andy's original thread on the same issue back into the spotlight again.
You cannot imagine the lengthy instructions Support gave me recently after waiting a week to get back to me.

Thanks again,
Now when the movie opens in the timeline all the video clips are black with 0.00 figs in them and when it plays there is no audio and no video.

Does anyone know what is going on there please?

The original problem of freezing on transitions ONLY happens on clips which are 1920 x 1080 (60frames/sec progressive, 24Mbps).
Other 1920 x 1080 specs are ok and do not freeze. ie interlaced, 60 fields/sec, 16Mbps and Progressive, 30 frames/sec, 12Mbps.
So it looks like it is the 24Mbps which is problematic to Cyberlink.

Thanks again for your help.
Hi again.

I have taken a deep breath and decided to start a thread following on from my previous thread back in May -

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15/11361.page#52353

I have followed many instructions from here on the forum, installed new software, followed instructions from Support but to no avail.

I thought I had solved the problem but I have it back with a vengeance. This only happens with Full HD Progressive. All other formats are ok. I have undertaken exhaustive tests.

I have just shot a wedding in Full HD Progressive on my Xacti VPC-FH1 and put the clips in the Timeline and added Fade transitions between clips. After closing PD down overnight and reopening the next day it freezes at the first transition. The cursor keeps moving along and plays the audio. Then pressing either the Pause or Stop button it locks up for exactly 9 seconds before you can operate anything else. However, moving the cursor manually over the transitions is ok and the video keeps up and doesn't freeze.
The only way to unfreeze the preview is to change the length of the transition. You know, 20 transitions in the video. Piece of cake!
Another way to have it freeze at transitions is to change the playback quality. You don't even have to close it down to get this to happen.

I did a search to see if there were any answers out there or if any others were experiencing similar problems. I noticed that Andy never got an answer to his exact same problem.
See here - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/10098.page#44673
I noticed that an 8 page thread of Fred's didn't seem to get a solution.
See here - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/90/7771.page

Yesterday I downloaded a trial version of Corel VideoStudio X3 and edited the whole wedding the same day with no problems. Put simply, I didn't need to follow a lot of instructions to correct a problem - it just did it for me. I didn't need to get depressed and upset wondering why it was like this - it just did it for me

Please can someone explain to me why Corel can do it ok and Cyberlink cannot?

Thanks,

Phil

Andy (see top post for link) has just replied to my PM and confirms he still has the exact same problem as me.

He has Windows 7 and I have Vista.

I have just uninstalled PD and installed new software but still have the same problem - preview hangs at transitions.

Still waiting for a solution please.

Thanks.
Thanks Dafydd,

Ok, managed to close PD8 down following your instructions re PDR8.exe.

Then the ONLY way I can open the troublesome (or any) video is to go to the PDS file and open it from there.

Having done that two videos STILL STOPPED at the first transition. So I set the transition to 4 secs and it worked ok but stopped (hung) at the next transition. ie just the same as before. This is with newly downloaded PD8 software.

Sorry, but there is no change.
Hi. Can anyone tell me how to stop PD8 from running in the background?

Thanks,

Phil.
Did Andy ever get a solution to his problem which is exactly the same as my problem now?

Pls advise.
Ok I'm back again.

Was the dxdiag I sent of any use?

I have opened up PD8 twice tonight with the same 5 min video and twice it has "crashed" without it actually being worked on. It just crashed now while I am writing this!

OK, back to the problem. I clicked on PD and it told me this - "PD Deluxe" 8.00.274 (Shouldn't it be ultra? The Disc I have says "Upgrade to PD 8 Ultra...) .

SR No VDE091014-01

Is that of any help?

I also turned off shadow files but they were only turnned on AFTER all the problems I was experiencing before. A box came up and I switched them on but then saw your instructions to switch them off so did so.

I don't know how to do screen shots or screenshots of what exactly. Can you pls advise?

Phil

I hope that was ok.

Anyway I've since tried out some other tests.

On the first I played a small 1 minute video with two scenes and two Fade transitions - one at the beginning and the other inbetween the two scenes.

It played and played several times with no real problem except a small momentary hang just on the line where the middle Fade finishes.

On the second it was an 11 minute video with numerous scenes all joined by Fades. I played it several times with no problems at all.
Then I decided to shorten one scene where it began with a whiteout. After I shortened the scene it just played up the same as my original problem. It just will not play wherever you put the cursor and it has the 10 second delay before you can use the start/stop etc control again. Completely unuseable.

So I then went back to the original 5 min problem video and it played all the way through with no problem! Can you believe it!?
Then I started it again and used fast fwd to just before the first transition and then changed to play the normal speed - it hung at the transition!!! Several retries and it is just like it was before. No good.

What is happening here?

Well it sure does look like ANY slight alteration/adjustment has a devastating effect. It sure looks like the programme is unstable to me.
Trying again
I'll try again to attach dxdiag compressed file.
Tony,

How do I post the dxdiag report? There seems to be pages of it.
It burnt perfectly ok! No signs of any sawtooth distortion.
All the shots were taken inside at night.

So the problem seems to be the software or the hardware.
Dafydd,

Thanks for your help.

I was too daunted by your questions/suggestions so this is what I tried -

1. I still had the two icons on the desktop for PD8 for installation so I tried installing it again. It worked. Don't ask me how - I don't have any idea.

2. Then I tried opening PD8 from the desktop quick launch icon - no good.

3. Then I tried opening from the All Programs list - it worked. PD8 opened.

4. Then I tried adding the PDS file I had previously created and saved using PD8 in My Videos file but you can't see that in the window as it shows only manilla folders.

5. Then I went back to the actual My Videos file and clicked on the PDS file of the previous video I had created on the timeline before PD8 went AWOL. Bingo! It opened in PD8!

6. Then I tried previewing the movie but it stopped at the first transition so, on a hunch, and completely at my wits end I doubled the size of the transition from 2 secs to 4 secs. Bingo, it worked! After some more trial and error I changed all the transitions from 2 to 4 secs and it worked ok.

7. Then I added a couple of more small titles in the middle of the movie and tried the preview again. It stuck on the transitions again!!!!! but kept playing the audio as if the movie was playing properly. Now I am at my wits end because I am certainly not going to change all the transitions to 8 secs.

Also noticeable in the movie is some sawtooth distortion that definitely was not there before the crash. It was perfectly ok then.

Anyway I will try to burn to disc and see what it comes out like and will report back again.

I certainly hope I can get this fixed because it is just a nightmare for me at present.
I am supposed to be doing this small project for a friend but it should surely be slightly easier than this.
