It took me a long time to figure out how to burn AVCHD to a standard DVD or DVD RW. But thanks to the good people on this forum I finally got it. I just wanted to share a few things that may help others.
To author a sharp video in the AVCHD format I turned off: Hardware acclerator (both the open CL option and the enable hardware decoding option) in preferences, unchecked smartfit and true theater sound in the create disc section. I then did an experiment and turned smartfit back on and the video was still very sharp.
I was also able to author a clear bluray disc using the H.264 format which takes less space than mpeg 2 by unchecking hardware acclerator and true theater sound.
thanks everyone

Hi Tomasc
Thank you very very much. I burned a good DVD RW AVCHD. I had the hardware acceleration on because without it video is choppy when I do a preview in the make disc mode. I also thought burning to a DVD or a DVD RW would be the same except for erasing the RW.
So I suppose I can edit with Hardware acceleration on but just remember to turn it off when burning to a disc.
And I suppose this would apply to bluray as well. What settings would I use to burn AVCHD video to bluray. The MPEG 4 setting?
I don't understand why I had to turn off smart fit. And would that apply to burning all types of discs?
thanks you so much for your help

Hi Tomasc and Game tips person (response 2)
Attached is screencap 4 and 5 I mentioned in my first response.
Screencap 6 is from a AVCHD RW created in Pinnacle. No distortion.
Game tips person I am glad you popped in the conversation. As Tomasc mentioned I have been trying to figure this out for awhile.
My Pinnacle studio 14 cannot create a AVCHD file for me to send you but I can create a mpeg4 file if you want me to. I would even be willing to mail someone a RW if necessary. The original video from my camcorder is quite clear.

Hi Tomasc and Game tips person (response 1)
Tomasc your screecap looks great. I attached 2 screecaps to show my settings. I think they were correct.
What is interesting is when I am in edit mode video in the player looks pretty good but as soon as I switch to create disc the video is distorted. Even the PD menu Around the world is distorted. Screencap 3 shows zig-zag or zipper like distortion along all the edges. The Lettering of New York, London etc is distorted. Screencap 4 the pip under "My Videos", if looked at closely shows zig-zag lines on the left side of the ladies hat in the foreground. Screencap 5 was taken in edit mode and is much sharper and no zig-zag lines on the ladies hat.
Because I have so many screecaps I have to divide my response into two parts

I tired but Imgburn gets stuck at 32% synchronizing cashe. It also froze when I tired to do a full disc erase of a DVD RW but I figured out how to do a quick erase from the tools menu. See attachment.
I am a little confused why I need to do a Imgburn test. Dosen't my test using Pinnacle studio to burn a AVCHd to a DVD prove that the problem is with PD since the AVCHD video burned with Pinnacle is clear. Maybe some setting?

Sorry I have been slow to respond. My car died. Carl thanks for your suggestions on downloading Imgburn.
Tomasc I extracted the video you made for me. I haven't had time to learn Imgburn but I did the test burning with Pinnacle studio 14 and with my original file and the remake of it from you. In both cases either file burned crystal clear using studio 14 and they both burned with poor quality using Powerdirector. I get ghost like images and some pixels.
If I burn to bluray with powerdirector as mpeg 2 everything is clear. I am stumped. I would like to burn short HD videos to DVD's as AVCHD using PD

I tried to be careful installing imgburn but still must have installed something. When on line I get a pop up that says please update your version of media player. Not Microsoft media player but just media player. I dare not click on it.
Also, are there any video tutorials how to burn AVCHD video to a DVD disc with imgburn?

By unzipping do you mean to find the video in the stream folder. I have done that. Also can you give me a safe link to get imgburn so extra junk won't be downloaded along with the imgburn program?

Thanks for your efforts. I am still unable to author a sharp AVCHD video on a DVD. I even tried producing to AVCHD 1920x1080/60i first then burning with smart fit but no success. I have tried but 1080i/60 and 1080p/60 with the project set at the correct frame rate. Even the power director menu doesn't look sharp on my computer or my TV. I have tried different discs and different burners with no success. The only thing that works is to use my old Pinnacle studio 14 program but I much prefer to edit in PD.
The extra video layer that I get looks sort of pencil sketchy and when mixed with the good video makes the overall video look bad. Any thoughts?

In the past I posted that when I tried to author AVCHD video to a blu-ray disc the quality was very poor using PowerDirector. My work around was to convert to High definition MPEG 2. The results were good but MPEG 2 takes up a lot more space.
I recently tried to author to a standard DVD disc using AVCHD video and again the video was poor even though there is a setting for it in the create disc options. The video when watched on a Sony set top blu ray player or on my computer looks like it has two layers. There is a grainy ghost like layer underneath the main video.
I have an old version of Pinnacle studio (version 14). When I author a DVD with it using the same AVCHD file the video is very crisp when played on the The Sony blu ray player or on my computer. Therefore, it is not my blu ray burner or the discs. This makes me think I am doing something incorrect in PowerDirector although I can't imagine what that would be.
I did a screen shot to show the settings I am using and also attached a 7 sec AVCHD clip if anyone would like to try and author to a DVD or a DVD RW to see the results.
thanks to anyone who gives this a try.

Has anyone tried to edit 4K video. How does it work? Are proxy files generated? Is it a nightmare-very slow-etc.

Hi James
I looked at your footage and it looks like mine with the glasses I am using. I actually see almost no red in the rocks at all. Do you see some red with a green tinge or almost no red at all?
What glasses are you using?

Hi James
I attached 2 short clips, one in 2D and one in 3D. when I put the glasses on the red rocks lose their color. I wonder if it is my glasses. I see the 3D effect but lose the color.

Hi James
My main problem is the color change. As I said red rocks look green with or without the anaglyph glasses on my monitor or TV played through my bluray player. I am not sure what to make of this. I watched a cyberlink tutorial on youtube and followed the instructions.
thanks,

I have never been successful burning AVCHD to DVD RW discs with PD. The video played on my Sony bluray player has ghost like layers of images. But if I create a disc with a different older video editing program the disc plays crystal clear. I have the same problem authoring bluray discs when trying to burn a disc in AVCHD. In PD I have to burn as a mpeg 2 for clear video. Of course I can't do that with a DVD RW with PD.
My question is can I author a AVCHD disc that will play on a home bluray player with Imgburn?

Hi James1
I just finished an experiment and left the 3D slider control in the middle. 3D was pretty good but the colors were off. Red rocks looked greenish, no red at all with or without the red/cyan glasses. Moving the 3D slider control made no difference. See captured images.

Has anyone tried to convert 2D video to 3D? How well did it work?

Thanks Carl
It worked.

I tried that but it only selects the video and audio on the primary track. All tracks below remain nonselected.

I have a project that is about 77 min long. There is a 2 frame gap at the 53 min mark on the timeline that I want to close. In other words I want to move all clips on all tracks that are positioned to the right of the 53 min mark to the left by 2 frames to close the gap. I can't figure out how to highlight all the clips I want to move so I can move all of them at the same time. I can only highlight what I can seen on the timeline. If I compresses everything on the timeline from the 53 min mark to the end the clips are too small to work with.
thanks,
