Hello, Tmace!

Just a thought, but do you have another programme that will handle your video file(AVCHD or MP4)? If so, try rendering your clips there(may need to do each clip individually) then bring the newly-rendered clips back to PD14 for editing. Perhaps an earlier version of Power Director(if you still have one alongside PD14) may help solve that issue.

Let us know how you got on, okay?

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Neil.
Something a bit screwy here!

I check my emails, seeing that I have received a reply to my last post re: Suggestions For PD15, click on it and find it was my own post! HUH? Hey! Whattsa-matter you guys at-a Cyberlink Huh?

Cheers!

Quote: Thanks Neil. BTW - if you choose, my real name is Jack. Boongsong is a nickname I received during my 3 tours in Thailand during the Vietnam war.
You are so right on the renumbering. But, as much as it is a "pain-in-the-butt", being retired with nothing but time, it definitely kept me busy. My last trip to Laos had 6 1/2 hrs of video (over 1400 clips). But it was worth it as I used PD13 to do my editing and ended-up with 4 DL discs of great video. Was there during the Asian New Year where water is the "game". If you don't want to get wet, stay home. And, you are right - in the end is where the REAL fun is. Well worth it and an inner satisfaction of something really difficult accomplished. The only other time I had that feeling was when I started driving the big trucks - 70+ feet long, 80,000 lbs. Never believed I could do it but was successful. Started when I was around 60 yrs old.
It is now 6:25 P.M. Pacific, around 1:30 P.M. Saturday your time (I'm guessing). BTW - I have a cousin that lives in Adelaide.
Right back at you = Happy New Year and hoping it is better than the old one. Really enjoy the conversation.

Hi, Jack!

(Oops, gotta be careful there, don't want to be yelling that out at an airport, ay? ha-ha) Interested that use DL discs. Are you able to play those you've made on a domestic DVD player? My own experience tells me it's a no-no! I've burned content to a dual-layer(DVD-9) disc, complete with menu, as you might do, upon completion, loaded the disc into a domestic player.... Nothing! The player just didn't want to know about it! Where such a player will happily cope with commercially-made DL discs(I have the complete Harry Potter series which are all on DL discs), the self-same player will "spit the dummy"(Aussie vernacular = throw a tantrum) if you try to play a home-burn DL disc on it. Thus I use DL discs only for storage purposes. Once bitten, twice shy, ay!

By the way, time-wise you were quite accurate, I only got to your post about half-an-hour after you posted it, and you must've logged out shortly after putting it up on the forum.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Quote: If each post had searchable keywords that a user could define and subsequent users could effectively search uniquely on those keywords then SOLVED or many others, if keywords, could add value. As it stands it offers very little value in the moment or latter. Not everyone sees it in their interest (financial or feature wise) to update to current releases, many valued users/contributors of versions prior to PD14 and offer the forums significant contributory value. Having things simple thrown in a big pile with no valid means of searching appropriately offers little.

I would like to comment a little on what Jeff has written above as he makes, in my opinion a very valid point.

let's not forget that a fair few of the regular contributors, not me I hasten to add, do not have to pay out for new software when a new version is released. So it does not matter to them how many new versions are released, they just carry on as normal. Let us also consider the parents of youngsters who, perhaps find it difficult to find the not small amount of money required to upgrade. Also, many retired people who are not always "well off" like to tinker in their new found leisure time with their camera, and then edit the results in PowerDirector. Then there are those editors who do not need the features added to the new version so why should they have to upgrade just to stay part of the latest forum.

like me, what a lot of these people have in common is the ability to join a PD forum concentrating on the particular version they have purchased. I found that I made many new cyber friends when I visited the PD13 forum and gained a great deal of knowledge from them. Now, because I will not be bullied into upgrading, this has been taken away from me. I had a look at the "previous version" forum and didn't recognise a soul.

I do ask though, is it really necessary at all to have a forum for each new version? Let's face it, the knowledge base in 14 could answer any obscure questions from previous versions standing on it's head.

anyway, enough said, I will now go and slide back down into Jeff's pit and herd a few cats

By the way, this is not a rant, it's heartfelt.

Robert

Hi, Shadowman(Robert)!

I bought PD14 because it had some features I wanted in the way of editing, but had to learn a few "new tricks"(where's Denis Waterman when you need him Ha-Ha!) in using PD14 but I was disappointed by the disc authoring component of the newest version, and have said so in the PD14 forum. I have also delved into the PD13 forum, read and commented on some posts there as well. I would imagine several similarities between versions 13 and 14 of Power Director, so experience in one would go a long way in helping with the other. BUT.... and it's a BIG BUT! The PD13 Forum should've been kept separate as an individual forum until PD15 was launched and on sale to the public, and for several months thereafter, before relegation to the "Previous Versions" clutter.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Quote: I'm afraid that I'm rather stubborn and when I feel (as I do now) that I'm being pushed or dragged along by the nose then I dig my heels in.

I've got PD13 and it does everything I want/need. Another thing I don't like are the pop ups that appear all the time when I'm working with it.

I only ever look at the forum that is relevant to my version and that's gone now. If ever I decide to upgrade for some reason the forum may again be of relevance to me.

Hi, Longedge!

The PD13 forum isn't "gone" as such, it's just been buried among the other "previous versions", so you can still comment on, and reply to other posts about PD13, just remember where it's been "tucked away", that's all.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

  1. The more ram you have for video editing the better! Sounds a bit "sheepish"(ha-ha - er, sorry, I'll take that ba-a-a-ack!)

  2. I don't use shadow file! Neither do I!

  3. Bring most useful features that have been dropped from some previous version, definitely! Like burning discs at DVD SP!

  4. Improve Motion Tracker... Hmmm, I've only used it experimentally, but I suppose it could do with a bit of tweaking.

  5. 5. Improving text fonts usability, can place anywhere on screen by hold down left button mouse, I'll go along with that!

Cyberlink, you've got some work ahead of you!

So true what you say. If I use the software to decode the camera's system, it will allow me to burn all videos to disc. However, I don't like the end product so I just labor by renaming each clip so they are in the sequence taken. Takes me a long time, but, that way I can import them into PD to make my videos. I can import them directly from the camera but too many clips have duplicate file exts and D can't decipher them.
Keep up the good work. Enjoy the back n forth.

Hi, Boongsong!

Yep! Been there - done that! It can be a bugger of a job! Hook the camera via USB to computer(or, in my case, if I choose, pull out the SD card and insert it to a card reader), create a folder to store the contents, copy the contents to that folder, then you're presented with this wierd numbering system that you've simply got to go through each "clip", click on "properties"(right-click on mouse), note down the date and time the clip was shot, then renumber the clips to fit in to the chronological order......UGH! I've had to do this several times, either with my own stuff or some stuff a friend has shot, that I edit for him. It's a chore, all right! But in the end the clips are put in proper order, then comes the editing and that's where the REAL fun is!

I'm writing this at a little after 1.00pm on Boxing Day while you, up there in the USA, Britain and elsewhere are coming to the end of Xmas Day, or are early Boxing Day morning. Hope you had a great day and got plenty of good video to remember it! As for me, it leaves only one more thing to say, and that's: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Cheers!

Neil.
Quote: PD13 is a 'previous version' now that PD14 has been released. I'm only surprised it hasn't been merged earlier.

Hi, Mike!

As I said elsewhere, I think they should've waited until PD15 was launched and on sale before relegating PD13 to the Previous Versions forum.

Cheers!

Neil
Hi, all!

I'll add my 2 cents' worth(we don't even have 2-cent or 1-cent coins in Australia any more, did away with copper coins over 2 decades ago!) by saying it's a bit rude to do away with a forum if people are still using that software, to which the forum referred. I think Director Zone could've waited until PD15 was launched and on sale before relegating PD13 to the "Previous Versions" forum.

Cheers!

Neil
Hey, Boongsong! How's it goin'?

Barry The Crab has neatly sown up the answer! It's exactly as I would've said(something there about great minds... ay?) I have three different SD Card-based camera, used to have the software for two of them(Panasonics, SDR-S7 and SDR-S71) but misplaced the installation discs some time back, now I find, through experience I never even needed them to begin with. Hooking the cameras up to my computer via USB(the third camera, by the way, is a Canon "Legria" HF R506), then opening the content via the "Import Media Files" does the trick, no problems, alternately, the SD card can be inserted to a card reader and the camer doesn't need to connected at all! Though for your vintage device, you will have to hook up via USB. Those older cameras, like yours, used to have a facility whereby you could "copy" the camera's hard-drive content to an on-board(on the camera, that is) DVD drive that accepted the smaller diameter discs, usually DVD-R or DVD-RW, though some models may have used DVD+R or DVD+RW discs, Was yours like this? If so, though it's an extra step, you could "burn" your camera's HDD content to a disc(finalising in the camera) then use that disc in your computer's DVD drive and import the content that way. A friend of mine has such a camera, it also uses an SD card, but only for stills.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi everyone!

Happy Xmas! The day's nearly over for us here in Australia but for you in the USA, Britain and elsewhere, it's just dawning, or about to.

PD14 Patch causing problems? Seems I've had such an experience some years ago with PD7. I had the programme open whilst I was on-line and the little pop-up told me I should apply the upgrade build, I did and the programme crashed on the simplest tasks after that, I got so fed up In uninstalled it, then reinstalled, without the new patch! All went back to normal and PD7 behaved itself as it should've done. When "Cubbyhouse Films"(another Neil, as it happens, Hi, Neil! Hope you had a great Xmas!) sent me his old PD8 which he was no longer using, he reccomended installing a certain patch, thankfully that patch did not compromise the performance of PD8, but as I read the comments here about the problems caused by the latest patch for PD14, you'll excuse me for avoiding this new patch "like the plague!"

Cheers & Happy Festive Season!

Neil.
Hello Tomasc

I tried an Adorage transition effect on some old content I had been tinkering with. This content was old analogue video shot in 4:3 that I "touched up" by converting(through CLPV) to 16:9 and cleaning up the image with Fix/Enhance.

The Adorage Transition, to me, appears to have limited usefullness, at the beginning or end of a clip, spin in/out from/to any corner(with or without growing/shrinking) or growing in or shrinking out from/to black in the centre of the screen. I'm yet to see what other "hoops" Adorage can jump through, that'll come with time and a bit of experimentation.

Cheers!

Neil
Quote: Those Adorage transitions are a lot better than those user created transitions in the DZ. They can be the same ones for other NLE's. Example would be the box, circle, ellipse, and rectangular ones beats the same transitions created by most users in the DZ hands down for looking professional.

Tomasc!

Thanks! You really know how to make us users of Power Director feel like we're contributing.....Hmmm! Some of us may go to great lengths to create those transitions, others(like me with my two diagonal wipes) might want to keep it simple, but we do our best to provide an end-user with something to give his/her video that extra "zing"!

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, Karl!

Your query on "bulk" Power Tool edits, Hmmm. That's a tricky one! I think I'd best hand that one on to Dafydd Bevan or Optodata, and see what they come up with.

Season's Greetings!

Neil.
Quote: Oh, Neil, ... if it was my project I think I would probably do as you are suggesting but... I think the person mentioned that they wanted it along the entire video.

CS

Hi, CS!

As I said, it was just a thought! But on the subject of titles, I've learned a trick or two since installing PD14 Ultra. I've learned that each subsequent video(PiP track) behaves in the same fashion as the main video/audio track in that you can put in transitions of your own specific length(not possible in PD8 Ultra). This gave me the idea that, if I create my own title graphic in Microsoft's "Paint", if I lay the graphic on Tr.2(PiP), put a white colour board ahead of and behind it, set the white board to transparent in Chroma-Key, do likewise to the background of my graphic title, I can then experiment with using whichever transition effect that doesn't "black out" the scene in the background. I've achieved some amazing results!

Cheers!

Neil
Hi, Richmond Dan!

As I said, what I saw of the Adorage transitions, I didn't see, or didn't notice what you were referring to. I may try again at some future date and see what lies behind that "green door"(channeling Jim Lowe there, ha-ha).

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, KevinSJJ!

Welcome to the party(er... forum ha-ha)! Your comment: "When I went into power director 14, it doesn't show any of my installed effects" appears odd to me in a way. I'm assuming you must've created a couple of transition effects of your own? If so, they should be there. When you open the transitions "room" in PD14 you'll see the words "All Content" twice, then will follow, a list showing, from top: "My Favourites"; "Custom"; "Downloaded"; etc(with bracketed numbers showing how many effects in each category) Your effects should be tucked away in the "Custom" section. If you click on "All Content" in the section above this list, where it says "Import Media", it should reveal your transitions in among all the others. I created my own transitions(Diagonal Wipes, two versions: Top-right to Bottom-Left and Top-left to Bottom-right) which are freely available from the Director Zone website. these, as well as appearing in the "all content" section, I can choose to show them in isolation by clicking on "custom" from the aforementioned list of transitions. Hope that's of use.

Cheers!

Neil.
Quote: I was thinking of creating a title page that had the top portion 'blackened' and just stretching that title page over the entire timeline for how long the video duration was - essentially creating a mask like you stated Tony?!

I think that would be like a mask - I haven't actually use the 'mask' feature yet.

But that does cover up a portion of the video - the shrinking was the way to go to not lose any content - like Jeff stated.

CS

Unlike CS2014, I wouldn't be putting such an effect along the entire timeline of a video, It would be good as an intro title effect, and possibly also as an end credits effect where the credits scroll left across the top of the screen in that black space. Just a thought.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello, Karl3054!

I've noted that you've recorded the audio separately, I assume that to be, possibly, your narration track, perhaps. There may be no need to speed up the clip if you have an audio editing software on your computer that can adjust pitch without altering the length of the audio track. I have such software on my computer, I'll take the risk by naming it and hope I don't get my knuckles wrapped by the moderators, it's Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10, which I use to separately record narrations for my videos, and I add the track in after I've completed the video editing stage. This software has the necessary pitch adjustment where you can adjust the pitch of your voice higher or lower without affecting the length of the audio(e.g. 5 minutes will stay as 5 minutes).

Hope that might be of use to you.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, Richmond Dan & Tony!

I also noted the Adorage transition but I didn't see anything of Vitascene. I tried the Adorage effect once but wasn't impressed, so I simply don't bother with it. I'm perfectly happy with the other transition effects.

Cheers!

Neil.
Quote: I know it's totally unrelated to Dan's question, but...

Quote: If I've edited and produced something in another "third-party" software, and imported that work directly into PD14 Ultra, before dragging the item into the timeline, I quickly advance to the end in the preview window, to find that a large portion of the clip is lost.

Neil - that shouldn't be happening! surprised You should start a new thread and get to the bottom of that.

Cheers - Tony

Hi, Tony

Yeah, It is happening but I can get around it. The trick is to pull any so-affected video edited and produced in any third-party(non-Cyberlink) software, into Power Director 8 Ultra, rerender same(under slightly altered filename), then bring that file into PD14 Ultra, I then check the end and find it to be "all there"(which is more than I can say for myself, sometimes! ha-ha). Problem solved!

Anyway, the comment related to Richmond Dan's thread as I highlighted a reason why I would hang on to an earlier version of Power Director and have it live happily alongside PD14 Ultra.

Cheers! And all the best for the Festive Season!

Neil.

P.S. I should point out that sometimes I can pull content edited and produced in another software programme directly to PD14 Ultra and it will be intact, it just depends on which software I used for the basic edit because, as well as doing some editing/producing in PD14, I'm also using PD14 to add some "finishing touches" to clips edited elsewhere.
