Capturing from camcorder//Solved

I did some early Christmas pics/videos with my camcorder and wanted to work with them in PD 14. However, when I click on Capture, the links to DV or HDV camcorder are greyed-out (atch 1).

Atch 2 shows what is in Preferences/Capture.

Can anyone give me an insight to how I might do that instead of importing to my pic/video folders then to PD14?

I'm using an older model JVC GZ-MG670BU with an 80GB hard drive which does photos as JPG (832 x 624) and videos as 720 x 480 MOVxx.MOD. I connect the camcorder to my computer via USB.

Since the camera does not actually take high definition video, maybe these should NOT be available for you to select?!?!

In the Capture 2.png - did you try selecting the icon to the right of the 'blued' one? The icon with the red dot - did yo try that one? Did you try the icon that is - I think for - a web-cam?

Are you wanting to transfer the video you've taken with this camera or are you trying to capture video and have it go (somehow) directly into PD?

I'm sure I'm not quite understanding what you are trying to do so, please set me straight.

Thanks CS for your response.
What is considered high def? I was under the impression that 720 x 480 was considered HD.
What I was wanting to do is import the videos, not necessarily the photos, directly from my HD camcorder into PD. If that is not possible, no problem as I can do that from my video folder. I just thought it would be nice to eliminate one step in the process of importing/editing and producing the videos in my camcorder.
As for selecting the icons, I tried them all and nothing recognizes my camcorder which is connected to my computer via USB.

By the way, the attachment shows what camera I have.

'My Camera'.PNG says the camera is capable of 1920x108/60P .... but you state, in the first inquiry, that you are
"I'm using an older model JVC GZ-MG670BU with an 80GB hard drive which does photos as JPG (832 x 624) and videos as 720 x 480 MOVxx.MOD. I connect the camcorder to my computer via USB."

.... you are getting video off of this camera at 720x480. THAT is NOT high definition - I don't THINK!

I thought a minimum XXXX x 1080p ... was high def.

So you want to go direct from the camera to PD. Hmmm... well usually people take the video clips and still images off the camera and saving them on their computer somewhere, and THEN start selecting them to go into projects that they want to edit.

You want to just hook up your camera and pull stuff right off it and plop them into a PD project timeline?? Is this right?

If so, you got to get your computer to recognize your camera... does it do this when you hook up your camera to the computer?

CS

Again, thanks for input.
On my post, when I indicated 720X480, that is what I took off the properties of the clips. If you look @ my attachment, it says the camcorder has 1920X1080/60P output. According what I saw when I researched "what is high definition?" it said cameras with 720X480 capabilities do output high definition. That's why I was wondering.
When I connect my camcorder to the computer, it gives me a window to import any new pics/videos on it. I have the option of doing that or just going to Start, Computer, C: and clicking on JVC and open files.
But, I think we are like a dog chasing his tail. We don't seem to be getting anyplace. I've never tried to capture from my camera before and thought I'd try it and see what happens. Not sure why I can't so I will go back to what I've always done - import to my photo/video folders and import to PD from them. I know that works and at my age I'm not really ready for more frustrations. Got enough already. I will either delete this post (if possible) or just mark it Solved. Thanks for your time and assistance.
I wish you and your family a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Jack

If your camera is tape, you capture.
If your camera is Hard-drive, you...
Attach camera to computer.
Power on the camera.
Browse to the camera as if it were just another usb drive.
Open the camera folders and you should see a few more folders, some of which will have your photos and others will have the video.
CAPTURE is only for tape (mostly).

Thanks Barry. Your post answers my question why I couldn't capture from my camera. It in fact is a hard-drive camera. I searched the forums on this found but nothing.
Got it. I do that to import to my folders, then to PD.

Thanks CS2014. No apology is necessary and you didn't sound terse. I wasn't too sure what I said was understandable. Usually the way with my posts, but, as always, someone jumps in and "sets me straight".
I am so thankful for the patience all of the "gurus" have with me and my posts. I don't have a "thread" of knowledge that they do. I started too late in life (I just turned 75), so I have to rely on them to help me. I have learned a ton since I purchased my 1st PD and must have made 1000 posts, most of which could have been answered if I had done some research. That's what I do now and if I can't find the answer, I will make a post in these forums.
I thank you for your time and help. Wishing you and yours, as well as all the contributors, a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year. Jack

...Ah... no worries boon! I feel very much the same as far as just being in here with all these very talented people like Jeff (JL_JL), optodata, Dafydd( I think it's David.. in some sort of language...), Tony (ynotfish), BarrytheCrab, (and many I've forgotten to mention.. thanks)etc.....

These guys are something else! Soooo.. knowledgeable... so I try to keep reading but probably only understand about 10% if I'm lucky! lol

So my only hope is that I'm not 'clogging up' and wasting anyone's time with my responses! But I like the idea of trying to help others as I've been helped so generously by the people I've mentioned and more.

Merry Christmas Boong!

CS

Hey CS. Thanks for the info. My sentiments exactly but I don't have the expertise to even think of making a positive contribution. Working on it.
One other thing. At the bottom of your posts is info on your PD, and computer info. How do you get that info on your page? I looked @ my profile and I don't see anywhere to add that info.
Appreciate a heads-up.

Hey Jack,

When you select your profile look under Forum Index, then General Information about Yourself.... then Signature - that's where I put this information about my computer set-up and build and such.

Does help to sort of have that stated with each post as I can pretty much ask for help and that info is stated already!

Have a good one Jack -

And Happy New Year!

Hey, Boongsong! How's it goin'?

Barry The Crab has neatly sown up the answer! It's exactly as I would've said(something there about great minds... ay?) I have three different SD Card-based camera, used to have the software for two of them(Panasonics, SDR-S7 and SDR-S71) but misplaced the installation discs some time back, now I find, through experience I never even needed them to begin with. Hooking the cameras up to my computer via USB(the third camera, by the way, is a Canon "Legria" HF R506), then opening the content via the "Import Media Files" does the trick, no problems, alternately, the SD card can be inserted to a card reader and the camer doesn't need to connected at all! Though for your vintage device, you will have to hook up via USB. Those older cameras, like yours, used to have a facility whereby you could "copy" the camera's hard-drive content to an on-board(on the camera, that is) DVD drive that accepted the smaller diameter discs, usually DVD-R or DVD-RW, though some models may have used DVD+R or DVD+RW discs, Was yours like this? If so, though it's an extra step, you could "burn" your camera's HDD content to a disc(finalising in the camera) then use that disc in your computer's DVD drive and import the content that way. A friend of mine has such a camera, it also uses an SD card, but only for stills.

Cheers!

Neil.

Hi Neil. Thanks for your input.
You are right, Barry is just one of many who seem to always have the answer. That's why I like to peruse the various posts and see what the problems are and the solutions.
As for my camera, it also has a slot for a Micro SD HC card. However, I've never used it. Didn't seem necessary with an 80GB hard drive. I've done the same as you - use the USB connection. There is a weird twist with mine. The camera came with it's own software called Everio Media Browser. The camera does not record the clips in sequence. Videos are recorded under random programs and each clip is assigned a specific extension within those programs and only the browser can decipher them into the specific sequence taken. It is very complicated and if I don't want to use that software, I then have to open the files, arrange them by date and then renumber them so they are in sequence by date and time. Rather hard to explain - you have to actually see it to try and understand it. If anyone is interested, I can provide some snapshots of how the camera stores the photos/videos and the various segments. Photos are more logical as they are assigned numbers chronologically. Videos are not.
My camera does not have the capability to burn the HDD to a disc/card with out connecting it to my computer.
Anyway, I'm grateful for the various interactions that I'm privileged to experience in these forums. A wealth of knowledge here.
Thanks and Merry Christmas.

My Canons all come with software I totally ignore, however, your "system" seems like you MUST use the software, bit of annoyance perhaps but at least you now know CAPTURE is not for your needs. I only use CAPTURE for my HV30 (when I'm going old school), and VHS conversions.

Thanks Barry.
So true what you say. If I use the software to decode the camera's system, it will allow me to burn all videos to disc. However, I don't like the end product so I just labor by renaming each clip so they are in the sequence taken. Takes me a long time, but, that way I can import them into PD to make my videos. I can import them directly from the camera but too many clips have duplicate file exts and D can't decipher them.
Keep up the good work. Enjoy the back n forth.

Hi, Boongsong!

Yep! Been there - done that! It can be a bugger of a job! Hook the camera via USB to computer(or, in my case, if I choose, pull out the SD card and insert it to a card reader), create a folder to store the contents, copy the contents to that folder, then you're presented with this wierd numbering system that you've simply got to go through each "clip", click on "properties"(right-click on mouse), note down the date and time the clip was shot, then renumber the clips to fit in to the chronological order......UGH! I've had to do this several times, either with my own stuff or some stuff a friend has shot, that I edit for him. It's a chore, all right! But in the end the clips are put in proper order, then comes the editing and that's where the REAL fun is!

I'm writing this at a little after 1.00pm on Boxing Day while you, up there in the USA, Britain and elsewhere are coming to the end of Xmas Day, or are early Boxing Day morning. Hope you had a great day and got plenty of good video to remember it! As for me, it leaves only one more thing to say, and that's: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Cheers!

Neil.

Thanks Neil. BTW - if you choose, my real name is Jack. Boongsong is a nickname I received during my 3 tours in Thailand during the Vietnam war.
You are so right on the renumbering. But, as much as it is a "pain-in-the-butt", being retired with nothing but time, it definitely kept me busy. My last trip to Laos had 6 1/2 hrs of video (over 1400 clips). But it was worth it as I used PD13 to do my editing and ended-up with 4 DL discs of great video. Was there during the Asian New Year where water is the "game". If you don't want to get wet, stay home. And, you are right - in the end is where the REAL fun is. Well worth it and an inner satisfaction of something really difficult accomplished. The only other time I had that feeling was when I started driving the big trucks - 70+ feet long, 80,000 lbs. Never believed I could do it but was successful. Started when I was around 60 yrs old.
It is now 6:25 P.M. Pacific, around 1:30 P.M. Saturday your time (I'm guessing). BTW - I have a cousin that lives in Adelaide.
Right back at you = Happy New Year and hoping it is better than the old one. Really enjoy the conversation.

Hi, Jack!

(Oops, gotta be careful there, don't want to be yelling that out at an airport, ay? ha-ha) Interested that use DL discs. Are you able to play those you've made on a domestic DVD player? My own experience tells me it's a no-no! I've burned content to a dual-layer(DVD-9) disc, complete with menu, as you might do, upon completion, loaded the disc into a domestic player.... Nothing! The player just didn't want to know about it! Where such a player will happily cope with commercially-made DL discs(I have the complete Harry Potter series which are all on DL discs), the self-same player will "spit the dummy"(Aussie vernacular = throw a tantrum) if you try to play a home-burn DL disc on it. Thus I use DL discs only for storage purposes. Once bitten, twice shy, ay!

By the way, time-wise you were quite accurate, I only got to your post about half-an-hour after you posted it, and you must've logged out shortly after putting it up on the forum.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Hey Neil. Yeah, be careful of the high-jack. I say that to others that I know and meet. They get a puzzled look on their face until I say it completely.
Yes, I logged-off right after my post as the wife "moved-in" for her turn on Face Book.
As for the DVD-DL. What I use is Verbatim DVD+R DL with a matte finish so I can burn labels directly on the disc. Stopped using paper labels a few years back.
As for the playback, we have 2 DVD/CD players in the house. 1 is an older Sony (at lest 15 years old) that occasionally will stop playing and freeze. I guess I need to get a cleaner disc and see if that will stop it. The other is a Toshiba DVD/CD player and recorder. I have no problems playing DL discs on either one. In my vehicle, I have a CD/DVD player with 8" screen and no problem playing DL discs there. Really nice when your just sitting waiting for whatever, throw a DVD in and watch the video. Have a screen in the back also. Also, when we went to Laos for my mother-in-law's funeral, we had a professional videographer and he recorded 2 DVD DL discs (PAL) and they play perfectly also. Not sure what player you have, but I don't see why you can't play them on it.
Well, here it is, 7:43 P.M., PST (about 2:44 P.M. Sunday your time), and it is time for me to sign-off and turn it over to the wife.
Hey, do you suppose it might be a good idea to do our "chit-chats" via personal messages rather than these forums? Just wondering whether CL might be displeased.
That being said, Back At You - Cheers and a Very Happy New Year. Hopefully it will be better than 2015.
Jack
