Regarding Upgrade from PD12 to PD14

I just upgraded today. I noticed that the first step in the automated process was the un-installation of PD12. When I look at my list of installed programs, however, I notice that the PD12 "Content Pack Essential" and "Content Pack Premium" are still installed. In addition, PD14 installed an additional Content Pack Essential and a Content Pack Premium 1, which are not the same size as the PD12 files.

Are these additive, in the sense that by having 4 files, I have more content than if I just had the two latest PD14 files? Or should the installation process have automatically un-installed the PD12 files? Regards,
Dan

Hi, Richmond Dan!

Automatic uninstallation of PD12? I have PD8 Ultra installed on my computer and when I installed PD14 Ultra last month, I went through pretty-much the same routine as you but PD14 left PD8 alone to happily co-exist on my computer! When I started the process of installing PD14 Ultra, I fully expected the usual(or words to the effect of) "You have an earlier version of Power Director installed, do you wish to uninstall...?" as I did when I went from PD7 Delux to PD8 Ultra. If I clicked on "No" when installing PD8, the process stopped there and then and left me still with PD7. But with the installation of PD14, PD8 was "left in peace" and the two versions of Power Director exist side-by-side(not quite kissing and cuddling, but.... ha-ha!). And I've found that having the two versions has proved useful. For instance, If I've edited and produced something in another "third-party" software, and imported that work directly into PD14 Ultra, before dragging the item into the timeline, I quickly advance to the end in the preview window, to find that a large portion of the clip is lost. But if I pull that same clip to PD8, I find the clip is complete and intact, so I'll rerender it in PD8, then I'll pull that rerendered clip across to PD14 to do the final touches I had originally intended, so PD8 still has a valuable role to play on my computer.

Cheers!

Neil.

Hi Dan

If PD12 was automatically uninstalled, it means that you bought the upgrade version of PD14. A full license would have allowed you to install both programs, but would have been more expensive.

All installed versions of PD can access all existing content packs, so the upgrade license for PD14 only limits your choice of editing programs, not any of the content from pervious versions, so you can now use content from all 4 packs.

Thanks to both of you for your time. I was worried when I read your response Neil, that I had messed up on the installation process. But optodata is correct, I went with the upgrade version, which was surprisingly inexpensive, considering that I went from PD12 to PD14 and also got Photo Director, all for $80 including the backup disk. Happy camper, so far. Regards,
Dan

I also noted that the email containing links to the downloads provided 9 files, whereas the installation instructions said there are 7 files. I note that the adorage and vitascene files are provided both in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If I'm running 64-bit Windows, is there any reason to download and install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions? Regards,
Dan

No. The 64-bit versions are the only ones you need.

I know it's totally unrelated to Dan's question, but...

Quote: If I've edited and produced something in another "third-party" software, and imported that work directly into PD14 Ultra, before dragging the item into the timeline, I quickly advance to the end in the preview window, to find that a large portion of the clip is lost.

Neil - that shouldn't be happening! surprised You should start a new thread and get to the bottom of that.

Hi, Tony

Yeah, It is happening but I can get around it. The trick is to pull any so-affected video edited and produced in any third-party(non-Cyberlink) software, into Power Director 8 Ultra, rerender same(under slightly altered filename), then bring that file into PD14 Ultra, I then check the end and find it to be "all there"(which is more than I can say for myself, sometimes! ha-ha). Problem solved!

Anyway, the comment related to Richmond Dan's thread as I highlighted a reason why I would hang on to an earlier version of Power Director and have it live happily alongside PD14 Ultra.

Cheers! And all the best for the Festive Season!

Neil.

P.S. I should point out that sometimes I can pull content edited and produced in another software programme directly to PD14 Ultra and it will be intact, it just depends on which software I used for the basic edit because, as well as doing some editing/producing in PD14, I'm also using PD14 to add some "finishing touches" to clips edited elsewhere.
