Quote: Don't bother. I just bought the #1 in a different post. Capture is limited in to PD defaults of mpeg-1, mpeg-2, and avi at sd resolutions only. Mp4 captures are are available with the supplied software.

Thanks for the info Tomasc! I had the installation disc for the bare-bones version sitting in a box with other software discs, and just thought there might've been some use for it. Thing is, the content capture would not be via capture card, but straight off an SD-card(content copy-pasted to a folder on the computer for editing later). The camera is a Canon Legria HF R506 that shoots and saves in MP4 or AVCHD(I've chosen MP4). Does that change things?

Cheers!

Hi, Maliek!

How's everything?

The poster, with the older Sony DV-Tape-based camera, innuganti, wonder how he got on converting his camera tapes, that might be a subject for a future tutorial..."Capturing and Editing from Analogue Video Sources".Even though there's a proliferation of digital video-cameras on the market, there are a few out there still relying on older analogue system cameras to shoot their home movies, or, they have a backlog of old tapes they want to "rescue" before they deteriorate, be they VHS(and its off-shoot, VHS-C), Beta, the (now-obscure) Video-2000 system, Video-8/Hi-8, Mini-DV and any other format you could think of. Capture card devices were marketed for just such a purpose. A tutorial could cover aspect ratio conversion from 4:3 to 16:9 with CLPV(a feature I've been putting to very good use of late) and touching up a clip with "Fix/Enhance".

Cheers!

Some time back, I bought a new capture device for VHS-to-DVD conversion. In the package with the device was an OEM(bare-bones) version of PD8. I just now had the idea, that, should I acquire a laptop computer at some future time, were I to install this OEM version of PD8 to this laptop for the purpose of "quick assemble edits" on the run, with the OEM version accept MP4 video? If not, I won't bother.

Cheers!

Yep, I have had the same. The problem is known to CyberLink.

Hi, Dafydd B!

Sure can be annoying, can't it?

Hello all!

Chuckpuckett's and Gerald W.'s situations are both similar in that they are having great difficulty getting PD14 to author(burn) a disc. Surely each could get an answer through this thread.

Cheers!

(I see I've gained promotion to Senior Contributor... taken me a while but I got there in the end!)
Quote: As PepsiMan says we're just ordinary users trying to help each other out. We're not Cyberlink Support. Over the years there have been numerous problems caused by video drivers. NVidia appear to be particularly problematical as they are constantly releasing changes aimed at gamers that cause issues with Power Director. Cyberlink, as a third-party software supplier, is therefore constantly engaged in a game of catch-up.

It's been the same with Windows 10. As users upgraded to that a fresh set of problems arose that have needed to be worked through. You can't blame providers like Cyberlink if others move the goalposts.

If you want to get your set-up working you should either contact Cyberlink Support or accept the advice freely given on this forum.

Hi, Fenman(Mike)!

Well stated!

Cheers!

Neil.

Heck! I've just noticed I got a promotion! I've been bumped up to "Senior Contributor"...Woo-hoo!
Quote: Smartfit does not remove content, it lowers the bitrate until your project fits on the selected disc. This can degrade the final output appearance, it's up to the viewer to decide if the result is acceptable.

I suggest Gerald start a new thread so we can focus on what may be a totally different problem even if it is similar on the surface.

Hello, Barry!

Okay, you've cleared up my misconception of "Smart Fit", but it still leaves the extremely limited option of either DVD-HQ or Smart-Fit when authoring a DVD containing 16:9 a.r. wide-screen videos, giving the DVD-SP option only for 4:3 aspect ratio videos. This limits PD14's use, in my view. It's just as well I kept PD8 installed then.

Hi,

I got a notice that an answer to my post on this thread has received a reply, I click on the link, and I see that it is MY OWN post! I've asked this a few times before, but I'll ask again, WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON, HERE? I should only be notified if someone else replies to a post I make. Has anyone else had this experience?

Cheers!

Hi everybody!

For me, I have my transitions preset to 5 seconds. I had(in Preferences) set the transitions to insert as "cross", as opposed to "overlap", but, to my dismay, I found that I had to manually insert the audio component of each transition..... not a good thing when you're trying to cut down the amount of work required in editing a video. I had to reset the transition behaviour back to "overlap" in preferences to get the automatic insertion of the audio component of the transition..... so much for cutting down the work-load!

This is one that I definitely class as a "design fault". Whether overlap or cross, transitions should insert COMPLETE with the audio component! They should NOT need to be inserted separately!

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, Gerald W.!

In light of what you're experiencing, perhaps a complete uninstall, run defrag(could help!) then re-install. However I should point out that PD14 does not offer DVD authoring at DVD-SP quality unless the content is 4:3 aspect ratio. For anything shot digitally(or sourced from digital TV broadcast) in 16:9 aspect ratio, your only options for burning(authoring) are DVD-HQ or "Smart-Fit". I'm somewhat wary of the latter option as it implies that some of the content may be automatically deleted in the authoring process. For this reason, I've kept PD8 installed on my computer as that version still provides authoring at DVD-SP(which has the side-benefitof allowing up to 2 hours, 25 minutes of content on a 4.7GB disc.)

Shouldn't you be communicating this directly to Cyberlink, rather than posting them on a user-to-user forum? Kind of like peeing in a navy blue suit: gives you a warm feeling, but nobody much notices.

Hi, Dan!

I'd expect someone at Cyberlink would be reading the posts in these forums, otherwise, why bother with the "Suggestions For PD15" thread?

Hi, Tony!

I'm not saying there's any conspiracy going on here, it's just that with some of these features, people who attempt to use them are experiencing problems of uncooperative features, that's why I referred to them as design faults. Some features are new, some have been around from several versions back through Power Director's history. Some of these features are easy to use, some may, or will cause problems. It's where they're causing problems that I deem them to be "design faults". the phrase is intended to nudge Cyberlink into straightening them out and make them easier to use and work with.

Cheers!

A question, for both chuckpuckett and Gerald W., if I may.

What type of file are you attempting to burn to DVD? It could be the file type that is causing the problem. Generally, DVD's are burned from MPEG2 video as a complete presentation, with menu(and first-play intro, if you've a mind to create one and add it to your disc). Other types of file, like AVI, AVCHD(depending on file size), MP4 are really only best stored on a DVD as a data file, much like you'd save a Word or Publisher document. They will play on a DVD player, provided the disc has been "closed"(finalised)but there's no menu, as such and the contents will appear on screen listed alphabetically rather than in the order you put them on the disc. If you want high image quality and are prepared to sacrifice DVD capacity(at DVD-SP burning quality, a disc can hold up to 2 hours, 25 minutes of content) then burn your videos as MPEG2 at DVD-HQ. Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hello, Luthientinuviel!

I'm just wondering if you're trying to add "captions" describing something on-screen, for which, the "titles" function is your best bet.

If, however, you're translating a spoken language(perhaps French or German[Franzoesich oder Deutsch]) and want to give an English translation, but only when called up by the DVD player's subtitle facility, then it appears this may be something else Cyberlink needs to sort out. By rights, you should be able to insert as many subtitles as required, and have them appear as long as required when called up on a DVD(or Blu-Ray) player's subtitle function. Many of Cyberlink's so-called "innovations" are turning out to be design faults instead. This is just one more to add to the list!

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi, Mike!

I had the Pinnacle "Dazzle" capture device and the only time I've had problems is while trying to copy some older VHS tapes, I copped the "Copyright Protected - Recording Is Prohibited" warning which was due to the condition of the tape(dirty, likely fouling the heads of the VHS deck), so it wasn't the device's fault. I've still got it, actually. The one that gave me problems was the first one I had. I forget the brand but I think it came with a package that included PD5. This one captured the video okay but the audio captured through it sounded attrocious! So much so that I had to feed the audio via the line-in on my computer to the computer's sound card, as it was, it wasn't the best fix as I had some audio drop-outs feeding the audio that way. The next device I bought was the Dazzle, it cured the audio problem and gave me good sound without the drop-outs. The K-World device is my third, thus far no problems with it.

Hi, John!

My first "port of call" was the "suggestions for PD15" thread, and I note you've made a comment there, you've beaten me to it! The transitions issue really needs a closer look. Cyberlink has added the facility of applying the transitions in a "crossfade" behaviour, as well as the usual overlap. All well and good, exept for the freezing at the beginning and end of the transition, and, if you set the transitions to automatically go to "cross" in preferences, the audio component "goes missing" and has to be added separately. This is NOT innovation, this is DESIGN FAULT! It needs fixing urgently!

Cheers!

Neil.
Quote: Please fix the "Cross" Transitions, particularly on the commonly used Fade, so we don't get the freeze at the beginning and end of a transition. This freeze is very noticable and quite annoying. Apparently the problem is not universal, it only seems to affect fades, wipes, threshold and a few others.

Hey, John!

You've beaten me to this! I was going to suggest this as well. Also, when the "cross" behaviour is selected, the audio component is automatically attached! And another one I tried earlier while doing some editing work, was the "Water Droplets" effect, modified it to my specs, went to save and PD14 "crashed". Not good, Cyberlink! Not good at all!

Cheers!

Quote: Hey guys:

I basically understand YouTube want to cover their ei double es to prevent facing copyright claims or lawsuits. They also quite naturally make their life easy by using their technological capabilities of automated music title detection, not unlike Shazam on Android, for example.

I have filed a dispute against a YouTube copyright infringement claim two or three times successfully when the music was old work (classical music) produced using Linux MultiMedia Studio (available for Windows as well) from a midi file.

I also have some videos that 'include copyrighted content' while my understanding is that, depending on some criteria, some such videos may not be accessible in certain countries or YouTube may put ads in them with no income from them for me. In some of such videos the music was indeed just played publicly at an event I recorded.

What hasn't actually worked for me very well is using free music from different online sources. It gets flagged anyway, sooner or later. Unless I am perfectly confident I can dispute such a copywright infringement claim, I won't try to.

I am just trying to say I don't think this approach by YouTube is likely to change towards more liberal. You need to consider what music, if any at all, to put in your videos. YouTube is actually a good lesson in this respect. I am really careful about using music in my videos regardless of whether I want to put them on YouTube or anywhere else…

Hi, all!

This is a second attempt at replying to this post, the last attempt took too long to save, and the save failed. Jirka has summed this situation up very neatly in his post. Though he has successfully fought off claims made against him, YouTube are going to continue "flagging" people, whether they use commercial music, "Smartsound-sourced" music or even Eric Matyas's free music. It's going to cause headaches all round. Probably the trick is: make two versions of a video, one with music for showing to family/friends, one without music for upload to YouTube.

Cheers!

Hi, Tobari2!

Your remark, "The reviews on the K-World's wasen't too good" doesn't mesh with my experience of the product. I've had no problem with this product, it has done its job quite satisfactorally for me. You shouldn't put too much store by what some reviewers may say about a product like this(or any kind of product, for that matter), the reviewer may be unduly biased against the product for any reason or for no reason at all. What you had there, 3 RCA phone jacks on one end and a USB plug on the other end, cord only, isn't a device at all! It's just a "bodgeyed-up" cable made by a confidence trickster to scam people out of money with a "dud" product, and, sadly, you've fallen victim to the scam. Best thing to do is put that sad experience behind you and take yourself off to a reputable electronics store and see what's available there. You can ask the store owner's advice, but be wary if he/she tries to push one product in preference to another, such store owners really should be neutral in this regard, not favouring any specific product.

Cheers!

Neil.
Hi all!

Maybe this one could be put in the "suggestions For PD15" bag, do something about fixing the "cross" transitions so we don't get the freeze at the beginning and end of a transition. I should note though, the problem is not universal, it only seems to affect fades, wipes, threshold and a few others. Still, it's something Cyberlink needs to work on.

Cheers!

Neil.
