Thanks for the reply SoNic67
I got it working after disconnecting the 8bit monitor from the signal splitter so that only the Vizio P TV was connected. In addition the HDR box on the Nvidea display software had to be turned on. After that the downloaded 4K HDRG10 played fine in HDR but only with the VLC video player, may have to update all the other players. The downloaded HDR software was 30Hz, the 4K HDMI stream to the TV was at 30Hz 12 bits. Most likely will be 10 bits at 60Hz. So far that is the only true HDR video that works, all others while claiming to be HDR are not.
Playback is fine as a file as well as from the burned UHD disc.
So far the TV set is indicating HDR even when playing non HDR material,no good. more work

I have been downloading 4K HDR samples from the likes of Samsung and Sony. These have the BT2020 color space and show 4K HDR10 10 bits when played from a Samsung UHD BR player after I create a uhd disc with that material. That same disc when played from my pc or as the original file shows no HDR properties on to the TV and it is surprising to see the magnitude of the picture difference.. According to Nvidea the GTX 1060 is supposed to handle HDR, what am I doing wrong here? (again)
Tried 3 different video players.
Thanks for any help
Eugene
After some more fiddling , it may be the bit rate from the pc at 8 rather than 10 bits?

A GTX1060 is quite underpowered for 4K 10-Bit workflow... Have you actually tried editing that type of media on your PC?
Most camcorders who are doing 10-Bit are higher cost Mirrorless or DSLRs, and Cinema Cameras (GH4/5, BMPCC, etc.). They are recording to ProRes, DNxHR, or HEVC - two of those arne't supported in PDR, and likely not to be in the near future, as there are licensing costs and tend to be looked upon as "Pro" features - a market CyberLink likes to mention, but has never really truly targeted.
You also cannot grade and correct 10-bit media on 8-bit desktop displays (unless you're rendering out to Rec. 709, anyways), or televisions with all manner of after market enhancements enabled on them (as this tends to look awful when someone plays the footage on a different device).
Well it looks like it will be a while before I get there. The 1060 works well in converting UHD 8bit to UHD 10bit that I need and does it in near real time. Editing on PD14 in 4K is fast and very stable but no 10bit editing yet, PD14 is all I have now.
Thanks for your email and reply.
Steep learning curve again.

I have PD 14 but slowly converting from 8 bit to 10 bit, an other recently filled link was a 75" 10 bit TV. PC handles 4K/60 4:4:4 10 bit, GTX1060, can any of the PD versions handle 10 bit? UHD BR recorder + player handles 10 bit HDR too.
Major link missing is a 10 bit camcorder.
Any other affordable 10 bit editors ?, use private messenger to answer that please.
Thanks

I always like to record in the best setting my cameras offer, especially if it's stuff I plan to keep, family, friends, .... so on. Can't ever go back and capture again, software and playback will usually catch up eventually. Who knows, 10 bit produce might even be supported in PD17 when released within a few weeks most likely.
As mentioned, I'd always record at the best the camera has to offer. Down sampling during video production of high quality source video usually results in better quality than recording at the same levels. Between H.264 and H.265, the bitrate reduction is really unique to each individual on what their eyes sees as the same quality. It also depends on playback equipment and type of video content too. Often that break point for most is about 60% of the bitrate. This thread and a few users perspectives of quality might be of interest https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/40564.page#post_box_209419
100Mbps H.264 will be the same files size as 100Mbps H.265, the difference will be the user perceived playback quality.

That was interesting reading down memory lane Jeff.
Could not find any HEVC material then. Now I burn all to HEVC10 bit at 60Mb on UHD BR.. Unfortunately my original material is still 8 bit, the AX100 is still hard to beat. That UHD CREATOR burnig software came just in time.

Thank you Jeff, for your as always detailed inputs.
I just want to mention a very specific application.
If some nut like myself wants to create UHD Blu Rays using UHD CREATOR, (Google it) then the use of a GPU like the GTX1060 would be strongly advised .
The UHD CREATOR software converts my PD14 4K edited input video from 8 bit to 10 bit and using a GPU like my previous GTX960 would take about 20 min for ea minute of video while the GTX1060 will do it in a lot less than 2. All the heavy lifting was done by the CPU not the GTX960 GPU.
Happy 4TH!

Joycelyn,
I obviously must be missing something. Why not just re-encode from UHD to HD instead of cropping.?
And if the video is created in HD then maintaining that format will always be your best quality. Re-encoding to 4K will degrade the PQ because the resolution is still only HD but encoding noise and artifacts have now been added.
What do I not see?

With my details listed below it would take less than 2x real time, assuming there is no color correction or similar. That would also be the case with my previous GPU, a GTX960.
Try downloading NVidea,s older drivers.
Check GPU and CPU % usage.

Hello Phil
You live in a very pleasant city, my brother lives there, so my wife and I had the pleasure of exploring Melbourne and surrounding area a number of times. And viewing the Southern Cross, wow.
I found out about the AVCHD AFTER buying the Samsung but it is not a major deal because we mostly use a $45 Seiki player that does a good upscaling job to 4K and is region free, since we have many German videos. So the Samsung is only used for UHD.
Sorry about the higher prices. Many years ago I would buy PAL/NTSC VHS recorders as well as PAL/NTSC TV sets in one of your department stores because THAT stuff was more expensive here, if one could find it.
It always aroused suspicion from the customs people, why would anyone in his right mind buy a TV set in Australia and I came close to having everything being taken apart. But they usually cooled down after the PAL/NTSC explanation with my German accent being additional proof.
Looking forward to your " UHD BR can do" report.
I too dislike the inability to copy and paste !!

I replaced that drive by cloning it to a larger drive. Still use it as a backup clone that I renew every 3 month or so. In addition to regular backups, my 4 PC drives all are cloned as well.
Cloning and backing up has saved my hide many times. On the PCs all drives are plug in using inexpensive cages, it only takes the time to shut down and boot again to replace a drive.
Recently I picked up a virus with phone numbers to call etc, so the drive was replaced with a 4 day old clone but to my surprise the clone had that virus too, it just layed dormand while I made backups. Luckily a month old back up saved the day.
For cloning and backing up I use AOMEI BACKUPPER, free software as well. And there is AOMEI PARTITION ASSISTANT free as well.

One of my PC's years ago had a 20 MB, yes megabyte, HD. Times have changed.

I checked my HDDs with CDI and found one that had over 8000 hrs on it and the legend "FAILING".
Plus all you ever want to know about your drives and then some.

Good news Phil and thanks for passing it on.
I too had the color problem you mentioned but only with the VLC PC player software. The cause may be that it is 10bits, just a guess. So far not aware of any commercial UHD player that will NOT play these BR discs.
You have a GTX960 so the rendering must have taken a lot of time. This UHD burning made me change to a GTX1060, rendering in UHD CREATOR is now app 2X real time from app 30X real time.
Phil, please mention your experience on the PD16 forum, to inform others. In particular because of your PC's specs. This thread is only on the PD15 forum and has very few readers.
One question if I may, why did you choose this particular Sony player?
Eugene
PS
I read the whole thread again and YES, WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY. !!!!!!!!

Amazon has a UHD player for $ 62 Magnafox brand, and some good choices around a $ 100. Mine is a 2 year old Samsung 8500 from Costco.
I had an email indicating that a menu will be added to UHD creator fairly soon. I bought that software for $29 over two month ago and it was a dud, after some updates now I am glad I did.

No, I have not tried PowerDVD because my motherboard and CPU are not adequate for it. My UHD DVDs play ok on VLC, Potplayer and Mediaplayer Classic 64.
UHD Creator is supposed to get a menu with the next couple of SW updates, I will mention it on this site. Since it can play different titles already, a menu should not be that difficult.
I hate to admit that there is not a great demand for UHD burning software. CL could take advantage of that by making a UHD authoring plugin that would work with different editors.

Any 4K burning software yet?
The answer is yes. Sort of, in a way, better than nothing etc.
UHD CREATOR allows the burning of my AX100 camcorder 4K material, (edited in PD14), onto a 25/50GB disc and then to be played on a regular UHD BR player.
The software is similar to TsMuxer, there is no menu, chapters are automaticallly created every 5 min and it is possible to burn more than 1 title at a time.
Any BR burner will do just fine. UHD-C converts my 8bit 4K 264 or 265 video to 10 bit, creates the proper BDM/CERTIFICATE files that I then burn onto a usually 25GB BR disc, using IMG burn or Roxy.
UHD-C conversion from 8 to 10 bit was painfully slow with a GTX960 but the addition af a GTX1060 solved that problem, conversion is app 2x real time.
Picture quality is excellent.
So that is all there is and most likely all there will ever be.

Should I have bought a more up to date GBU?
Converting 4K 8bitPD14 HEVC to 10bit HEVC, increased the PC power usage from 110 Watt to 190 Watt
CPU use was 23% GPU use was 61%
CPU use used to be 100% , GPU use used to be 2%
Next time my PC needs some work I will replace the 600W PS with a 400 Watt that is floating around here.
Eugene
Now busy burning all 4K vacation videos to UHD4K BR disc. looking great

Installed a GTX1060 6GB and BINGO! While converting PD14 UHD HEVC from 8bit to 10bit the frames per second went from 2FPS to 33 FPS. The work is now done by the GPU rather than the CPU.
Thanks for all the inputs!.
Great forum!

Thanks Pepsiman,
I am ok, my PS is 600W, I needet that for my original PC about 8 years ago. From that PC only the case is left, everything has been upgraded and they all use less power. As I type this the pc draws 105 watts, I find that amazing..CPU is a i76700
The PC uses 1 SSD and 2HD in plug in cages so they can all be replaced in about a minute, I do not like hot swap. So, then I can do crazy stuff using a clone C drive without screwing things up, just love that. I have clones of all my drives. For my 3 PCs there are over 20 drives, counting all the clones.
Again, thanks for the heads up

Nathan, the only hickups I have on my pc are with UHD 10bit videos and by tomorrow afternoon that should be history once I install the GTX1060, 6GB.
I had a PM confirming your recommendation (thanks) and anyhow it is time for an upgrade, the GTX960 served faithfully for years.
My mouth was open for a long time when I saw the dramatic reduction in rendering time of 4K HEVC material using CUDA versus a CPU. From 3 1/2 days to 3 1/2 hours!!! And no discernable difference in PQ!
Thanks for the input
Eugene

|
Thanks for the reply Nathan. My problem is with UHD Creator. The 8 bit edited material from PD14 is converted to UHD BR 10 bit in creator and the GTX960 will not provide 10 bit CUDA support .So I am told that the GTX1050 is the minimum card that can do CUDA 10 bit HEVC including HDR. A 90 min video takes close to 20 hrs to convert, this brings back memories when rendering the same video to HEVC in PD14 took 3 1/2 DAYS and was done while we were on a cruise!
So you feel that 4GB in a 1060 can handle 10 bit HEVC? I use a single 8 bit monitor or 4K TV but have trouble playing back from PC with VLC using the GTX960, while MPC64 and Potplayer are ok, but the PC takes a moment to make up its mind as to "what is this"?.
No problem playing my own created UHD 10 bit BR disc on a Samsung 8500, the disc has all the proper files just like a commercial 4K video. This may be all we will ever have to burn our own UHD BRs. The PQ is outstanding even with the conversion. And chapters every 5 minutes.
Amazon has some good deals on GPU cards so I will give this a try.
Thanks Nathan

Question to our GPU gurus.
I have some problems with 10 bit UHD HEVC 265 video that my GTX960 is unable to handle. Will tle GTX1050 do the trick and how much memory for video?
