Question to our GPU gurus.

I have some problems with 10 bit UHD HEVC 265 video that my GTX960 is unable to handle. Will tle GTX1050 do the trick and how much memory for video?

Eugene

Interesting as the GTX960 was the pick of the bunch for that generation as it is "Feature Set F" (Introduced dedicated HEVC video decoding (Main and Main 10)). 10 Series GPU (including the 1050) is "Feature Set H" (Introduced dedicated HEVC video decoding (Main12)). I've got running a 960/1060/1070 on various PC's and I've not seen issues with UHD BD playback on any of these PCs (or are you playing content from other sources?). FYI - 1060/1070 are in dedicated HTPCs hooked up to 4K HDR displays (the 960 is only my "Main PC" pushing out dual 1080p Monitors)

The new 10 series GPU are faster and I can push "better" algos in madVR, but you really do want a minimum of 4GB of ram these days in the GPU. Stronger GPU's also let you run "better" algos. I'd recoment (if your budget can support it) at least a 1060. Even in my Shuttle HTPC (with a limited PSU), you can get short, lower powered 1060.

Thanks for the reply Nathan. My problem is with UHD Creator. The 8 bit edited material from PD14 is converted to UHD BR 10 bit in creator and the GTX960 will not provide 10 bit CUDA support .So I am told that the GTX1050 is the minimum card that can do CUDA 10 bit HEVC including HDR. A 90 min video takes close to 20 hrs to convert, this brings back memories when rendering the same video to HEVC in PD14 took 3 1/2 DAYS and was done while we were on a cruise!

So you feel that 4GB in a 1060 can handle 10 bit HEVC? I use a single 8 bit monitor or 4K TV but have trouble playing back from PC with VLC using the GTX960, while MPC64 and Potplayer are ok, but the PC takes a moment to make up its mind as to "what is this"?.

No problem playing my own created UHD 10 bit BR disc on a Samsung 8500, the disc has all the proper files just like a commercial 4K video. This may be all we will ever have to burn our own UHD BRs. The PQ is outstanding even with the conversion. And chapters every 5 minutes.

Amazon has some good deals on GPU cards so I will give this a try.

Thanks Nathan

I have no issues with UHD BD HDR playback to a 4K display with both the 1060 and 1070 using JRiver Media Center (note: I'm one of their beta testers, and as of V24 they now have support for playback of both UHD BD and also BD Menu support working - I've tested 70+ discs so far).

If you want me to test playback of a particular clip let me know PD 64 Bit-Win10 64 Bit-32GB RAM-80TB HDD

hello. Eugene
gtx 1050 ti uses power from the PCIe slot but gtx 1060, 1070.... requires extra power supply dongle so ensure to have at least 500W(min is 400W) power supply...

Nathan, the only hickups I have on my pc are with UHD 10bit videos and by tomorrow afternoon that should be history once I install the GTX1060, 6GB.
I had a PM confirming your recommendation (thanks) and anyhow it is time for an upgrade, the GTX960 served faithfully for years.

My mouth was open for a long time when I saw the dramatic reduction in rendering time of 4K HEVC material using CUDA versus a CPU. From 3 1/2 days to 3 1/2 hours!!! And no discernable difference in PQ!

Thanks for the input

Thanks Pepsiman,
I am ok, my PS is 600W, I needet that for my original PC about 8 years ago. From that PC only the case is left, everything has been upgraded and they all use less power. As I type this the pc draws 105 watts, I find that amazing..CPU is a i76700

The PC uses 1 SSD and 2HD in plug in cages so they can all be replaced in about a minute, I do not like hot swap. So, then I can do crazy stuff using a clone C drive without screwing things up, just love that. I have clones of all my drives. For my 3 PCs there are over 20 drives, counting all the clones.

Again, thanks for the heads up

Installed a GTX1060 6GB and BINGO! While converting PD14 UHD HEVC from 8bit to 10bit the frames per second went from 2FPS to 33 FPS. The work is now done by the GPU rather than the CPU.

Thanks for all the inputs!.

Great forum!

Quote ...and the GTX960 will not provide 10 bit CUDA support...

None of the newest video cards use CUDA anymore for video - decoding or encoding.
Forget about that, now they have dedicated hardware inside (ASIC), totally separate from the gaming cores.

Those ASIC have different capabilities, based on their generation:

BTW for those that are interested. The GPU support matrix link make sense when you know the chipset used in the gtx series consumer video cards:
GM206 – 960, 950 support only for H.265 (HEVC) 4K YUV 4:2:0
GP104 – 1080, 1070
GP106 – 1060
GP107 – 1050
Look at the h.265, vp8, vp9 support.

Should I have bought a more up to date GBU?

Converting 4K 8bitPD14 HEVC to 10bit HEVC, increased the PC power usage from 110 Watt to 190 Watt

CPU use was 23% GPU use was 61%

CPU use used to be 100% , GPU use used to be 2%

Next time my PC needs some work I will replace the 600W PS with a 400 Watt that is floating around here.

Eugene

Now busy burning all 4K vacation videos to UHD4K BR disc. looking great
