Quote You did not say what you are using to capture the Hi8 video with mono audio. If you are using a vhs adapter then connect that single audio cable from the camcorder to the white (left channel) instead of the red (right channel) connector. Most vhs adapters will process this as mono and the same audio will appear on both channels. You could buy and use a Y adapter for the audio too but it is not necessary if you connect that audio cable correctly for mono.

Oh I see. I am using a VHS type adapter (Diamond VC500) it has the Yellow - Video and Red and White Audio RCA connections. I was using the single red RCA connection. Interesting, never heard that before. My first time using this. So using the White connection will record audio on both channels ? I'll do that from now on then. Thanks !

****UPDATE**** Just tried that and it still is only audio in one side. Thanks anyway.
I have a 8mm project I am working on and the audio is analog which is coming out of the right speaker. To make this stereo I am having to highlight the audio section by section and select Edit Audio which opens WaveEditor. I copy the right audio channel over to the left and save it to make it come out both speakers. I tried highlighting them all before opening WaveEditor but Edit Audio is greyed out if I do that.

Is there a way to make all the audio come out in stereo without having to open each section and edit it ?
Quote You could use splits to isolate that portion of the clip and the Right mouse click and choose Mute clip.

Great thank you !!
Was wondering if there was a way to either mute or overdub a section of audio without making markers on the audio and dragging them down ? It's been a while since I used this. Started making movies again. Still cannot get the transitions to stay on the timeline if I drag them down either. Ugh.
Quote
Quote Can anybody offer anything on this ? The transitions won't stay when I drag them to the area between the clips. I usually have to do it several times to get it to add, and sometimes it never adds. What is going on ?

KC

There shouldn't be sny space between clips, they should be touching. Then drag the transition oner the "joint" between the two clips.

Yea I've tried it both ways. With a little space and the clips touching, I get the same results. Thanks for the reply though. Really disappointed in this software. I'll experiment somemore. Thanks Dan.

Quote Never had this much problem before using Pinnacle. *ugh*

You are dragging the transitions to between two video clips with audio. Right? You may be trying to put the transition at the exact center like you did with pinnacle and that is wrong. You need to apply the transition between the video portion of the clips only and not on the center or audio portion between two clips.

The next time you see the no symbol then move and drag the transition up about ¼ inch until the no symbol disappears before you release the mouse button.

You may need to expand the timeline ruler so you can see the transition and where you are dropping it. There should be no gap between clips for normal transitions to work.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Apologies for the late response with the holdays and all. No I am not trying to put it "at the exact center". Never did that with the Pinnacle software either. I am trying to put it in between the video clips. Not the video and audio combined. I drag it right to the edge and release it and it disappears. With Pinnacle it leaves a icon there with the lightning bolt and it's very obvious it's there. I will try again as I am starting to edit the movies again. I will let you know if I can get it to work. I've tried your suggestions above but will try them again. Thanks

I am having problems getting transitions in my projects. I drag them down and sometimes they stay and usually don't. The transition makes a little gap and I can see the file etc. I've been trying to put transitions between the different chapters and they just won't stay. What am I doing wrong ?

Quote Your player probably has double layer DVD player capabilities if you really don't want to do any editing or lose quality. DL are not all that expensive and are usually readily available.

Don't do any compression of the recorded videos. You should be recording at the highest quality (if possible). Use longer tapes if your camcorder will handle them.

Thanks Steve !
These miniDV tapes are 60 min tapes. Must have recorded them in LP. After capturing them and importing them into the timeline, I have an hour and 38 minutes. I know I can cut the clips and make another project but that is a serious pain and if I can find another way that would be great. You can only put an hour on these DVD's I have DVD-R disks. Should I be capturing them more compressed? or should I compress them in the rendering ? I am rendering them as MPEG-2 as well.

Fixing the do some video8 capturing as well.

Thanks for the help !

Quote There is a Profile and a Settings button on the Capture page to allow the change. I see that Stevetek already answered first while I was still checking it.

I do recall that mpeg-2 captures with pinnacle and later burn to disc after editing was not as sharp as dv-avi captures to later create a dvd(mpeg-2). That was many years ago. My xp machine had a P4 3Ghz. Today I am using a I7 and times have changed. Maybe a faster machine can create mpeg-2 on the fly much better.

Different people see things differently like there was a user who insist SP and EP mpeg-2 captures look the same to him. See this link: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/47074.page . I know dv-avi gives the best quality. A newer faster computer could narrow the quality gap considerably as stevek want to point out. Only you can determine if it makes a difference to you.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks. Capturing the tapes now. I did find the settings. Still learning the software. I appreciate the help. I'm sure we'll be talking again. Thanks. I'll let you guys know how they come out.

Quote Is there a way to choose what format for video captured from a miniDV tape into PD15 Ultra? It's doing it at mpeg-2 at the moment, but I've looked around and can not fnd where I could make different selection.

I'll dig out my old miniDV camcorder if you really need me to.

On the lower right under "profile" what options do you see?

Why is mpg2 not acceptable to you? Too many video format changes will cause degradation of the video. If you will eventually want to burn the project to a DVD/AVCHD/Blu ray, Mpg2 works. AVI files are larger but MAY be better IF you are doing a lot of editing.

Oh I see it under profile. MPEG-2 is perfectly acceptable with me. I just wanted to know where the option was to change it. This is new software to me and I am learning it. Thanks I appreciate the help. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

I have several miniDV movies from years ago. Just had to purchase a Sony DCR-HC62 to start making these. I am a bit rusty. I have many didgital8 tapes to capture as well. Those will go slower because have to use a USB 2.0 connection which is the interface. The Sony is using a Firewire connection. This is a Windows 10 64bit system, i7, 16GB DDR4, with SSD and SATA drives as well. It has a GTX980 NVidia video card.

Quote I am using the Sony software and it's importing the video from the Handycam fine with a preview window.

Close the sony play memories home software. Open the PD15 and in the capture tab click on the white DV camcorder icon in the upper left and it should then turn blue and be active.

Thanks I appreciate it. Just learning this software. Had some Pinnacle software years ago but haven't used it in a while, Getting back into copying all our home movies. Thanks again.
I can hear the audio but there's no video. I thought when I clicked the Record it would open a preview window but it doesn't. Not even sure it's capturing the video. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

UPDATE

I have purchased a Sony Handycam DCR - HC62. On the Sony product site it shows this model as being Windows 10 64-bit compatible. It's on its way here and should hopefully get here before Christmas. I guess we will see how it works. If it doesn't work with my Windows 10 system, I will use it on my Windows XP system. Thanks again for the help. Will let you all know how it goes.
Quote Hi,

Used to have access to a HandyCam years ago. The i-link (firewire) port on many camcorders was always sensitive and often a source of trouble.

Just had a quick read of the manual here :

https://docs.sony.com/release//DCRHC20guide.pdf

and the camcorder also has a USB port that may help out, althought the Sony support says USB streaming not supported after XP so you might have to stick with your XP system to grab the files if the usb port is functioning??

Cheers

Adrian

Yes I believe I will have to use a WinXP system to get the video from the miniDV tapes. What happened originally is it lost the ablility to record. There was a recall on the HC20 models due to the recording chip going bad inside. MIne happened years after the recall and Sony would not replace it. I could use the playback though until yesterday. I may have fried the playback chip. It doesn't recognize either USB or the Firewire connectivity. I will have to buy a camcorder off of ebay or something. Thanks for the help. I saved the PDF in your link.
Quote More than likely you need to get the MiniDV camcorder fixed or say buy a refurbished one to continue the transfer.

One thing I’ve found is that replacing the firewire cable can help or cleaning the small end of that connector with say wd-40 to remove the corrosion and blot it dry with a towel and retry the connection. You already knew not to connect it hot on the small end right… That could destroy the chip inside of it.

The chipset inside the firewire 400 card is important. Let us know what brand and model number it is.

Thanks and no I did not know about connecting it while it's hot on the small end. I believe that's what happened. Of course you live and learn. I did put a PCI-e Firewire card in my Win10 system which was of no use at all. I will have to get a refurbished HandyCam and I am going to rebuild my XP system and just copy them that way. I have a Firewire capture card that came with Pinnacle software. It did work fine until I fried the camcorder chip that was allowing playback. Thanks again for your help and the heads up. I really appreciate it.
I have a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC20 and it takes a firewire connection to import the movies. A Firewire card has been added to my ASUS system and I see it in Device Manager. When I plug in the cam corder I see nothing. This system is a Win10 64bit. I have an older system which is a windows XP 32bit I was using originally but it keeps locking up so I have added the fire card in an effort to make the movies on a much faster system. When I open the PD 12 software it does not give me the option of importing the files from the Sony as my other system does. Differences being WinXP 32bit and Pinnacle Software. This is Win10 64bit with Cyberlink PD 12.

Any ideas ?

I have checked the Sony site but this is an older camcorder (2004) I believe is when I purchased it, and I don't see anything files\drivers that can help.

*UPDATE*

Connected the Sony to my old WinXP system and it no long sees the camcorder on it. I am guessing something went wrong with the camcorder. I have to find another means to import the miniDV tapes I have. I'll try to find something Win10 Compatible and hopefully it will work. *ugh*
