I don't want them on when I start a movie and using PowerDVD by itself and looking at the subtitle settings I see nothing to force them on by default, only change how they look. And this is how all titles work when using PowerDVD by itself, the subtitles are off when you start the movie. Only after the movie is playing can I see the right click menu Primary Subtitle option and set it to ON if I wanted. I see no setting to have the subtitles on by default and that is what I want.
With the same title and using Windows Media Center, PowerDVD starts and the subtitles are always on and I must then go to the right click menu Subtitles settings, see that the setting is on and then set it to None. Under settings there is a Closed Captions option that is set to Off and a Display Upon Mute option that is set to None but could be set to have the subtitles on when muted. The Color Profile and the Closed Caption options are not changeable. ???

I saw a post about 14 and it still has the Mouse wheel backwards.

If I play a movie in PowerDVD 13 directly it works as it should but every movie played through Windows Media Center has the subtitles on by default. I did find the Closed Captions setting under display settings but it is already set to Off. Any way to get them to be off by default when played in Windows Media Center?

"So what?" Gee, thanks so much for posting.
It's an AMD and CyberLink issue. I have 12 and 13 installed and 13 don't do this but it has other issues. The skip forward and back are reversed from all previous versions of PowerDVD and other players, it crashes lots and the black levels are messed up. CyberLink knows about these but has never fixed them. In fact, the very last update to 12 (3519) breaks the blacks.

The AMD 14.6 driver breaks the PowerDVD12 Windows Media Player plug in. I just get a black screen with audio when the movie is playing. If you start PowerDVD outside of Media Payer it works as it should. The AMD 14.4 driver worked.

I paid for 13 but am still using 12 as 13 crashes a lot for me. They list 2 or 3 updates that they say improve stability in 13 but it still crashes while 12 runs fine. I’d wait on 14 if at all. VLC media player is free, smaller, runs faster, never crashes and plays more file types and don’t install a bunch of stuff you don’t want but can’t play HD audio yet.

Yes, I don’t know why on earth you would change such a thing. Other media payers do it the normal way, AS DID PowerDVD 12! Why was this changed? At least make it user configurable.

I gave them a call but they would not give me the full install. They did give me a link to a new version of the PowerDVD 10 update (2325) install but it has the same issue. Gets stuck saying it’s creating shortcuts.

Got a response today:
Thank you for writing back.
This is to inform you that I have escalated your concern with details to our Product & Development team for further analysis.
We will get back to you on your original CSID # CS001304345 as soon as we get updates about your case.
I sent another reply begging them to let me have the full install of 10 so I can watch movies again.

Still no update from 11/22 when they told me to install 13. Anyone know how to get the full 10 install? I don't know why they do this, I think it was 9 that did the same thing and they ended up giving me a full install for it.
There is some kind of odd hiccup in their update logic when you have had other versions of PowerDVD installed. I tried the CyberLink Cleaner program but I can only install the full version of 9 and the update to 13 that sort of acts like a full version in that you can give it a code from your old copy of PowerDVD. I did find that if I uninstall all versions of PowerDVD and use the cleaners 13 will not install. So it still wants to see some sort of PowerDVD remnant, even though I've seen support tell you all you need is the 13 install and a old PowerDVD code.

Help?

Is it possible to get the full install for PowerDVD 10 to try and see if that works? I have the full install for 9 that they gave me a while back as I could not get it to update from 8. Now I’m having the same kind of issue with 10. I can install the full install of 9 just as it should but I think the upgrade install for 10 is missing some files that they thought would be there from older versions.
Support has not come up with anything yet. They told me to log in as the admin, I am, just like when I install PowerDVD 9.

I don't use 3D but I have the same kind of issues. Lockups pausing crashing but PowerDVD 10 and the demo od 12 worked fine. Both of the updates 3105 and 3313 to PowerDVD 13 have not fixed this issue even though they specifically say: ”resolves crash issues”.

I have to install PowerDVD 9 before I can install 10. PowerDVD 9 installs fine and I can activate it and run it. I then try to install PowerDVD 10 and it gets stuck during install saying its creating shortcuts.
I’m trying to install PowerDVD 10 because PowerDVD 13 keeps pausing or locking up during movies. PowerDVD 10 never had this issue. Both of the updates 3105 and 3313 to PowerDVD 13 have not fixed this issue even though they specifically say: ”resolves crash issues”.

I’ve also found an issue with the contrast. Other versions of PowerDVD on this same PC don’t have the issue but in 13. It’s easy to see if you play a movie in a window. As soon as any video begins to play you can see a light gray rectangle where the video will play while the rest of the window is true black.
Got a reply from support the other day:
"I would like to inform you that we are aware of this issue and our RD team is checking the root cause. Thanks for reporting."

Ok, it’s nothing complicated. Looks the same on my TV and computer screen. The other versions of PowerDVD do not do this. Most movies are at an aspect ratio other than 16:9 or 16:10 so you get black bars at the top. Some of that left over space is still part of the frame recorded in the movie. So if you use PowerDVD in a window and make that window more square than rectangle you get an area of black just under the PowerDVD title bar that is not part of the video frame. This makes it real easy to see what true black should look like. So in the picture you see a dark black bar then a light gray bar that is part of the video frame that was recorded but unused as the films aspect ratio is even shorter. This time around the PowerDVD 13 install doesn’t remove the pervious install of PowerDVD so I can run the film in both back and forth and it’s like flipping a switch that boosts the contrast. I noticed it right away so maybe it only affects certain video cards. I have an AMD 7970.

Anyone else see this? It's hard to see in the pic but I can see it very well on my TV. The work around don't seem to work most of the time so I guess I need to go back to PowerDVD 12.

This is still an issue in the newest update: 13.0.3105.58
I did find that if I go to the Video settings and use the "Use software decoding with TrueTheater enhancements" and the put it back to the default: "Enable hardware acceleration decoding whenever possibale" it then looks correct or gets rid of the contrast bump. You have to do it each time you play something though. Again I can run 12 on the same PC and it don't do this. It would be cool if they fixed it and put the mouse wheel forward/backward the old correct way.

That is the odd part. I too use the AMD controls to undo some of the image issues. It’s kind of like when the Enable dynamic contrast is on by default in the AMD controls under video. It makes the image a little bright but most importantly removes detail as small gradients of shading blur together. But as always I have it turned off and AMD settings would be the same for both 12 and 13. It’s like 13 has some kind of contrast boost of it’s own and I don’t see where to turn it off.

I keep forgetting but the other thing I found was that the picture is more washed out in PDVD13 and the blacks have a small glow to them. I’m not sure if it’s a setting I change at some point in PDVD12 that I need to change in PDVD13. It’s hard to see in the pic but you should be able to make out a band above where the film image stops and where the true black under the PowerDVD logo is. In PDVD12 the whole area above the film image is true black.
