I've been battling this same problem for quite a while. I try some "fix" and it "seems" to work, but then . . . no . . . I still get a slight "stutter" when watching most video files (i.e. mp4, mkv, mpg, etc.). Blu-rays and DVDs play 100% perfect.
It's not the encoding of the above video files that's the issue, as they all play 100% smoothly on other players I have---like jRiver Media Center 21, Zoom Player Max, VLC.
I also should state that I purchased 3 PowerDVD 15 Ultras---2 desktops and a laptop (all running different OSes, vid cards and from different computer manufacturers). So it's very very unlikely it's an OS or comp manufac. issue.
I've tried every "fix/suggestion" I can find---NOTHING has yet made a difference.
Things I have done:
--uninstalled [using an agressive unistaller porgam to remove every bit of Powerdvd 15 ultra]
--re-installed the basic build of the program, then incrementally installed each update---and testing a video at each point
--rolled back my graphics drivers (I have a GeForce GTX980 card on the desktop I was doing all this with)
--turned on/off a vareity of features within power dvd [like the video enhancements, hardware acceleration, etc]--and tested each change
--swapped out the HDMI cable from the comp to the monitor to a DV-D cable [a cyberlink tech INSISTED that the hdmi cable was the problem (????) and of course that made no difference either]
--turned on/off a variety of features within the graphics card control panel--and tested each change.
NONE of the above things I tired corrected the stutter problem.
My only recourse has been not using my expensive Power DVD 15 Ultra I paid for; but to use the other software I mentioned above---2 of which I paid for as well (jRiver Media Center 21, Zoom Player Max)---and the free VLC player.
All of these are excellent, but so far, none beat the picture quality of powerdvd--jriver and zoom come very close (about 95% close).
Does anyone have a fix that worked for them? I am utterly open to just about any idea/suggestion/etc.
Have you tried Alt + Tab to the desktop (properly, not just seeing the desktop, you have to switch to it) and then back to PDVD while the movie is running? Works for me.

I was able to do so, I'm pretty sure I checked that the receiver were receiving highres PCM too.

I noticed that 4K playback requires "Intel 3rd generation Core i5 or above" but the GPU requirements are very low.
Today I have an E8400 (C2D 3GHz) with a GTX 950 (which what I understand has both h.264 and h.265 decoding in hardware). To me it seems like PDVD are using software decoding (CPU) instead of offloading to GPU which would explain the high requirements?
My other option is to upgrade to an i5 2500k, that's not 3rd generation, but since it's overclocked to 4,2GHz I assume that's enough unless PDVD needs some newer instructions that aren't available in such an old i5?

I'm getting pretty bad stuttering when playing BD (RADEON HD 6670) until I (while the movie is running) quickly just Alt+Tab to the desktop and then back - voila - no stuttering anymore. Had the same issue with PowerDVD 13 I think (other gfx driver version back then).

Trying again, this time attaching DXdiag's output as text.
Thanks for taking time to answer. Yes, I was and am quite frustrated with PD, it could be a great piece of software if it only was solid. The format of the original video is Mpeg4-AVC/H.264 (1920x1080@30fps) from a Sony HDR-AS15. When uploading to Vimeo from within PD one never get to choose output format.
1. PD12 Ultra 12.0.2930.0
2. Please see attached screenshot.
3. Please see attached DXdiag output.

Nope, used "post reply" as with this message. Just tried again without using code-style for the dxdiag output, still the very same message. Maybe too many charachters?
Edit: works as per below. Guess error messages are overrated : Seems like there were too many characters.

Been trying to answer now 3 times but keeps getting:

Seems like the forums are as solid as PD...

Not sure where to start. Been trying to upload a video to Vimeo, first, it was too big for my account quota. Got a message about that. Fine. No problem. Decreased video quality - crash. Decreased it even more - crash. Tried again - PD12 hung forquite a while, left the computer, when back there's a message that I've filled my upload quota for Vimeo (500MB/week). Tried several times, restarted in between - same every time - crash.
Login to Vimeo - nothing there, quota still at 0% used. WTF?!
PD-series must be the worst program out there. Every time I upgrade I'm thinking "can't get worse", and every time I realize I'm just fooling myself. Too bad I already have a handfull of projects made with PD over the years. Seems like it's time to start having the auto save set to every minute again...
And yes, PD is the only program that behaves like this. Have had it on at least 2 computers, several Windows installs (W7 and W8.1). The only programs that has caused me more headache are Java client and Oracle client - this is over 14 years in the IT-business.
Now, when going through FAQs etc, I see that it requires you to be logged in as an admin? Is this a program created by and for amateurs? Properly designed software does not require admin rights! One should never need to be logged in with admin privileges, elevation when needed should be enough.

Some of the files that were not deleted we also older than one month (but newer than the ones deleted).
Doesn't feel very reliable with a program that deletes any files in a certain dir regardless if it is it's own temp files or not. The projects it deletes obviously has different names. Might be necessary to generate a checksum of every single dir when using Cyberlinks software just to make sure it haven't deleted anything it shouldn't :
Edit: and the files were deleted even if I disabled the auto delete of temp files.
|
|
What? That can't be where it's supposed to autosave a project - if so one would need to edit the setting for each project. Autosaving should of course be done to each project where ever it resides. Doesn't make sense. Or did I misunderstand you?
However, if I set the standard projects folder (that's the one it opens when you hit "open project") to something else - it doesn't delete my files since that particular folder is empty.
I've just about had it with Cyberlink and their buggy software. PDVD13 chopping like nothing else (PDVD 12 working just fine) and PD 12 deleting files (different computers). I've been an IT pro for the last 13 years and have never seen anything like this with weird bugs except for Oracle and their Java crap and Adobes Flash and Reader!

Guess it should be possible to store all project files in a single folder (it's really just the project files and two subfolder containing some music and photos for some of the projects). I store the actual video clips elsewhere. Isn't that why there are a setting for "standard folder" for projects?
I've tried to turn off the feature that deletes temp files automatically but it doesn't change anything.
20 files and two folders within another folder isn't much to me :
|
|
Carl312: Yes, that projects folder (shown below your red rectangle) :
Even if I strongly doubt that it matters, the path is: E:\VideoCamClips\PowerDirector Projects
Even if I set the number of recent projects to show to 0 - it still deletes the 10 oldest projects. I tried that since I find it strange that the number 10 matches with this phenomenon.
Since it happens just when PD exits (watching the projects folder in the File Explorer) and only then, I still blame PD :
|
|
It's enough to open PD, then close it - the files are deleted. I've set it not to open last project on startup and not to import the video samples that comes with PD.
I've been using PD since version "I can't even remember" but it only happens with version 12. Reinstalled PC for other reasons with W8.1 instead of W7 a while ago but I can't remember if I had the problem even before reinstallation.
First I thought it was projects created on earlier versions of PD, so I opened one at a time and saved it again in PD12 but it doesn't help.
Funny thing is that it always seems to delete 10 files
No, I do not have this problem with any other program, luckily.
Edit: it seems like it deletes the 10 oldest files
Edit2: confirmed, it deletes the 10 oldest projects in the projects folder upon exit!

Hi!
Have had this problem for a while. When I exit PowerDirector 12 (latest patch and one or two earlier) it deletes some of the projects in my project folder. I haven't been able to figure out why those specific projects are deleted. It's enough to just open and then close PD (without doing anything else) for it to delete the files. I copy them back and next time PD exits - it deletes the files.
Are there any debugging mode or detailed log for PD12? I just can't figure out why this happens. Interesting feature though...
I've tried to set the "number of recently used projects" to 0.
What does PD do after pressing the "x" to exit? Check if the current project has been changed since last save? On the other hand it deletes files even if I haven't opened a project since starting the program.

PD12 can be installed normal not need previous version even if you purchased Upgrade version, at least to me it was so.
You can also have installed previous version.
PD12 install in another directory, and may have 2 PD on your PC.
I had, PD10 and PD12 working on the same PC for a while.
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Thanks.
It's Power DVD that behaves that way that you HAVE to go all the way through the versions...

Hi!
I've been upgrading PowerDirector since version 7. Now I have reinstalled my computer and need to install PowerDirector (12).
Please tell me there's a way to install PD12 directly without having to go through PD 7 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10 -> 11 -> 12?
This would also save some GB's since I then wouldn't have to store the old versions installations files.

I am having the same problem with playing regular DVD's and Blu-Ray. Choppy playback and program just stops responding - ticket generated. I bought PDVD 13 because I had PDVD 9 preinstalled. Was not the problem!!! I have since uninstalled V9 - thinking of conflicts with both installed - did not help!!!
May I ask what GPU you have? It seems like most of us in this thread has AMD GPU's. At least two of us (Brian and myself) has 6##0 GPU's.
The fact that it ran smoothly after I updated the graphics drivers (only until reboot though) makes me think it's GPU-related or graphics driver.

I had the same problem with PDVD13 - stuttering BD playback. Works flawless with PDVD12.
Neither CPU (C2D E8400) nor GPU (AMD Radeon HD 6670) were even close to loaded (W7x64).
Updated graphics drivers and it went smooth - until reboot. Then it started stuttering again.
I tried to mount a BD ISO on the network, I tried to store i locally (SSD) and I tried a BD in the optical drive but the stuttering was the same.
I ended up going back to PDVD12. And just the procedure necessary to do that has made me consider buying some other BD playback software. I've had PDVD since version 9, and in order to go back to PDVD12, I had to:
1. Uninstall PDVD13
2. Install PDVD9
3. Install PDVD10
4. Install PDVD11
5. Install PDVD12
That is absolutely rediculous! WHY isn't my license code working directly for each version? I've been an IT pro for 13 years and I've seen few licensing systems that has been so poorly designed!
Won't try PDVD13 again, will either update when 14 is released and hope for the best or switch vendor...
