In answer to your question it's fair to say both.
PowerDVD like all software contains bugs, unfortunately running on a Windows based PC it has to deal with all sorts of combination of environments, nVidia, ATI, Realtek ... the list goes on. It's impossible for a software house to quality assure the software for everyone.
TMT5 may well work well now for all of your BD's but I suspect it will trip up somewhere, sometime (I've had issues with TMT3). To my knowledge there are only two other software alternatives to PowerDVD and TMT (from Roxio and Corel).
As for the Blu Ray format, I think it is broken, it appears to be a rushed project and is constantly changing, Profile 1, Profile 1.1, Profile 2.0, Profile 5.0 ... Given the amount of time BD has been available it should no longer be bleedin' edge technology it should be bedded in proven and accessible for the masses.
All the best with your setup BaldEagle.

Patch appeared to work, i.e. playd blu ray, not tested DVD or 3D BD ! For me no other actions necessary.

Hi Mik3,
No this did not solve the problem, however I will try the 3306 patch, if that doesn't work I'll take a leaf out of your book from the X-Men post

Samw123,
I never got 1080p 3D to work with PDVD 9 3D but when I switched resolution down to 720p it worked fine (Christmas Carol, Bolt). Have you tried different resolutions or modes on your graphics card ?
If that doesn't work then I think it's unlikely the issue will be fixed, the 3D version of PDVD 9 seems to be a special build shipped with BD drives (my copy came with a Sony drive).

Still unable to play BD with PDVD 10 Ultra mk2.
Luckily PDVD 9 Ultra still plays BD but also exhibits the same issues as
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/17986.page
i.e. you need to press play twice.

Thanks Michael, I am using the MSFT drivers as the ATI / Realtek ones cause PDVD 10 to crash, PDVD 9 works fine with the ATI drivers and I'm currently using PDVD 9 (although none of the PDVD 9 version I have play 3D !).

Hi samw123,
I got PDVD 9 3D with a Sony BD player, unfortunately I never got the 3D to work. It looks like it's a special build that Cyberlink supply to drive manufacturers ... I upgraded to PDVD Ultra Mk2.
Good luck, I'll keep an eye on this post for progress.

Uninstalled PDVD 10 Ultra Mk2.
Installed PDVD 9 Ultra, updated to latest version. Cold boot. Works, plays BD / DVD. Cold Boot. Try again, works.
Upgraded to PDVD 10 Ultra mk 2, updated to 2701. Cold Boot. BD fails to play, must be a PDVD 10 issue.

Got PDVD to work with the AV Amp once ... I changed the Audio Settings from
Current System Setting (use HDMI) to Use HDMI, PCM Decoded By PowerDVD
Changed from PCM Decoded to Non decoded DD/DTS external device and rebooted. FAILED ! PDVCD crashes again.
|
|
1. remove Relatek drivers
2. remove ATI driver
3. reboot
4. install latest ATI driver
DONE
5. check with TV connected only
OK but STEREO only available
6. if OK try with amplifier
PDVD Crashed 41% on progress bar, subsequent tests go to 99% and hang
7. please try a physical disc and no BD Image
Always, never use images, tried all discs owned
There is nothing in the error log, hence my previous post asking for requests to allow me to obtain more verbose issue (or trace).
Thanks for your help so far, any other ideas ?

Further to my post (re: BD crashing)
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/17797.page
The problem is HTPC -> TV worked. HTPC -> Amp -> TV doesn't work.
I suspected that it could be a resolution switching issue when going through the Amp so I uninstalled the ATI drivers, ran PowerDVD to play a BD and it worked (full test at end of post).
The issue is the ATI HDMI Driver, which driver should I be using ? What should the settings be ?
Full test
Remove ATI drivers (BD plays but only stereo)
Install Realtek 2.6 (PDVD crash)
Remove Realtek 2.6 (BD plays but only stereo, therefore indicates could be ATI HDMI device driver issue)
Install latest ATI drivers (PDVD crash)
Remove ATI HDMI drivers (BD plays but only stereo)
Install Realtek older versions back to 2.49 (PDVD crash)
Remove Realtek and ATI drivers (BD plays but only stereo)
Installer all older versions of ATI drivers back to 11.2 (PDVD crash with ATI or Realtek HDMI drivers installed)
Remove all Realtek and ATI drivers
Install latest ATI drivers, change output settings, tried all settings from 16bit, 44Khz to 24bit, 192Khz (PDVD Crash)
Conclusion PDVD will only play BD when the HDMI device driver is uninstalled and using default Microsoft driver.

Ok, so after some experimentation I think I've narrowed down the issue.
My setup is HTPC -> Onkyo AV Receiver -> TV.
Plugging the HTPC directly into the TV and it worked.
On putting the connections back to go through the Amp I changed the resolution of the HTPC in ATI CCC to 1080@24p and a BD played albeit the picture was a bit washed out and stuttered/choppy as well as the audio out of sync !
However on subsequent occasions (i.e. after reboot) BD's fail to play when the HTPC is connected via the Amp, even at 1080@24p. Connecting the HTPC directly to the TV still works.
Could be the problem is resolution switching in PDVD when going through the Amp - incorrect EDID ? - will try and post more information when I have a solution incase others are in the same boat.

Anyone coming back with advice or how to make PDVD more verbose ? It doesn't appear to place anything in the Windows Event logs
|
|
Nice one RedEye, I'm very pleased for you, fingers crossed your setup remains stable. Like you I've been thinking about abandoning the HTPC prospect of BD playback and been leaning towards a dedicated player or PS3 (which just seems to work).
|
|
Thanks RedEye, PDVD failing to play BD seems to be a common theme on the forum at the moment.
My setup work two weeks ago, the changes are (1) Windows update applied within the last week and (2) upgrade to latest PDVD 10 mk 2 patch.
Unfortunately I haven't had time to investigate the problem yet (the HTPC is on our main viewing TV).
If PDVD was more verbose it would be helpful.

Hello all,
W7 64bit O/S, 6Gb RAM, ATI 5670 graphics, LG H20L BD/HD DVD drive, latest drivers, latest O/S service packs.
W7 account logged in with admin privaleges.
PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mk 2 patched to build 2916. Plays DVD's fine. Insert any BD and PDVD launches but just exits after a few seconds, re-starting PDVD manually click play and it says "loading", gets to 99% and freezes or exits.
Any way to get a verbose output of what PDVD is doing ? Anyone else same experience ? Fixes and advice please.
Thanks.

The registry setting is here
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/45/16002.page
Bizarre how the ATI cards are built from the reference cards, use a universal driver but still require the initial system drivers (although the ATI 2400 I had used a custom dongle, the others have used a variety of HDMI/DVI/D-Sub and S-Video so maybe that was the difference).
Good luck with tech support.
