Man, this is getting stressful trying to both learn PD10 AND getting things to work !!! I recorded a 2 hour video tape from my movie camera successfully into PD10. At this time, I only wish to get 7 tapes onto DVD disks using PD10 for future editing once I learn the program. So I chose Easy Editor and let Magic Movie Wizard do it's thing. I did not use any music so things progressed Ok from Source - Style (chose one here)-Adjustment ( did not choose any music) and then onto Preview. At first, Preview moved along fine until it reached about 50% of the completion bar, then things slowed to a snails pace. Finally after far too much time and no further movement on the completion bar, I hit task manager and sure enough " program is not responding" message, so I have to close it out ONCE AGAIN. I cannot for the life of me understand what I am missing here. I have saved the capture, it is all there in the files, but PD 10 stalls out at the same spot every time in the PREVIEW section.
Can someone enlighten me please?
Hi Neil, that sure seems to be the case here, it was taking FOREVER for PD 10 to make the PREVIEW in Easy Editor, in fact it never got past 65-70% point so I finally had to close it out and go to bed at 1 am last night. I have no idea why it does that either. I even set the movie to 01:00:00:00, cutting the movie in half so that it would fit on the 4.8GB DVD disk. I didn't add music either, as my intention is to get these 7 Analog tapes onto DVD so that I can go back into PD10 later and make final version tapes on Blu Ray disks.

Hi Jim, thanks for heads up on double layer disks, I see that Staples (office supply store here locally) sells 8.5 GB (double layer disks) , so I plan to get some today to give that a try. I have to get this Analog 8 MM camera back to the owner soon.
I will have to get some Jeff, never heard of that size.
Jeff, that explains "why" I was able to get that format message once a day ago, I was using an RW DVD, the ones I have now are -R.
I was not trying to burn the whole movie to the 4.8 DVD, I had selected 4.8 GB disk size "thinking" that PD10 would burn 4.8 GB of the movie and the rest I would have to go back and burn onto a second DVD disk. Apparently I have to determine "where" the 4.8 GB location is on the timeline, and call that the END of the movie, then burn that section, then, go back to that same location and burn the last 2 GB (+/ of the movie to the second DVD disk. Of course I could use a blu ray disk which holds 25 GB and get TWO 8 MM movie tapes on ONE DVD.

I am presently using a box of DVD -R disks.

Thoughts/comments guys ?
Jeff, I had set the disk size to 4.8 Gb at the very beginning, that is eliminated as a cause.

Jim: I placed an unformated disk in the drive, but this time unlike a few days ago when I successfully burned two disks, PD10 program did not come up with format screen, that really puzzles me, as I never did use the MS format program. I am still trying to see what is going on this time as opposed to a few days ago...no luck, one step forward, two backwards..
After I captured about 2 hours of Analog Video Camera tape ( converted to DV ), I tried to burn to disk but I keep getting disk not ready warning. I have tried several disks, PD10 never asks me for format disk either. Now it may be because I have 7 GB of video to burn onto a 4.8 GB DVD disk, but I don't get that error. Will PD 10 burn program burn what it can to the max of 4.8 and then ask me to load another disk? Or, is this causing the error message of disk not ready because it sees it cannot fit 7 GB on 4.8 GB disk?

Thank you in advance,

Dick
Barry, I hope so at age 73, I don't have as much time remaining as a 21 year old kid.... LOL
hi Neil, I checked out PD Toots, they are done very well. The only problem that I had with them was; they move so fast at times that I had to keep backing up the video to see what they were doing. This gave me the distinct feeling that this video is for folks who have experience with PD already, and are comfortable with moving faster because they already know where all the controls and features are, and how they work. My comments were, " slow down, I can't move my eyes fast enough to keep up with your pointer". If you are trying to show me something that I don't know, give me chance to digest what I am seeing in Slooooow motion. Replay , pause, replay pause, tough way to learn. I will get there because I will stay with it, but there are enhancements that will make the process go much faster for new users.
I will check out some of those items you have listed Neil, I certainly have not taken a look at all of them yet, I got a little discouraged when viewing some of them because they were so badly done, voices were up and down in volume, and they had not scripted what they had intended to show, not very professional at all. I applaud their attempt, however when you are NEW at this game, you need PROFESSIONAL "how to" videos. I remember a looong time ago trying to learn MS spreadsheets. Then a gentleman came along with CD's and a work book, and I was off to the races. Why CL does not do this is beyond me, the CEO needs to LISTEN to his/her customers and REACT in a positive manner. THIS is the secret to a great company with happy customers, and happy customers will come back.

I will say that the people on this forum are just GREAT, very helpful, all of you get a BIG THANK YOU for your time and your patience and your helpful spirit. God bless you all , the world needs more people like you !!!
Do you think that Cyberlink will react to this request? It is a good project for some summer college help.

Jim: your method is certainly the best way to learn at present without people standing with us as Richard has suggested which obviously would be great.

In the meantime, I will certainly rely on this forum for help with any questions that I might have and there certainly will be many.

One question that I have for starters is: my Analog tapes when Captured said that I had recorded 25 GB into PD10. As my blank DVD has 4.7 GB of space, I set the parameters to 4.6 GB for the first DVD burn, it came out fine. When I tried to get the second DVD burned, I set the marker at the end of the first burn in editor, but something goofed up and I was only copying part of the remaining video onto the 2nd DVD. I have to check on what I was doing wrong.
Thank you Richard,Gladys and Jim for your replies. A few added comments:
JIM: I built my present computer a year ago, it has a quad processor (Intel i7 ), 6 GB Ram, 1 TB HD and another 1TB as backup, and an XFX Radeon HD 8450 Video card.

I have downloaded one Analog tale so far from my older 8MM camera, and made two DVD's that played OK on my DVD player. This was very basic just to see how things work, no real editing.

My problem right now is, I don't know what I am doing with time lines etc for editing, I need to learn what does what.

I have downloaded and printed out both the Users Manual and the book on editing. I need to see, then try, then understand what each thing does. That is how "I" learn. I hope that the combination of me trying after repeatedly reading the books, will lead to gradual understanding without complete frustration.

A teaching video, without language dialects ( no insult intended ) would be a GREAT time saver as well as prevent meltdowns. LOL
Yes, there are some videos that show how to use some of the features of PD10 but this is not what is needed for new users to learn video editing. PD10 is a powerful program with great features. But I ask this question of the software designers and product marketing people: Take a new person who knows absolutely NOTHING about Video editing, and sit down with this person without saying a single word, and watch them go about trying to download a video home movie. Then watch them as they try to navigate the editing and producing of their video. You will get the point that I am trying to make real fast.

You need to think outside of the box and make a SUPERIOR product for EVERYONE, especially new users? To accomplish this, make a series of DVD's that are tailored to each step in the process of using PD10 in concert with a work book that allows the student/new user to practice as they learn, one step at a time.

This process will work because students can take their time, and practice each new step until they have learned the process. We do this in industry, and have done so for years.

Just think of how many new SATISFIED customers you will have for this and other products with just a little effort outside the box. I have seen videos online where people have tried using U-Tube to demonstrate features of this product and others as well. Most are terrible, they go too fast for a new user to know what is going on so they give up.

If you really want to be CUSTOMER focused, especially new users, then give this a try, I know this will work.

Regards,

Dick

That is a very good price Jim, thank you,

Dick
Good idea Jim, I am in the process of converting 7 8MM movies tapes from our older Analog movie camera, 1990's vintage. Then I will move on to all of our Digital Movie camera tapes , many more of those. I plan to use the DVD's later to go back and edit and add etc, once I get comfortable with PD10, I have never used video editing programs previously, so I have a learning curve to climb. The final versions will be on BluRay disks as my PC has two Bluray recorders. The blank disks are very expensive, so I will make sure I do things properly before burning those babies!

Dick
Jim, it is working fine, I took another blank DVD, and it is working fine. Strange how one formatting program for videos works and one does not.

Thanks again Jim,

Dick
Hi Jim, I will try that right now, just got back home.

I see you live in Surrey, B.C., back in 2007 we took a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer from Baniff to Vancouver, however there was a train wreck several miles west of Camloops, so we have to take a tour bus from Camloops to Vancouver via route 5 and route 1 which brought us right through your city.
Good morning Jim, thank you for your reply. I used Windows 7 format program. It asks if the DVD is for Text/Data or Video, of course I chose Video. I will try another DVD, and then another program if necessary.
After getting my first analog old tape to Capture into PD10 ( driver problem with 1394 firewire) I have the first production ready to burn to DVD, but alas ! I get the infamous "Insert blank disk or rewriteable disk and try again" message. I am using a new DVD + R disk, 4.7 GB, for data and video, and yes it has been formatted for video. I tried this in both D & E DVD drives, same message. Obviously PD10 is not seeing the disk for some strange reason that eludes me. I am sure that someone has seen this previously and can enlighten me as to it's cause.

Thank you in advance,

Dick
I did Jake and nothing was recording until I selected the RECORD button, and by then, I had lost the first few frames.

On the back of the 300, I had sync set to OFF position, I don't know if that makes a difference, I don't see why it should, but srtanger things have happened...LOL
