I'm really experienced with PD8 200+ hours of edits to my name. Running PD8 with a quad core i7-920 is really having issues with dealing with any resolution Gopro hero helmet cam footage i toss into the timeline....720p, 1080 whatever. I drop a few MP4's in the timeline empty of all clips or just with a few of these helmet cam videos and the Playing back of these clips nearly alwasy results in a hang of the video play...... yet I can hear the audio track progressing. when I stop the playback of the timeline there is a massive hang of the whole window for about 10 seconds. When I get the play button to highlight again so I can do something I try to play again and it just hangs again. I can blindly just trim or split off peices to edit but until I render that project I'm never sure exactly what I'll have....FRANKENSTEIN Editing. I've managed to make it work in the most painful way in the following video. Adding just a couple 1st person clips which really perks up the video cost me hours of heartache trying to work it out.

I'll have to migrate to a different platform if I can't get this to work.

Generally you put the camera on Auto for light settings.....you can make an adjustment for a given situation and it will be fixed. I don't have experience with that but an indoor setting seems good. I used it in a car taking pics of us yucking it up. The pics were good at sunset and just after last rays at sunset still with the auto setting.

I have not met a person that didn't like the footage they got with the camera. Buy it from a place you can return it within 30 days.....nuff said.

great go pro video
dafydd, My wife has no choice in the matter of sport I do.....you gotta train them to think that way
Robert, whats the easiest way to learn about, get into, buy used or new. this is something I've been thinking about for a long time. While I'll drop a 40 foot waterfall while in my 40's Its getting OLD if you know what I mean. How old to hang glider pilots come. Any given time I'm 10-20 years older than the people I'm kayaking the Gnar with. Are there a bunch of guys doing this in their 50's or are the suspect landings real trouble and keep the average age of pilots more in the 25-40 range? Thanks for the info. I'm located on the Eastcoast of good old USA....by New York City.
James, if you spectate at actions activities that you can get close too it could be cool. Fishing and realing in the big fish would be cool.....much better than a still picture alone. Get the chest mount

Robert I like that video and activity. just curious how much is your glider ballparking at?
there is a brand new camera that has an lcd display for the camera on the back. this may be real useful but $$$$ for sure
is there an actual question here?

Its a great camera, and produces AMAZING footage in a variety of modes Letterbox/Not, and 30/60 frames a sec. when you go to 60 frames you lose a bit of Height of the image ....If you can afford an extra $100 you should buy the 1080 HD vs being stuck with crummy AVI quality footy. the 960 I think is an old model. I fumbled around reading on the gopro website before realizing exactly what it was and that it wasn't what I wanted. I've forgotten what it exactly was.

For my Kayaking Waterfall videos I like the camera in 720P mode with 60 frames a second to draw out the high drama of the waterfall drop over a couple extra amazing crisp looking seconds......again the quality is AWESOME and the camera has a knack for giving great less shaking footy than you would expect. Thats a bid deal cause name another sport where you buy your equipement and slam the piss out of it on rocks all day.

You can buy the camera for $300 I got mine for $238 on amazon.com. If you want to see some amazing helmet cam footy you can check out my buddy on vimeo fred norquist.....he shoots with a Canon 7D and 1 to 2 gopro cameras depending on the river.

I'm not a big fan of this camera for far away work.....I like to use it on VERY tight small creeks 3-15 foot wide gaps look impressive. This camera and the fish eye makes everything look small unless its right in your face, at hands length or within 20 feet. At least that is my preference. There are aftermarket housings without the fisheye that are available.....this is most notable for underewater shooting. The fisheye reportedly is not the best underwater and a flat plastic over the camera lens seems best. In this case the aftermarket company replaces the fisheye and does a preminant installation of the flat replacement with epoxy.
thanks, looks like I have a bit of work to do. I'll give it a try.
they were white. I'm not a photoshop guy (yet) I guess I have to get into this maybe. I could see a difference in white balance of each white VS the other but the boarder sticks out so much. any other PD config ideas as I gear up to pull these images into photoshop.

I attached one of the trouble Pip images for anyone to take a peek at.
http://vimeo.com/17836625

In the above PASSWORD PROTECTED VIDEO (Password=redbull)
I have a major stupid problem with pip artwork included for the sponsors of the video.
Video segment in question Timestamped 20 thru 30 seconds of the video....that's it.

Pip objects have a boarder on the bottom and the right.....very unexpected in a very
vanilla pip layering on top of the standard white color tile.

Anyone see this before. There were ZERO configurations in the Pip object. Is there a configuration I need to make to present the pip object clean.

I'm working off the 2508 build of PD 8
My Computer: i7 920, ATI 5850 GPU and 6 gig of ram. Windows 7.

My Project: A HUGE HD movie of Kayaking the Colorodo Though the Grand Canyon.

HOW HUGE: Perhaps 1000 video clips and expected length of 3-4 hrs.
VIDEO FILES: AVCHD (.MTS)

So the PC should not be a problem with power. As I increase the number of clips to the library and pull them into the timeline it seems to be getting more unstable. By unstable I mean that I have adjusted the length of the clip, postition of clips and caused crashes where everything shuts down AND I LOSE MY PDS file. So saving often has turned into save often and dont run on a PDS file that isn't backed up. So each 5-10 minutes I do a save as project 1.0 and immediately "save as" project 1.01. This saves my progress but I've lost some good work even still.

So now I'm thinking about creating 17 movies for each day of the 17 days of our trip

Am I missing something? I am downloading a new PD8 2508 build now (but I don't have much hope for this particular issue.

I've also been in the title room and just had it crash too.
Hey I have a P4 processor on a pc with no dvd playback support. I have power director and can create the dvds but cant play them back.

I was looking to get powerdvd delux which D suggested that I buy to get the codec so I'd play some sound on some mpeg clips as well as have the ability to play back the dvd's I'd create from the collection of mpeg1 clips.

Thats where I'm coming from. What I'd like to do is make that powerdvd deluxe purchase but I only see a link for Powerdvd Max. I assume I could get the Max product and this is just the new rev of the delux bits?

As a second thought I'd like to buy dvd software that I would be able to use in the future when I get a faster processor that can support high def playback well. With that in mind I'm thinking about getting the powerdvd ULTRA poduct that supports blueray/highdef if they bundle the in the needed codec and essentially the Max or deluxe version.

Comments?

thanks

Hey D sorry I lost your email and our exchange that was on my last computer or I'd have contacted you direct.
I assume both of these products include their own codecs for dvd and maybe mpg 1 and 2....others?

I was looking to buy a cheap $10 windvd codec from an unknown unproven site after this mpeg2 play back issue was resolved. Some sources were looking for upwards of $50 for windvd codecs. So to the cause of dvd playback I'm committed to buying something anyway.

Would then your suggested cyberlink pkgs more or less likely buy me out of both my Mpeg 2 play back problem as well as obviously playing dvds video on my computer. Operative word being "Likely", I don't beat up people for giving me their best guess on the mpeg 2 issue.

Could I email you a couple seconds of Mpeg2 to determine if the video I have from PD5 is flawed somehow in its creation.

I'm still wrestling with why some mpeg 2's created on my old computer play sound but those created on this new clean XP machine created by PD5 do not play sound. If my old Mpeg 2 files didn't play sound through WMP I would be ready to buy into your thought that the 2 year old MPEG clips could have been created in a not so friendly tweeked twist on MPEG2. But the fact that I have the opposite situation and it is my PD5 that creates the files not playable seems to be a problem that should easily be documented for WMP 9 in XP Pro. I'm thinking ahead wondering what WMP and the Cyberlink player might have in common that could continue to cause me failure to play back sound.

Soo....
1. do you think the suggested cyberlink purchase stands a good chance to fixing both dvd and Mpeg 2 playback.

2. do you think I should check anything else or proceed with #1 and cross bridges after that?

Wayne
thanks, so now I have more of an appreciation that not all mpg's are created equal by a single standard.

I poked around and I got a suggestion that if WMP 9.0 does not play sound for only some mpg's that I likely have a codec problem. They suggested to get an updated one. But what to look for in a codec Mpeg2 if you don't know exactly what is causing the problem with the sound playback.

On the codec topic I can't play back dvd's on my pc as I have not yet bought one for dvd and installed it. I'm looking for this codec and then a codec update to play mpeg.

2 things come to mind.

1) are there separate codec's for these two applications. (I'm thinking so) Can you get codecs for free or should I just buy one from cyberlink. I see a wide cost difference for codec software. I'm not sure what I should buy or look into. I checked into one codec for dvd and it seemed to be part of a sweet of codecs. Is that what I should be looking for a group of codecs for about $50 and cover dvd and mpg.

2) You stated that windows media player was not your favorite to play mpeg 2's. What's a good alternative that hopefully does not cost much.

Just wondering if anyone can point me at what to look at.

first of all I have mpg clips from other past editors (call it birthday clip). I can play these clips with Window Media Player and have sound. Currently with PD5 I have sound upon capture to mpg (mpeg 2 format). When I try to play the mpg clips or the completed mpg produced file all sound is lost. If I go back into the editor and again edit the project, all sound is heard while in the editor. What is it about capturing Mpeg 2 clips with PD5 that creates mpg clips or projects with incompatible audio tracks for windows media player?

Again media player does plays sound on other older mpg clips created outside of Power Director.

Last unknown to me is exactly what the difference of mpeg 1 and mpeg 2 is. I think both have the same extention of .mpg? I am not positive if my birthday mpeg is mpeg 1 or mpeg 2 format. Birthday has the .mpg extention. I'm assuming media player is without fault because this old Birthday mpeg plays sound. I hope there is not some quirky difference between mpeg 1 and mpeg 2. thus corruption in mpeg 2 play back and not mpeg 2 playback of sound....I'm reaching trying to think of what I haven't yet learned about all this.

I appreciate anyones input as I'm looking at just a reinstall to see if I can fix this from a clean system. By the way the editor is not on the net, really does not have much in the way of packages installed on it. Its pretty much XP, itunes, Office, directx, adobe acrobat, PD5 and an install of AOL 9.0 which hasn't been even been used. I'm not sure if AOL is the devil. Deleting AOL, PD5 and reinstalling PD5 didn't do anything for creating mpeg 2 files with sound.

Dafydd and everyone's post,

I guess I expected that there was dedicated piece of hardware that really did the job better than a camcorder. I thought a member on this forum would know some info about a better way. I've used a camcorder pass through a couple years ago from a friend. That camera broke so the option of the Canon camera is probably where I will head.

Thanks for eveyones post.

I'm having problems with a communication error preventing a write a dvd all of a sudden and I'll likely lean on you guys for that after I work it a bit more.

Wayne
I'll check out the canon.

Nobody uses a hardware device? I thought someone would have used a specialized device for better transfer quality.

Hey Mr Moderator.... how about a PM you must have some info and you just don't want to post out global ad?
I wish I had one of these old cameras. I went out to buy a mini DV camera in August and looked at least a Dozen at Circuit City and Walmart. None of these cameras now have RCA or any input for a pass through or record to MiniDV tape possibilities. You just can't easily find a camera that will accept a signal from the old VHS or 8mm. I was shocked as every camera before now had that feature. I'd buy another new mini DV camera if I could find the feature.

So I'm hoping that someone that is really demanding for quality would post what analog to digital transfer hardware worked well for them.
Like many I have the shelf of old 8mm tapes that need to be imported to the computer without the direct firewire way of getting it into the computer/editor from the camera.

I've looked at video Xpres DX2 around $80 and I've read disturbing things about the quality. I've been reading on the web about

Canopus ADVC-110 (77010150100) Video Capture. $225 Seems better maybe??? Anyone got it and an opinion?

I don't think I care about creating a dvd or just a stream of data into the PC over a usb or firewire. What I want is to get the best transfer of quality that I can reasonably pull off for home uses.

To round out the discussion my subject is Class 5 kayaking. Massive Drops up to around 50 feet and Huge beatdowns by the water. Some of the beatdowns need to be imported for an instructional video for class 5 creek kayaking yet to be published. I'd like to import the 8mm stuff in as best quality that a non-Pro can reasonably afford. If anyone has suggestions on capture applications to use with this editor other than Canopus or Xpres I'd really appreciate it.
