I was talking to my friend Wayne last night who has one attached to his helmet - venture Kayaking is his thing.

He was quite pleased with it but the catch came loose after hitting a rock and he lost the camera.

I'll ask him to post if no-one else responds and get him to attach a sample file (if he got a replacement camera).

is there an actual question here?

Its a great camera, and produces AMAZING footage in a variety of modes Letterbox/Not, and 30/60 frames a sec. when you go to 60 frames you lose a bit of Height of the image ....If you can afford an extra $100 you should buy the 1080 HD vs being stuck with crummy AVI quality footy. the 960 I think is an old model. I fumbled around reading on the gopro website before realizing exactly what it was and that it wasn't what I wanted. I've forgotten what it exactly was.

For my Kayaking Waterfall videos I like the camera in 720P mode with 60 frames a second to draw out the high drama of the waterfall drop over a couple extra amazing crisp looking seconds......again the quality is AWESOME and the camera has a knack for giving great less shaking footy than you would expect. Thats a bid deal cause name another sport where you buy your equipement and slam the piss out of it on rocks all day.

You can buy the camera for $300 I got mine for $238 on amazon.com. If you want to see some amazing helmet cam footy you can check out my buddy on vimeo fred norquist.....he shoots with a Canon 7D and 1 to 2 gopro cameras depending on the river.

I'm not a big fan of this camera for far away work.....I like to use it on VERY tight small creeks 3-15 foot wide gaps look impressive. This camera and the fish eye makes everything look small unless its right in your face, at hands length or within 20 feet. At least that is my preference. There are aftermarket housings without the fisheye that are available.....this is most notable for underewater shooting. The fisheye reportedly is not the best underwater and a flat plastic over the camera lens seems best. In this case the aftermarket company replaces the fisheye and does a preminant installation of the flat replacement with epoxy. Shooting the Video and the Rapids 2011

Hi,
Thanks for the input. Bestbuy here in Surrey, BC has a model (not sure which) on sale right now for 199 canadian, the reason I was asking.
I am not a sport enthusiast, I am 66 yrs old but was thinking of using it attached to my body just strolling around when on fishing or camping or on cruise ship.

Time then to take up the new hobby perhaps James.... venture Kayaking with Wayne

Think of the video footage you could be editing, not the near drowning experiences or the moments of cold water fear!!!

You'd be a potential rising star of the water kayaking world, the fatherly voice...

ha ha

Dafydd

Thanks Wayne.

I have been using a GoPro HD for some months now with my hang gliding. It is an awesome camera and as someone said though it really shines at close up work, not so much for distance work, the 170 degree wide angle makes distant things look too far away.

A tip for PD users the footage straight out of the camera is a bit washed out for me but really responds well to 1/4-1/2 "Video Enhancement" under "fix/enhance".

Because I mount the camera about 1 foot of my left shoulder I use 1280X960 4:3 Aspect ratio to get the widest possible coverage, then stretch to 16:9 in PD, I do not like the black bars on my wide screen monitor and as long as I don't get any of my close wires in the shot it looks fine to me. I must say PD does an excellent job at this

Here is a recent flight I did to give you an idea of what it looks like. When I get a chance I will upload a short test clip. There is also some in air footage using my Panasonic TZ7 a beautiful little camera for video.

Also the 960 version is a new cheaper model just brought out last month or so.

James, if you spectate at actions activities that you can get close too it could be cool. Fishing and realing in the big fish would be cool.....much better than a still picture alone. Get the chest mount

Robert I like that video and activity. just curious how much is your glider ballparking at? Shooting the Video and the Rapids 2011

Hi Wayne,

To buy new you are looking at around $5,000, second hand you can get a good wing for around $1,500 - $2,000.

Once you do your training and get your equipment it is virtually free, just turn up to the hill and take off, it is just about the cheapest way to get into flying. Plus flying a hangglider is the closest you will ever get to be Superman for real.

Cheers

Thanks for the encouragement...I have a height phobea...It would get me closer to the grave...but then again...I could do some 'hot' videos from down under..maybe even a documentary on the evils of Satan...or my excursions with the worm world..
Thanks for the information tho'. I hope bestbuy keeps the price on for awhile...

Hi James1, believe it or not most hang glider pilots have a healthy respect for height and are just as scared standing on top of a ladder or the edge of a cliff as anyone. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Hi Robert

Can you still 'crop' your video OK even though PD9 only has two crop functions compared to PD8 four?

Hi Neil,

I don't know what you are asking, I have never cropped my videos. If you are talking about changing the aspect ratio I just right click and choose change aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9

Cheers

Hi Robert

Sorry I meant to say the aspect ratio.

When you place the video in the timeline and right click to set image stretch mode does it give you four options eg. Use letterbox... Stretch clip to 16:9... Use CLPV to stretch... Use crop to convert...?

OR

Does PD9 still only have the two options?

Hi Neil,

Now I understand what you are asking. PD9 only has Stretch clip to 16:9 or Use CLPV to stretch.

I have tried CLPV but seeing as though for me I am trying to get maximum field of view I do not use CLPV because I loose real estate top and bottom of my video as it tries to reduce warping.

If you still need crop could you not use the crop feature under "Power Tools"?

Cheers

Robert, whats the easiest way to learn about, get into, buy used or new. this is something I've been thinking about for a long time. While I'll drop a 40 foot waterfall while in my 40's Its getting OLD if you know what I mean. How old to hang glider pilots come. Any given time I'm 10-20 years older than the people I'm kayaking the Gnar with. Are there a bunch of guys doing this in their 50's or are the suspect landings real trouble and keep the average age of pilots more in the 25-40 range? Thanks for the info. I'm located on the Eastcoast of good old USA....by New York City. Shooting the Video and the Rapids 2011

Hi Wayne,

Well to answer your age question, I didn't start till I was 54 and we have many pilots still flying into their 70's and a few even in their 80's.

The hardest part physically is the training, especially if you learn on the coast in sand hills. After the training is over general fitness will keep you flying for years and years.

Having said that, in the states there are a number of flight parks that also teach where they tow you up into the air, which requires much less fitness.

Regarding training, you cannot fly without being licensed. The best place to ask about schools in your area is this hang gliding website. It is full of very helpful pilots who would easily be able to point you in the right direction.

I will tell you though if you learn on the coast, that first time you run down a sand hill and lift off the ground even by 2 feet will live with you forever.

Cheers

Hi,
(in answer to what Neil asked about)
I mention the following to Wayne the other night.

In PiP Designer an editor can remove/uncheck the fixed aspect of a video and be able to squash or stretch a video beyond the frame display

I have in the past straightened out a "light" wide angle video using this method.

The ContourHD I have has a fixed 135 degree wide angle shot/lens making the horizon at both edges goes "uphill" and bending any yacht masts that come into view. It's my intention to compensate this effect using PiP Designer and if needed to add track movement using a motion path.

Wayne did point out that when he went through a canyon, the closing in effect of a wide angle lens does give an atmospheric moment in the action.

Sorry my bit has gone off topic.

Dafydd
PS I'm not sure my wife will allow me to go hang gliding....
