Quote John,

I did not use the Tutorial Creation Pack in this tutorial. It is free if you buy PowerDirector 365 - the subscription model. It does not come with PD Ultra or PD Ultimate. You can buy it for $50. I have two tutorials about if if you want to check it out. The first is here.

I deliberately used an arrow jpg image for all those who don't have the PiP objects in that package.

Glad to help you.

--Jim

I will contact Cyberlink and get the Tutorial Creation Pack, by one of the two methods you describe.
It's a little embarrassing or pesumptive for a beginner to buy something which is used to create tutorials, but I eed the elements which are available in that pack, it seems.
I will review the tutorials linked above.

Thanks again for your great help.

John
Quote I just created a simple tutoriual to show you how to accomplish this task. You will find it here.
--Jim

Oh my! How great to put all of that together in 5 minutes.
Greatly appreciated and will start to work on it soon.
I never knew about the creator's pack. When I purchased PD 17 I thought I bought whatever came with it. I will check this out from their site.
Thanks again.

Quote You are on the right track. I was looking throughmy tutorials and saw two about freeze frames, but I did not include techniques about adding titles. I can develop one for you and others. Do you want motion with the text that appears during the freeze or with the arrow, or do you just want the objects to appear?

--Jim

I would prefer no motion at this stage of my learning. I see your note about the tutorial and am anxious to get to it!
Thanks
John
(Apologies for possible repeat question.)_ I want to create a freeze frame during the video, let it last a few seconds, and put within that frame a few labels.
I was hoping I could just create the freeze frame, put in one or more text boxes, fill them with text and maybe draw an arrow to the spot in the frame which I am trying to label.
It's easy to do in PowerPoint with Snagit, but for the life of me I cannot find anything that simple in PD 17. I don't want to use a title with fancy fonts or effects.
I thought of this solution: Maybe I could make a copy of the freeze frame with Snagit, insert the text boxes and arrows, and then insert it into the timeline on PD17.
Seems cumbersome, but so far I can't find anyway to do anything seemingly this simple in from withnin PD.
I have spent many hours going over the very nice instructional videos but can't get an answer to this problem.

I will attach a link to such a labelled freeze frame which I copied from someone else's video, just to show what I am trying to achieve.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wg2l6pcga3qig9f/labeled%20image.png?dl=0

Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated

Thanks again.

Quote Jack,

Let me know if you encounter an issue and I'll do my best to help. My philsophy is that with complicated software we can learn hit best one small piece at a time. That was the genesis of "Sharper Turtle". Welcome to this learning community. You'll find lots of encouragement here!

--Jim

Thanks Jim:
I have the pdf with all of the Sharper Turtle links and am starting to open then now.
I'll get there!
Jack
Quote Here is a link on using some of the elements in the tutorial creator pack. You may find it useful

There are lots of other tutorials in this clickable PDF as well.

Thanks Jim.
I spent most of yesterday with tutorials. Most of the "beginners" tutorials covered too much ground. All I really needed initially was how to work with the video on the timeline, splitting, deleting sections etc. and paring it down to the stuff you really want to show.

I had an older program which was much simpler. Everything went on the same timeline ... video, stills, titles, etc. You could then work on all of the "scenes" individually and edit them.
But PD 17 is much more complicated. I will try to get familiar with the advanced features.

But now that I have the basics down fairly well, I am able to branch out and try some other techniques.
I will work on the information you provided.
Much appreciated.
Jack
Quote I can't see the screenshot. Will work on that.

Now I found the screenshot and downloaded. Will require some study.
Thanks again
I can't see the screenshot. Will work on that.

Adding on to what StevenG just posted, it sounds like you might benefit from watching a tutorial or two on the basics of using PD. There are many to choose from Cyberlink's Learning Center or by searching here on the forum or on YouTube.

As mentioned, you can simply place your title box(es) on a track(s) below the video and type in whatever you want to say. Depending on which version of PD17 you have, you can download the Tutorial Creation Pack or go to DirectorZone to find arrows, highlight boxes, etc. that you'd like to use. Some are also built-in and are available in the PiP Objects room (press the F5 key to get there).

You can display those overlaid on a running video, or you can go with your idea and take a screenshoot using the camera tool. Next, place that on the timeline so the viewer will see the video pause at that point, and your text and arrows, etc will show up overlaid on it. No need to use any 3rd party apps for this.

The attached screenshot shows green text and an arrow shown previewed from my project video, with the yellow text and arrows pointing out which is which.

Great ideas! I will go to work on practicing these suggestions. Nice to know I can do it all from within PowerDirector 17 Ultimate.
Jack
Quote You can certainly use graphics on upper video tracks and use them to overlay your video -- assuming the graphics are saved as transparent PNG files.

Just now that each graphic will be layered onto another video track so, if you've got half a dozen graphics to overlay onto your video, you're going to have to use that many separate tracks in addition to the track where you've placed your video.

So I guess much depends on how knowledgeable you are on graphic formats (like transparent PNGs) and if you either have these graphics available you have the software than can create them.

Also, how well you understand how to use video tracks.

***************************
Steven,
Well, I will probably flunk on both areas. I am not real facile about using video tracks (yet), and I don't know what a transparent .png file is.
My thought was just to split the video on the time line, leaving the space open, and insert the image there
I will go to work on it!
Many thanks for the reply,
Jack
I have a pretty simple video. I would like to label some of the scenes with arrows, callouts, etc. and then put that screenshot into the video and have it play for a few seconds.
I'm not sure how to do that in PowerDirector 17.
Right now, the only idea I can come up with is to take a snapshot and perhaps use Snagit to copy it, put in the callouts, labels, arrows, etc and then try to put it in the timeline and expand it to run for an appropriate amount of time.
If there is any better way, I'd greatly appreciate some advice.
Many thanks

If you use split and remove what is the point of the trim tool?

******************

Many thanks to all who replied. I just ran through the filmon the timeline and split it into parts, somewhat arbitrarily, then edited the split off parts and finally produced what I had left. Worked OK. But I am still shaky about the use of the trim tool, which I found did not help me.

I know there is a lot of material on this use on YouTube, so when I have a bit more time, I will go back to my learning process.

Appreciate the suggestions and advice.

Eu farei isso.

Eu pensei que eu poderia dividir meu projeto de vídeo e trabalhar em cortar cada seção dividida separadamente, mas eu acho que não posso fazer isso.
Agradeço sua resposta e voltarei "para a prancheta"

Jack [/ quotePostId]

You can and should use the Split timeline, then right click and Remove part you do not want, or select and Del.
I only use it this way.
It has an application (PDSpeed) that adds keyboard shortcuts, where S (Split)

Sounds like a plan!
I will try it tonight.
Many thanks.
Jack
Quote Look at the name of the clip and the name of it after the split on the timeline. It appear that your whole project may be one long video clip. What is shown in the screenshot is normal behavior when you use the trim function.

l will do that.

I thought that I could split my video project and work on trimming each split section separately, but I guess I can't do that.
I appreciate your answer and will go "back to the drawing board"

I'm sure I a missing something, but it seems to me that the trim function is covering the whole project. The selected split fragment should fill the whole trim screen, I am thinking.

I will try to post images of my attempts and put a link here.trim screenshots
Hope this link works. If not I will have to get a lesson in posting images for this site.

Jack

When you have the trim tool open, try selecting "Multi Trim" at the top of the window. See if that helps

Robert

Will try that and report back.
Thank you.
Jack
Just to clarify, Jack

Are you sure the whole project is not highlighted when you click on the trim button?

I dont think you are seeing the entire project just a greatly enlarged part of the clip that you highlighted before opening the Trim tool

Have a look at the attached, it may help. EDIT: Where I have said "see the whole project" I should have said "see the whole clip"

Robert

*******************
Thanks, Robert. Nice screenshot and text entries.
I will work on it again when I get home tonight.
I'm pretty sure it's showing the whole project, because the in and out markers on my trim view show only a tiny fraction of the clip.
Maybe I can load some screen shots, once I figure out how to do it in this forum, or create a link to a file sharing site.
Maliek's video was the one I was referring to as my lesson!

Jack
Video help on YouTube shows selecting a split off segment in timeline, and then opening the trim tool to trim that section only.
When I split off a segment of the main video on the timeline, select it and then open the trim tool, I am facing the entire project, not just the highlighted split off piece.

I'm new to the program, so I'm sure it's something I am doing wrong.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Hi Jack

At the top of this forum there is a sticky called PD News. Open the issues from number 2 and read the Newbie Room articles. Hopefully you will find them all useful. They are designed for people just like you.

Robert

I shall do so. Many thanks.
Jack

Thank you, Hatti.
I have seen some of them and will pursue your suggestions.

What I am missing is an explanation of how the multiple tracks come together. I guess I'll just have to work with it .
It looks funny to me to see the main video on the first timeline and then another video on the second time line, in the middle of the first one. How do those get together?

I'll keep working on it.
Jack
