Quote Sorry I am lazy. I tried to look up answers a bit. When I add a fade transition my preview video gets very choppy. Brand new laptop with good specs. I bought the new laptop because it did the same on my old laptop.

i7 with GeForce mx150
20gb ram
1tb hard drive with 250gb ssd

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Just uploaded patch and it is fixed so I will leave this here for anyone searching this. Kinda sucks I bought a new laptop because I thought it was my old laptop's fault. Live and learn.

You know you probably were just looking for an excuse to get a new laptop. Enjoy!

Thanks so much for the quick reply. The good news is that my problem has been resolved. Here is what happened:

As I was checking things out on the PC trying to figure out what possibly could be causing the slowness I noticed that my anti-virus program was not running. I tried to start it and was given a message that it was expired. I tried to install the latest Norton which comes free with comcast and ran into problems because it couldn't delete the old version. I ended up in an online chat with Norton support to clean up a bunch of old Norton files and get the new anti-virus installed.

After all that, I did my test of starting Power Director and seeing how long it took to open the User Preferences. The window opened IMMEDIATELY!! I can now drag stuff around on the timeline without a delay. It now plays one video file to the next without a long pause. This is awesome!

All I can figure is something that was cleaned up in Norton was causing the problem. Whatever it was is now fixed. If it happens again, I'll be checking my antivirus software first.

Oh, I'll go ahead and make sure my video drivers are updated..

Thanks again for the reply.
I'm running PowerDirector 16 with the latest patch on super fast desktop. Check out my dxDiag.

The problem is that the overall performance of the PowerDirector 16 (64-bit) app is slower on this PC than my little laptop with a weaker CPU.

For example, I have a new project and haven't imported any files in it yet. I click the sprocket for "Set User Preference" and it takes 5 to 10 seconds for the window to pop up. Then when I OK or cancel without even changing anything, it takes another 5 to 10 seconds. On my weaker CPU laptop running the same scenario takes less than a second.

Doing things like selecting video clips on the timeline takes a few seconds as opposed to being instant.

I'm wondering if I have a corrupt file somewhere? Maybe some hidden cache I need to clean? I've manually deleted all the temp files I could find.

This program shouldn't be so slow on my system. Any suggestions?

PS. I haven't always had this problem on this PC. I don't think it's a hardware issue since I haven't changed anything.

I just checked that myself, the casting (chromecast) will not go in 4K from powerdvd. It got transcoded I guess.

Thanks for the response. That's what I was afraid of. Like I said in my original post, I don't know why this is so difficult.
Hello!

I'm thinking about buying PowerDVD 18 to solve this issue that I've not been able to overcome.

I create my own 4k content using PowerDirector. I store all the files are on a desktop PC in a separate room from my 65' Vizio 4k TV with built in Smartcast. I would like to easily by able to browse through my PC files while in front of the TV and play them in their full resolution.

From what I've seen from the demos, it looks like PowerDVD 18 will help me navigate through my PC files while in front of the TV using the remote app on my phone. That is a handy feature.

What I've really struggled with is streaming 4k content from my PC to the TV. The TV has built in Smartcast (chromecast) and I have successfully streamed 4k content from Youtube and Netflix to it. I have not been successfull streaming the files on my PC. I've tried loading the file inside chrome and casting to the TV but the resolution shown on my TV is horrible when I do that. I don't understand why it is so difficult. My TV and PC are on the same wifi network. Why can I stream 4k over the internet from YouTube to my TV but not directly from my PC?

I sometimes upload my videos to youtube just so I can play them back in full resolution on my TV. I don't want to have to do this for all my videos.

Will PowerDVD 18 stream 4k from files from my PC to my TV?
Hello everybody. I had the chance to play around a bit with a masking in PD 16. Here is what I learned from the folks on this forum and from some experimenting. If anything I say isn't accurate, please correct me.

Yes, you can mask multiple noncontiguious areas of one video. In order to do it, you have to create your own mask. The mask designer tool built into PD16 is limited to buiding masks from titles or from other images. You can just draw a bunch of rectangles in mask designer to create a mask.

Building a mask from an image requires using a separate photo editing software package. Most should be able to do it. In my case, I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. The steps involved where:

  1. Create a snapshot of the video that you want to mask in PD 16 and save it. (It's the camera icon below the video previewer).

  2. Open the snapshot in your photo editor.

  3. Create an empty canvas using the pixel dimensions of the video you want to mask.

  4. Copy the snapshot onto the canvas and make it fit from edge to edit.

  5. Use the selection tool to draw rectangles and circles around the areas that you don't want to mask.

  6. Copy the the selections into a new layer.

  7. Select everything in the new layer and fill it with black.

  8. Save the latest layer as a PNG file.

  9. Inside PD16, select the video to mask and go into mask designer. Click the load image and select your PNG file.

Here is a short video of the finished effect: https://youtu.be/MwA-_zcyjPQ

I've attached the mask I ended up using.
Quote Hi KellyfromFlorida -

This is not a direct answer to your question. Hatti & playsound have covered that very well.

It's another possibility that might work for you in future.

Here's an app called Dashware & here's a video showing a guy using it with his DJI clips.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks for the info. I may play around with this in the future.
Playsound,

I think your solution will set me on the right path. I've never used "Mask Designer" before and it looks like to do what I want to do I need to first create an image with the mask layout that I want. I was hoping that Mask designer would let me draw a bunch of rectangles around the areas to mask but apparently it is not that simple. When you click "Create Mask" the only choices are to add titles or load an image. Apparently for the image that you load, the black is transparent and the other color is not.

I'm not really clear how you created your image using powerdirector and color boards. I have other tools that I can use to try to build the exact mask that I need.

I will try your solution when I have time. RIght now I need to get to work.

If anyone can point me to a tutorial for creating an image to use as a mask and then loading it in PD as a mask, that would be great.
Quote You can put the video clip with the settings as often on the timeline as you want. And mask out the desired areas.
So:

Drone Video on Track1
Settingsvideo on track2 - mask out area 1 (mask designer)
Settingsvideo on track3 - mask out area 2
Settingsvideo on track 4 - mask out area 3
and so on.

Hatti

Hatti, Thanks for your reply. I figured I could do as you suggested, but I really want to know if I could mask 4 different areas of the screen using 1 mask.
I've got two videos of drone which I'd like to PIP together.
Video 1 - screen recorder video from my iphone which has settings of the drone on it.
Video 2 - 4k video from the microsd card of the drone

I'd like to be able to isolate sections from video 1 (see areas marked in read in the attachment) and put them on top of Video 2.

I know how to isolate one area but I don't know how to mask several different areas on the same video. Do I have to lay video 1 in several tracks with each one having a different mask? Is that the only way?

Any step by step instructions would be helpful.
I found the solution. Apparently there is a known issue with the audio when trying to use video editors. It impacts more than one video editor including PowerDirector. You have to transcode the video using another app before importing into powerdirector.

This is the video that led me to the solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aokHl-VS14s

And here is the app that you can use to fix the issue before loading it into powerdirector: Image Roate & Flip - RFV https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rotate-flip-video-rfv/id1038299582?mt=8
I have an iphone 6 and created some mp4 files of my screen using the built in screen recording function of IOS 11. I know that the files actually have sound because I can play them on my windows pc using the "movies & tv" app. When I import them into powerdirector and pull up the audio properties of the file it says:
Type: AAC
Sampling rate: 44khz
bitrate: 128kbps
Channel: Stereo

For whatever reason, when I try to play the file, I see the video but don't hear anything. The audio track just shows a straight blue line with no spikes in it.

For ther videos recorded using a DJI Mavic Pro and panasonic camera, the audio plays just fine with power director so it's not an overall audio problem.

Anybody have any idea what the issue is??
Thanks for all the advice. I haven't picked a graphics card yet but from what most people seem to be saying, there is no need to go crazy with a $700 card when $350 will work with similar performance. The time consuming part is the rendering and a fast CPU will help more than an expensive graphics card.

The other time consuming part that I've been plagued with is problems with rendering that seem to be random. I get strange error messages 'sometimes' when producing big HD files or disk images. The process will run for 3 or 4 hours and then just go into lala land or give a weird error. Sometimes restarting my PC and then trying again without changing anything works. Sometimes I have to turn off 3 out of 4 CPUs to avoid the errors - this makes rendering take even longer. I'm hoping my new i7 5960x PC won't have these error problems otherwise I'll be looking for other editing software.

Thanks everybody for the tips. I'm still unclear on this graphics card stuff.

1. Sonic67 says he likes nVidia because of the CUDA encoder. What features of Powerdirector uses CUDA? What will I be missing if I don't have CUDA?
2. nVidia and ATI/AMD have so many models of cards. How do I know which is the best? Can assume the higher the number the better? The more memory, the better. I'm building a new PC so I want to get it right the first time and I'm willing to pay extra for one that that has the best performance/features.
I've been using various versions of Power Director for many years. Lately I've been postponing video editing projects because it has become unbearably slow and buggy. I think the change causing my problems is that I've started using the highest resolution on my canon camera (24 fps) and added a 2nd camera that has similar resolution. Trying to transition between two HD files in the editor is very slow. My PC is around 7 years old running an Intel quad core so I'm ready to build a new PC.

I'm thinking about getting an Intel® Core™ i7-5960X CPU which is the fastest desktop CPU Intel has right now. I'd like to know which graphics card will let me get the best use out of Powerdirector 13. I've read cyberlink's requirements sheet but it doesn't say which cards are better an others. I do see that apparently there is an issue with NVIDIA and drivers 340.43 and later. I'd like to avoid having to do any hacks or downgrading drivers just to make powerdirector work.

Here is the compatibility list from Cyberlink, which one should I get?
NVIDIA:
• GeForce 8500GT/9800GT and above
• GeForce GT/GTS/GTX 200/400/500/600 Series
PLEASE NOTE: For users of NVIDIA cards who have updated to graphics driver 340.43 or later, the video hardware acceleration feature in PowerDirector is no longer available. To re-enable hardware acceleration, please download and install an earlier driver.
AMD / ATI :
• AMD APU Family with AMD Radeon™ HD Graphics: A-Series, E2-Series, C-Series, E-Series, G-Series
• AMD Radeon™ HD Graphics: HD 7000 Series, HD 6000 Series
• ATI Radeon™ HD Graphics: 5900 Series, 5800 Series, 5700 Series, 5600 Series, 5500 Series, 5400 Series
• ATI FirePro™ Graphics
• ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD: 5800 Series, 5700 Series, 5600 Series, 5400 Series
• ATI Mobility FirePro™: M7820, M5800
Here is the latest on this saga. I tried at least five times yesterday to produce a DVD folder that contained the complete hour and 35 minute video. Everytime either the burn would hang (powerdirector becomes unresponsive) or it would finish but not really be complete (the original issue).

I wish I knew what was going on. Is it a hardware or software problem? I don't know.

I've decided to split my project in two. The first hour will be "part 1" and the last 35 minutes will be "part 2". I'm going to PRODUCE a Mpeg-2 for part 2. I'll go into "part 1" and do the "Create disk" and add the "part 2" to it, create the chapters for part 2, etc. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thank you for all the support!
Quote:
At the point you are at it is still quite a gamble to create a disc. So I think your strategy is the smartes....burn to folder. Then as with a m peg-2 file you can then open the video folder and take a peek at the result and not waste a disc.

Kevin

If I create a DVD folder, how can I view / play as if it was a DVD disk? What program do I use for that?
The burn DVD folder just completed and it's only 4.84 GB! This is getting annoying. One more attempt and then I'll do the PRODUCE instead and recreate my chapters and menus.
I do have rewritable disks but they are not dual layer. Do they make rewritable dual layer disks? If so, I should get some.
FYI - I'm just creating a DVD folder and not burning to disk right now. I get your point though. I'm curious what would happen if I did burn to disk. Do I dare risk creating another coaster?
