Burn DVD Folder cuts off last 10 minutes
[Post New]
Hello. I have a one hour thirty five minute movie with 33 chapters that I'm trying to burn to Dual Layer (8.5 GB) DVD.

Here are the steps:
1. Go to Create Disk
2. Under Disk Preferences I selected 8.5 GB DVD video, Widescreen, HQ-Best Quality, Dolby Digital, 2 channels
3. The indicator on the bottom left says 6296MB out of 8500MB will be used.
4. Under the Burn menu I select "Create a folder". I did not click Burn to disk because sometimes the burn fails and I don't want to waste my disks.
5. I click the "Start Burning" button and the let it do it's thing.
6. The burn completes succesfully with no errors. The DVD folder created has Audio_TS (empty) and Video_TS folder which is only 5.22GB instead of the 6296 MB I was expecting.
7. For the heck of it I burn it using Power2Go to a DVD DL and it plays ok but at a certain scene the DVD ends eventhough there should be 10 more minutes left.

I've run through this process twice. After the first time, I removed the scene where it had stopped (it was only 10 seconds) and tried the procedure again. The next DVD I produced played a few more scenes than before but did not go all the way to the end.

Does anyone have ideas on how to overcome this issue. I'm not sure if it helps but the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder look like this:

VIDEO_TS.BUP 14KB
VIDEO_TS.IFO 14KB
VIDEO_TS.VOB 100,198 KB
VTS_01_0.BUP 60 KB
VTS_01_0.IFO 60 KB
VTS_01_1.VOB 1,048,566 KB
VTS_01_2.VOB 1,048,566 KB
VTS_01_3.VOB 1,048,566 KB
VTS_01_4.VOB 1,048,566 KB
VTS_01_5.VOB 1,048,566 KB
VTS_01_6.VOB 133,672 KB

I'm running PowerDirect Ultra version 8.00.3022. I've attached the Dxdiag for my PC.

Thank you for reading this!

Hi Kelly,

Well that is an interesting and perplexing problem.

I personally don't have an explanation for why that happened. Although it sounds like there is something that might be on your timeline that is causing the problem. And from what you desribed you were attempting to look into that aspect.

If it were me.....See if this stategy works for you. I would PRODUCE a video file instead. I would select mpeg-2 file type...and select the DVD HQ profile in that file type. This is the type of file that Power Director creates when you Burn to Disc...so it won't be wasted effort. You will be prompted to create a name for this mpeg-2 and designate a folder for it.

Then once that file is created, check it to see if it eliminated the end of your video as before. IF NOT, then....start a new fresh project and then go to directly to CREATE DISC. Once there, you will see a a tab labeled CONTENT..select it. There is a button there, I believe it is on the upper left...when you hover your mouse over the button it reads."Add Additional Videos"...select that button and browse for your newly created mpeg-2 file you made.

Set up any Menus that you wanted and then select BURN. I would burn to disc if it were me and skip the burn to folder option. Just a tip that I do: I experiment with re-writable discs until I know everything is working before I create a write-once disc.

See if this alternate method of adding this video to your disc works out better for you.

Regards,

Kevin

If I PRODUCE, won't I loose my chapters? I have 33 of them.

Hi Kelly,

Sorry to neglect your Chapter information.

Once you import this mpeg-2, you then have the ability in the CONTENT tab to "Set Chapters". I haven't done this much so I am a little rusty remembering...I am afflicted with TMB (Too Many Birthdays)...but once the mpeg-2 is added, if you select the video in the list(highlight it) you will see a button appear called "set Chapters". This will throw the video onto the timeline and ...sorry for this....but you can then set up your 33 Chapters....sorry about that extra work again.

But if it works then you can "Save as" with a new project name and all this work will be retained for future use.

I think I covered everything....but you are the most effective quality control because you are doing all the work.

Regards,

Kevin

Kevin,

Thanks for your help. I'll go the PRODUCE route if I can't overcome the issue. Right now I'm in the middle of another burn DVD folder attempt. Since deleting a scene got me further before, I'm trying some experiments of deleting and re-adding scenes. The experiments take a long time since it takes around 2 hours to create the DVD folder.

Hi Kelly,

Yes,

Certainly continue on with the direction you are going. Occasionally I have seen people just having trouble burning discs and this other alternative method seems to work with a higher success rate because your PC is not producing/rendering a mpeg-2 file AND burning it to a disc all at the same time. This alternate method cuts out alot of the work that is required by your PC. It is simply burning to disc and nothing else. But your PC seems more than adequate to perform the task.

Best of Luck!

Kevin

FYI - I'm just creating a DVD folder and not burning to disk right now. I get your point though. I'm curious what would happen if I did burn to disk. Do I dare risk creating another coaster?

Coasters???

We all have our share of drink holders in our houses!!!! It is part of the game! To relieve the stress of using the Coasters, simply place full glasses of beverages on each, adult beverages preferred and the stress will disappear!!

At the point you are at it is still quite a gamble to create a disc. So I think your strategy is the smartes....burn to folder. Then as with a m peg-2 file you can then open the video folder and take a peek at the result and not waste a disc.

I highly suggest getting some rewritable discs....they can be used again and again to validate that the burn is successful. I know they are more expensive, but I end up drinking far less because I don't have so many coasters. Is that a good thing?

Keep us updated on your progress, we really are interested to know how things are going.

Well.....time for a glass of wine! Anyone have an extra coaster!!

Regards,

Kevin

I do have rewritable disks but they are not dual layer. Do they make rewritable dual layer disks? If so, I should get some.

Kelly -

The Captain is ferrying you on the right course, so I won't chime in on that.

PD provides a "ball park figure" for file & disc sizes, as discussed here... http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/11617.page

The burn DVD folder just completed and it's only 4.84 GB! This is getting annoying. One more attempt and then I'll do the PRODUCE instead and recreate my chapters and menus.

If I create a DVD folder, how can I view / play as if it was a DVD disk? What program do I use for that?

Hi Kelly,

I opened my mouth and spoke way too soon. I apologize for that. My error in giving incorrect information.
A dual-layer DVD+RW specification was approved in March 2006 with a capacity of 8.5 GB.[2] However, manufacturing support for rewritable dual-layer discs did not materialize due to costs and expected competition from newer formats like Blu-ray and HD DVD, which boasted up to 25 GB on a single layer
.

So they are not available....sorry to lead you astray. Blu-Ray won the anticipated battle.

If I create a DVD folder, how can I view / play as if it was a DVD disk? What program do I use for that?

Once the folder is created you should be able to view it a couple of different ways. Open the created DVD folder My Video folder then open the Video_TS folder and inside you will find a VOB file, the one with a large file size is the one containing the video. If you have DVD playback software...you could right click that file and then select the DVD player to view it.

The other method is using Power Director. You can import this VOB file into the media room and then play it back in the Preview window.

Here is the latest on this saga. I tried at least five times yesterday to produce a DVD folder that contained the complete hour and 35 minute video. Everytime either the burn would hang (powerdirector becomes unresponsive) or it would finish but not really be complete (the original issue).

I wish I knew what was going on. Is it a hardware or software problem? I don't know.

I've decided to split my project in two. The first hour will be "part 1" and the last 35 minutes will be "part 2". I'm going to PRODUCE a Mpeg-2 for part 2. I'll go into "part 1" and do the "Create disk" and add the "part 2" to it, create the chapters for part 2, etc. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thank you for all the support!

Kevin was right when he said this was interesting & perplexing. I don't imagine they're the words you'd be using!

I've never known this to happen... a "successful" burn that is incomplete. Hmmm. At the point where the burn stops (in the incomplete DVD folder), is there anything in the timeline that might be causing an issue? It's really very odd.

Your approach of splitting the project might help you isolate the issue, and producing each part to MPEG-2 DVD HQ before burning is a good safe approach.

Good luck!

How about a few screenshots of the project in the timeline and also localising to where the last 10 mins is to show the problem?

I'd like to know what frame rates and frame size of each of the mpegs/videos are as well please? Knowing where the source material came from is very useful please?

Using MediaInfo please can you give analysis of each of the video?

Dafydd
