GOOD NEWS!!!!!!

I have found the problem! For some reason, the .3gp files that my smartphone records 720p video in isn't liked very much by PD9. As stated above, it would cause it to freeze and crash.

So I got this idea monday night to convert them all to mpeg2 files and try that. After trying this conversion with various video converters with no luck (the sound would never match the video) I got the bright idea of importing them into PD9 and clicking Produce and saving them as a mpeg2 movie.

Since PD9 would only crash if I tried to move the .3pg files around to much or edit them at all, I decided to only drag them to the timeline only and click Produce. This worked wonderfully, but was going to take forever to convert each file. So after some more thought, I decided to import 20 .3gp videos at a time, drag them all to the timeline and render one large video in mpeg2 format. PD9 did this without freezing up since I wasn't moving them around or editing them.

Once the big mpeg2 file was created, I imported the file in my Project and used the Multi Trim function and split function to create my video segments.

I am sooooo happy this has worked!! I have Tuesday's off from work and spent the majority of the day on PD9 creating my 30 minute movie from the Christmas Celebration we had at my parents this year.

I hope others who are having problems with PD9 read this post and check the file types they are using. PD9 is very stable in my opinion, you just have to figure out which file types it dosn't like.

If you still want me to upload a .3gp file for you to mess with, let me know and I'll try to get it on here in the next couple of days to see if you have similar problems to what I expericened with the file type.

Thanks for all the help and feedback to this post/problem I had!!

There are lots of tutorials on this website. You can also learn a lot by watching the tutorials on PD7 and PD8 as well. There are slight differences from PD9, but they still can teach you how to do a lot of different things.

There is a link to the tutorials. Just click on "Tutorial Videos" once there.

This helps alot! Thank you all for the kind input!
Video's I'm working with when PD9 crashes are from my Motorola Droid X smart phone. Why am I using this? Well, I have it on me all the time and it takes pretty good video. I do have it set to take video in 720p, which is the highest possible setting for the video.

I've already done a 20 min vid before the reinstall, but thinking back, my phone wasn't set to the highest setting (720P). They are a .3gp file. I was using a lower resolution. I may take some videos in lower resolution again and see if they cause the crash or not. It very well could be the video files I'm using. It was working great when I was only making a title screen with some photos, etc.

As far as PD9 not being able to import a .AVI file on a 64 bit platform, would converting them to a different file format be the solution to being able to use .AVI files?

Oh, and Im confident that PD9 is stable. I used it with no problems before this reinstall. It worked wonderfully for me, so I know the issues I'm having are simply with my system and figuring out how to get all the kinks worked out.

Thanks for the reply's so far. I'll upload the video requested when I get home tonight.
Ok, I'll uninstall PD9 tonight after work. When you say a "disk clean" are you talking something like CCleaner? or is there something else better that you would recommend for the "disk clean" portion?

I am sure I ended up installing 64bit Vista. Have the disk in front of me. One way to tell is if you look at my DxDiag file I attached, it shows Vista is using the full 4gig of ram rather than the 3.5gig the 32bit will recognize. Everything runs smoothly except PD9, so I'll do the resintall of that tonight to see if that will work.

I may call dell in the mean time and get some 32bit version disks coming incase this dosn't and there is nothing left to try.
Well, I've done everything with no luck. I tried to edit only ONE video, which is all I had in PD9, just one. I went to split it and bingo, it froze up.

So... here is my only thought. When dell sent me the disks to do a clean install on my computer, they sent me 64 bit instead of 32 bit Vista. I previously had 32 bit Vista running with PD9 installed and had Zero issues with it.

Based on my computer speed, etc, could this be the problem? Everything else is running fine on this 64 bit version except for PD9. I would really hate to have to go back to 32 bit version since it took me almost 24 hours to sit here and download and install all the various updates, etc for everything.

Am hoping someone with some knowledge of what may be going on here could give me a word of advice or point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

updated the video driver. Still wont really let me do anything with out freezing up.

This all started after I did a clean reinstall of my operting system. I had no issues before this, so was thinking something may not be configured the right way.

I'll try to only import a few videos at a time and edit them before I bring in more. Bottom line though is I'll need all those video files in at some point so I can complete the movie I'm making.

Any other ideas out there? I've included another DxDiag with the updated driver.

Oh, the .AVI files I get are from my wifes Samsung CAMERA not phone, I mis-stated that part.

JUST remembered I hadn't downloaded the software for my Video Card yet. Am doing that now. Will let you know if that takes care of the problem or not.
I recently did a clean install (today actually) and installed PD9 with the update (patch). I had to do a clean install to fix some other issues. Apparently PD9 didn't like what I did. I can import media files, both images and video, with no problem at all. However, once I start using the program, its as though it is overwhelmed and can't "keep up" with the most trivial task and simply freezes and crashes.

I seem to be having problems viewing different video files as well now. Quick Time wont view .AVI files properly that I download off my wife's phone. I downloaded some codec package that allows me to view .3gp video files from my droid X phone, hoping this might take care of Quick Time as well.

I've tried to make sure verything was updated and ready to go before I downloaded PD9.

Can someone please help me and guide me in the right direction on how to resolve this issue? I will attempt to attach below all the basic information that is required for your insight.

Thanks!

Video editing is all pretty new to me, so am looking for some basic direction or answers on a few questions.

I purchased PD9 in order to take home videos and pictures, edit and burn them on to DVD's that my wife and I can send our Grandparents and other family memebers so they can watch them on their TV.

I can muddle my way through the editing portion of PD9 and learn as I go, I'm just not sure what file type to burn the movies and slideshows in so I can make said DVDs.

There are multiple format option ie: .mov, .mpeg2, mpeg4, ..wmv etc. Can someone tell me what the difference is? If my ultimate goal is to make a DVD for family to play on their DVD players, which file type should I use and why?

I know this is pretty basic, but I just don't know the answers. Also, if anyone has a website I could go to that might explain the differences of each type, that might me nice too. Thanks for your help!

Brand new to PD9, but had an idea that a vet user may be able to tell you if its possible or not.

If it is possible to fade out and fade in, to and from transparent on a photo, this may be a way to do it. If it is possible, this should do the trick.

Not sure if PD9 has that ability, but worth checking out.

As far as producing a slideshow quickly, without a bunch of editing, so you can go from the wedding to the reception and have photos from the wedding already playing in a slide show, I do know that PD9's slide show creator (Slideshow designer) can do it for you with very little effort. Check out the tutorials for PD7. There is a tutorial called "animated photo slideshow." May be your answer to quick slideshow production. You can have all your preferences already set and ready to go so you simply import the photos in to the timeline, click the slideshow button and a few more clicks and your done.

I will be more specific if what I'm trying right now won't work..

I currently have Windows Vista 32bit. After going through to make sure the Computer was up to date, I realized it has been trying to download Service Pack 1 for quite some time now. I would go to windows update, it would tell me that SP1 is ready to be downloaded. I would start the download and it would stay at 0% then eventually "time out."

After several attempts, I went directly to Microsoft to download it there. It downloaded, but wouldn't install. I bought my PC from Dell a few years ago and called them. They are sending me new disks, the 64bit version this time. I'm guessing something along the way has been corupted and I'm not computer savy enough to figure it out on my own. Since my PC was mainly for gameing until recently, there isn't a bunch of stuff other than Pics and Vids to back up which I'm currently working on.

Once done, I'm going to do a clean install and basically start over. I have an XPS 420, which is a Quad 4 processor (I forget the speed, am posting this from work), with 4 gig of Ram. I've upgraded a few things along the way, ie graphics card and power supply.

I will post a proper response if this whole process dosn't work with all the information you would require to help me resolve this problem.

Thank you for your interest in helping me. I'll update this thread either way and let you know how things went.

I just got PD9 and finished my first movie. Its about 21 minutes long and everything went smoothly enough. Lots to learn still.

So I click on PRODUCE and I have a list of options for file types. I will ultimatly create a DVD with multiple movies on it so I figured I'd go with MPEG-2 (for some reason I thought this would be the best file for DVD's, but not really sure).

It takes about 30 mins to render. I open the folder it was saved to and there it is. A Thumb of the start of the movie. So I decide to watch in on the computer to see how it turned out and an error message popped up saying it was an invalid file type (or something of the sort).

So I decide to re-produce it in the AVC format (decided on this by reading the descriptions). It finishes and the same thing happens. There is an error.

So before work this morning I try again with the .MOV file type. Havent tried it yet to see if it works....

I'm just wondering if anyone may know what the problem may be. I would think that these files should be able to be viewed on my PC (Vista).

Anyone have any ideas on what to check? Thanks in advance.
