When I open a project it shuts down almost straight away. I have to re-open it several times before it will stay open

Hi Dafydd,
I think the problem is solved.
Tried to update software with Windows and it asked to restart computer. I got the BIOS screen saying the computer was overheating. Downloaded 2 software heating monitors and both said CPUs running up to 98C without running any additional software and certainly not PD!
Took the side off the computer and sucked it all out and the temperatures dropped to lower 30s. Tried PD editing and it was vastly improved temperature got up to around 40 on quick editing but it didn't freeze very often and for only short durations. I dread to think what temperatures it was running at before. I will let you know if things change.

Dafydd B it is now a week since I posted the replys to your questions. Are you still covering my problem? Tim

Hi Dafydd,
Attacments as required. These are actualy files from a third party - video and photos, the audio files are the same as I would use. I tried out an old project of mine and it worked a lot better with whatever media I have from my own equipment but still occasionaly froze.

I got an email notification:
'Hello,
Your topic "PD 14 Editing freeze up" has received an answer since your last visit. You can access this message using the following link.'
There is only my original question, no reply?

I had problems with previous versions of PD being slow and then over heating my computer so I upgraded my computer with the following:
Intel Core i7-Pro-4770Quad Core 3.4 GHZ, Haswell, 8MB CACHE
ASUS GTX650T1,IGB GDDR5, HDMI, DUAL DVI GRAPHICS CARD
KINGSTON 16GB DDR3 CL9 MEMORY
WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM, 64 BIT
PD 10 then ran perfectly, very quick and no problems at all. I have just upgraded to PD14 and have immediately hit problems:
- Opening a project is very slow, infact nothing seems to happen at all for 30 seconds then is slow loading the timeline etc.
- A few editing moves, depending on what actions, such as a couple of audios, 5ish transitions, or up to 17 effects, and it freezes up. Day 1 I was waiting 15 seconds every time for it to unfreeze. Day 2, 35 seconds.
- Saving, again very slow to save project.
I copied the same settings that were on PD10 and loaded the 64bit components (not the 32)
Why is this doing this??????

Found the solution. I have up to know been producing direct to DVD from Edit. I then tried producing a file first, then putting the file in a standalone edit, changed settings to NTSC, got the warning about PAL to NTSC but the DVD came out fine.
Thanks for everyones advice as I learnt a lot of other things along the way.

OK, before I investigate that here is something else.
I decided to put it on YouTube and decided to make a standard quality only file for uploading. It came out with the same articated problem as with the NTSC conversion - an artifact line going across horizontaly on movement of and object. I then created the HG (top quality) file and that was fine. Is this any clue?
|
|
I think I get all of that. Camcorder video files are not the problem for copied videos (only if you play the camcorder through the TV). I am copyimg not capturing.
I think now that I may have not given the right info in describing what I call poor quality through my ignorance. The general quality is ok but there are judering lines across when there is movement, like someone walking as opposed to being stationaery.
|
|
The length is 55 minutes.
I am recording in HD and outputting to a stamdard DVD (what else is there?).
When I cahage the settings to NTSC it says there may be a lose of quality.
The video files are downloaded from the camcorders hard drive by USB to the computer.
Are camcorders set up differently from region to region?
|
|
Thanks, yes I think I understand about quality reduction. The second part to my question was are camcorders set up differently according to where they are bought, do they create a different type of file so that mine is set up for PAL and if I had bought it in America it would have been set up for NTSC?
|
|
I use a UK Panasonic HDC TM700 camcorde using the highest quality HA1920 quality (but not the 1080 50p)
For the first time I tried to produce a DVD in NTSC format as it was being taken back to the USA. It did warn me that there would be a lose of quality when I changed the settingsand there certainly was, the quality was unacceptible. Is the problem that the camcorder is making files differently as it a UK purchase as opposed to if I had bought it in the USA or am I doing something incorrectly in the editing process. (I have had a look at my camcorde settings and there is no options for PAL/NTSC).

Thanks for the advice, however I am not that technicaly adept and when I tried downloading from your link my screening software (Malwarebytes) detected adware and quarantined it. Is this site/software ok, am I alright to overide it?

I have been trying to edit a film, it is a Windows Media Player (.VRO) file. When I paly it in Windows Media Player and other software it plays the entire clip which is about 1hr long. When I import it into PD it only shows about half of it and it has various bits missing. I have tried, out of curiosity, editing it in Windows Live Movie Maker and it will not even allow it to be impoted.

Thanks to Stevek & Kevin.
Stevek- No, I was unaware that NTSC is playable on PAL players.
Kevin - Changing the setting is stupidly simple, why I didn't think of it is beyond me!!!!
Using this forum is so much better and quicker than using the Technical Support system which is draw out and not user friendly.

I want to send a disc to America (produced in UK) but can not work out how to create a disc in NTSC.
I tried setting the Profile to NTSC on the Produce tag but when I try to open the file produced in PowerDirector 10 it comes up with an error message.
I tried just leaving the NTSC setting in Produce and Created a disc but I can only presume that it did not produce it in NTSC as I can play it on my DVD player.

Thank you for replying Carl312
This is the first time I have used this or any other forum, it is interesting, and if this is anything to go by, might be a quicker way of solving problems in the future. I have had PD since my first camcorder in 2003. It comes out top on the reviews. I like it and I am used to how it works. I always buy the best retail version going. My major issue, and this is what my submission is about, is that whenever I have a technical problem (I am not that technical myself)and go to Technical Support the same thing happens every time. I get an initial quick response which will normally solve the problem, but follow ups taker longer. I am in the UK so there is an added time delay (my response on a Thursday UK daytime, will not usually get a response until the following Tuesday evening). The answers are scripted and quite often the person replying has not fully read the details of what I have sent (I always send as much as possible), and go on to ask for information etc that I have already given. The result is a very long and frustrating process but usually resolves the situation. This last episode has proved very lengthy and ended up in my solving/resolving the problem myself.
I have absolutely no doubt that the vast majority of people upgrading their computer systems from XP Professional (32 bit) to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, requiring the re-installation of PD 9 Ultra (64 bit) full retail version, experience absolutely no problems. It was not the case with me, I got pixilating, lines, artefacts etc (whatever the actual terminologies are) on all files that I produced. All the obvious things were done, updates etc, and I was requested to try turning things off in settings. Files were sent etc – all to no avail. I cannot believe I am the only one to have experienced these problems. My PC is nothing special but is a reasonably high spec and exceeds all the System Requirements at the higher levels.
I persevered as I genuinely like PD and it is what I am used to. I believe that there is compatability problem somewhere with W7 clearly to do with something on my PC, am I the only one?
I decided, as an alternative, to trial PD10 64 bit. This is when I hit the error problem. As soon as I loaded in a file I got an error message to do with ‘media graphs and decoding filters’, I contacted Tech. Sup. Who went all round the houses and did not resolve it. That is when I looked at the forum for the first time and discovered that it is, as you say, ‘…well known’. So why did Tech. not advise me at the first point to get a full version with the effective 30 day trial option?
I have, as I said, now installed PD10 64 bit full retail version and so far everything runs perfectly without having to make any adjustments in settings or turning other software off.
Thank you again, from now on I will go to the forum first.
I hope this may have been of some benefit to newbies like me.

Here is my final communication with Technical Support which has caused me months of wasted time and expence for something that must have been known and I had to find out by trial and error:
Tracy,
The problem is now solved and quite frankly I am surprised that you nor anyone else at your end does not know about what I am going to outline;
The problem with my PD9 64bit (produced file was corrupted) did not occur until I upgraded my PC to W7 64bit from XP Professional (32bit). Despite all your endless ideas of turning things off on the PD9 software, and other software being turned off, the situation persisted no matter what I tried. I also tried the software on my laptop (W7 32bit) same problems.
I tried a trial version of PD10 64 bit and got error messages both on my PC and Laptop; you were unable to find out the problem. I then tried some forums including yours and guess what; it is a problem with the trial version that was only resolved by the people trying it out, by getting the full version. Why you were unable to tell me this is beyond me.
I then loaded PD10 32bit version (a friend’s), it worked on my laptop with no problems but would not work on my PC without the same problems. I bought the full version PD10 64bit and loaded onto my PC. Bingo! It now works with everything turned on. My conclusion is that there is a fault with various combinations of 32/64bit working on various combinations of W7 32/64bit (maybe even Home Premium and Professional).
You clearly have a software issue with PD9 64 which will not work on my PC or Laptop W7, 64 or 32bit.
I find it difficult to believe that no one else has encountered the same problem. All I know is that it has taken nearly two months, days of trialling, and cost in eventually having to spend out on buying PD10 64 bit which has no advantage over PD9 for what I need it for.
I am relieved, but also very annoyed.
