I have to be honest about this, I am getting a little bit annoyed as a loyal customer.
Going back as far as PowerDirector versions being in single digits, each time a new version came out I have paid up and upgraded.
many years. Then suddenly Cyberlink introduced the 365 model. Now I have to be clear, I dont like these 365 models so I have been paying the upgrades, downloading the stuff and installing it. Its the way I like to use PowerDirector.
But it now seems that customers like myself have become second rank customers.
repeatedly I see new stuff being made available for free for the 365 customers but we who have been loyal since early days when 365 wasnt there and who still prefer to buy the upgrades outright, dont qualify now for free stuff.
It is beginning to annoy me.
Maybe just me but its getting a bit on my wick !

Hi Loe,

I'm fairly new to applying LUTs , and I agree that they really slow down the rendering process.

I reckoned it was because you're then asking the computer to perform a change to every single frame of the video in the time-line.
In making time-lapse videos, I've often asked a graphics package to batch process over 1000 images to get them all looking the same. That can take a while to complete as well.

I rarely attempt to edit videos one hour in length, but if I convert my 5 minute shorts to the same degree, I reckon that my computer would take about that long as well...

You don't say what resolution you're working at - I always produce two copies, one at 3840 x 2160 h.265
and another version at 1940 x 1080 h.264 as more universally viewable. (My machine blasts through these much, much faster).
I have a Ryzen 2700 over-clocked to 4GHz, an Nvidia 1070 8Gb graphics card and 32 Gb RAM.
(No slouch, but many users of PD18 will be editing on faster, more capable machines.)

I will add however, that in the search of finding a program with better capabilities in the implimentation of LUTs, I started playing with a few alternative software packages last week... (The 'Usual suspects' when you google for "Best video editing software")
Without exception, their rendering times proved to be totally abysmal compared to the speeds I was getting from PD18 !
(Around 25 - 30 minutes to render a 5 minute clip ? ! ? )
This experience has re-affirmed my belief that for the moment, PD18 is still the best program for me.

Now if I could just get my 10 bit HLG files to play nice with a LUT, then I'll be happy.
(My HLG files just 'Produce' a black screen - I've no no idea why, ALL my other 10 bit files work great ! )

Gerry

Thanks for confirming your experience. I thought all this would be the case.
All my clips are 4K but like yourself, I render in HD quality. My graphics card is a gtx 1050 TI and the processor runs at 4.3
So normally PWD is very fast. I use LUTS when there are clips from multiple cameras or to get a different ' mood' or just lift colour a bit. But it shows that if someone wants to use LUTS frequently you need to be aware of all this. Nothing is wrong. It just takes much longer.
The topic heading says it all really.
I like the use of the LUTS files. They are often used to give clips from different cameras or different times a more uniform look.
Or just to create a certain 'mood'.
however in PWD once you apply a LUTS to your video, the rendering time goes out of the window. A 1 hour video will then take over 3 hours to render. Without the LUTS it would just about take just under an hour on my system.
I had hoped this would be improved in version 18 but it has not been.
so I am wondering is this something that can be fixed?
I do understand color matching etc but I am referring specifically to the situation where you apply a specific LUTS to the whole video.
A colour lift for example.

No I am definetely not looking in the autosave folder but my folder where I have directed PD to save my projects. but it is possible, thinking about it that it is also autosaving there. Weird.
but i am aware of the difference between autosave and project save.

good point about the shadowfiles. I will see what difference it will make.

I have resolved the naming issue. Although I was looking at my project folder, the autosaves were going to the same folder. Hence the confusion.
Switchinh off the shadow files indeed resolved the loading issue. Good call.
Quote PD doesn't name (or rename) any of your projects. What you name each one is entirely up to you.

However, it sounds like you're looking in the Autosaves folder, where PD will automatically save your project every xx minutes, and the long number at the end is the year, month, date and time (down to the second) when each autosave occurred. All you need to do is browse your normal project folder to see your actual (and fully saved/complete) projects.

There have been reports of people seeing a long project loading time that got better if they turned off shadow files. If you're using them, PD won't delete them for 30 days, so it's OK to turn them off before you exit. When you load the project again, it should load much faster, and you can then re-enable shadow files if you want for smoother editing.

I've had the same issue for awhile now. It's clearly a bug in the software. I'm able to scroll through about 25% of my LUTS without issue and can test them out as intended. But once I scroll past about the first 25% of my LUTS library PD stops responding for periods of about 30 seconds and then if I continue attempting to scroll or click on any other LUTS the same thing happens. The only way to get it to return to normal functioning is to exit the LUTS menu. I'm hoping this issue will be resolved in a future patch.

Also, a suggestion for the LUTS menu – currently after we select the one we want and exit the LUTS menu, if we go back in again it doesn't highlight the one that is currently selected...you have to remember or write down which one you chose in case you want to apply it to other clips on your timeline later on. It's a bit of a pain if you have a large library to try to figure out which one you selected.

I agree. same problem. PD18 Ultimate. Its a pain because you need to wait each time you click something to do with the LUTS. also I agree that the green tick showing which LUTS file you have used is not there when you go back into the LUTS folder. What I did NOT expect was that when I clicked on the LUTS box first time, it would actually find my LUTS folder with all of them I ever downloaded from various sources, automatically. this suggests it looks at some settings in 17 as my Luts folder is a subfolder in a seperate data drive. this might also then suggest that if you have uninstalled 17 you may have to direct it again to your LUTS folder ?? Once applied it works fine but scrolling through the LUTS folder simply doesnt work. some sort of buffering going on seems to me. A pain which will no doubt be fixed.
Using PD18 Ultimate. generally pleased. It seems robust but there is one issue when loading a project.
This project does use 4K camera stuff but apart from some transitions, nothing fancy.
The video runs about 1 hour so yes, its quite big. Yet PD18 handles it fine. So pleased with that.
the problem is when I load recent project or for that matter load the project after navigating to it manually. Everything is fine until it needs to establish the timeline Data. It will go to 80% and then just hang there
doing heaven knows what. takes around 2 - 3 minutes and then the timeline is suddenly established.
This is very different from PD17.
I am sure that it is doing something it needs to do but this does not haooen in 17.
It actually takes so long, just when you start thinking this isnt going anywhere, it has hung, it suddenly shows the Timeline.

By the way, why is the naming of the projects suddenly changed and weird? I have mine in a dedicated folder but projects there are named C_users_name_documents_projectname(which has some very very long number attached).pds

So you are saying that Cyberlink use the 'check for updates' as a device
to send me adverts and link me to the YouTube channel.
Well you are right it seems to work but in my view that is taking the concept of 'updates' well beyond its meaning.
I DO want to be warned about updates I DO NOT want, automatically, to be thrown into their YouTube channel.
I will indeed have to switch off updates, which is a backward step.
Cyberlink, this is NOT nice. Static adverts I can live with but this YouTube channel goes too far for me.
I want to be able to use PWD, I have paid for, without you intruding and using my video card resources.
Most will read this and not see an issue. I understand that. But it irritates me and I wonder how much further Cyberlink will take this
unwelcome marketing.
Imagine using Gmail or Outlook and be automatically connected to their Youtube channel ? It wouldnt be acceptable.
People wouldnt stand for it. So switching off updates it will have to be
PWD has been my GOTO video editor since PWD9. I like it. But lately some irritating features are creeping in.
I am referring to the increasingly intrusive adverts Cyberlink is inflicting on us. Yes, I get it. They want all of us to move to the 365 version. But thats not for me. I pay for my upgrades. 365 subscriber deal isnt for me. But all the time, on the 'producing' screen I see these 365 ads.
So I put up with that, but now suddenly below that, a link to the Cyberlink YouTube channel has appeared and videos
start to play about PWD features. So while producing, Cyberlink is using some resources of my Video card to sell me stuff and link me to their YouTube channel. Hardly professional. I find this irritating. I havent asked for this and do not wish my resources to be used when I am producing. I certainly do not wish to be forced to watch videos. Is there any way to remove this annoying YouTube link?
Quote Hi Loe -

I'm not sure what's happening at your end, but all tha basic slideshow templates are functioning as expected here. Samples of each included below...

Haven't check all the templates tagged "Theme Designer".

Cheers - Tony

sure, they work but not under all circumstances.
I am getting closer to working out what the issue is. thus far I can say that if you have produced a slideshow and have incorporated thus in a project, if you then remove that slideshow and try to create a new one in it's place, only the template of the previous slideshow seems to work.i have used PWD since version 9 and know what I am doing 'at my end ' and things don't work like previous versions. however now that I know the circumstance when it doesn't, I have been able to work around it.
I dont know what is happening but in PWD17 I have all kinds of problems creating slideshows. normally I paste my images and then create and save a slideshow. I then open a new project, import the slideshow video and finish with titles etc.
however many of the templates just dont work. PWD17 starts to create the slideshow, gets to 54% and then goes to the screen where I can preview. Except that there is nothing to view except the music (if i havent turned it off) and now and again a picture.
the only formats that seems to work without issues are collage and scrapbook.
No such issues in previous PWD versions.
Win7 home premium, 64b, bags of memory and space. highend videocard.
anyone else have these issues?
in PWD16 it was simple to apply a LUT filter because the link to the LUTS folder could be preset and thus it was easy to compare the effects of different LUT filters on a clip. You simply chose the next one.
Who on Earth can afterall remember what every LUT filter does with a clip, so comparing some was easy and very quick.
Now, in PWD17 this functionality has been removed. You now have to navigate to the LUTS folder each time and 'import' the relevant LUT filter. Only then can you apply the LUT.
It makes the whole process laborious and long winded.
Like most folks, I imagine, I do have lots of LUTS in my folder. granted, once imported the LUT filter stays available. so I guess I will have to spend an hour importing each one.
It wouldnt be too bad if you could import a group of them but no, they have to be done individually.
I wonder which genius dreamed this one up. Sorry, think again. This isnt an improvement in my book.

Well there you are; I see that after I posted the above this issue will to some degree be addressed in an upcoming patch.
I found the answer to this myself. for some stupid reason, when burning a project to hard disk, PWD still looks at the original disk size selected, although, of course, that makes no difference. So ANY burning to hard disk is limited to the max size a Bluray disc can handle. this sucks. I would be happy enough if the program showed a dialogue box with a message something like;this project wont fit on to the disc format originally selected, do you still want to go ahead? or something along those lines, or lets go for broke here, WHY if I select burning a project to a hard disk should PWD look at the disc format originally selected (something I cant avoid doing) ? Afterall, I may never want to drop it onto a portable disc, i may just want to keep it on the hard disk and stream it over my home network !!.
I want to burn a project to one of my hard discs. Available space on that disc 1.24 TB

size project 9206MB but according to PWD16 : the imported files exceed the disc space available.

so whats going on?
There is a way !

If like me you dont narrate but now and again lower the soundtrack of the actual video clip and then have a separate

possibly music sound track underneath, I have found the way to make Audio Ducking respond not just to voice narration but also to clip sound track.

The key to it all is that Audio Ducking doesnt so much response to the volume of the narration rather to the presence of it.

This you can use. Say you have a video clip where you, in places, want the sound to 'go down' a thus the music to 'come up'.

You can make audio ducking respond to this as follows:

at the point where you have lowered the volume of the video clip completely, insert a clip split. Where you want the clip sound to come back insert another clip split. Now MUTE the bit inbetween the splits.

If you now add a music track and apply Audio Ducking you will find that the music comes up where the video clip is muted and goes down where it isnt.

This is a partial solution of course, If you just want to reduce the video sound a bit rather than mute completely, then this wont work. It only works where you mute a clip. but its not a bad half way. As adding music or additional sound is the last thing I usually do, it will still save time and a lot of messing about. But Cyberlink please sort this out. Audio ducking needs to be more sophisticated and react to volume also.
Quote Hi,

Anything I have seen relating to Audio Ducking references only "...narration and voice overs..." and similar.

The tutorial here:

https://www.cyberlink.com/learning/video/824/using-audio-ducking-to-balance-voice-overs-and-background-music-in-powerdirector-16

indicates that:

"Audio Ducking is a powerful new feature in PowerDirector 16. Audio Ducking can automatically optimize the audio mix in videos that contain dialogue or narration by fading backing music tracks so that speech can be clearly heard."

The product FAQ here:

https://www.cyberlink.com/support/product-faq-content.do?id=20821&prodId=4&prodVerId=1299&CategoryId=-1&keyword=

also says :

"The Audio Ducking feature helps you to make dialogue or voice overs be heard more clearly by automatically lowering the volume of background music or other audio."

Your experience seems to confirm that.

Cheers

yes, what a missed opportunity. My guess is that most users will not as a matter of course narrate their videos

but instead use it as I do. Makes this Audio Ducking quite useless. Shame. It was one of the main reasons I upgraded.

Not much else new really.
I expected more from the Audio Ducking feature.

I dont narrate my videos but when the clip sound is uninteresting I do provide a music or sound effects sound track.

what I expected from Audio Ducking was that after I adjusted my video track volumes, then adding a music

sound track, that audio ducking would then take account of the gains and drops of the clip sound track.

It doesnt. Only seems to react to narration?

unless i am using it wrong, this feature doesnt add anything for me.

Very disappointing.
Quote: Hi Video editors,

I'm curious to know the reaction of gamers who record their video action using PDR14's newest screen capture feature?

Non-gamer reaction is important to, write a review of what you think?

How about showing members your video, add a link to your PDR14 screen capture video in your review?

This screen recorder really does seem to be way behind other such products. I am now very surprised indeed that such a poor capture utility was bundled with an excellent product as PWD14

my latest bug of several is that it records the pointer if you have it on the screen. Now, you may not know your pointer is there as it will have been blacked by the playing program you are recording from, but this screen recorder shows the pointer throughout the entire recording unless you deliberately move it off screen. There is no way to instruct the utility NOT to record the pointer.

i am truly disappointed. expected better from cyberlink
Its a very poor add on.

Some programs/games have a load screen and then switch to the game/program. This recorder has a fault, other recorders solved years ago.

It basically does not monitor the aero desktop (dwm)properly ?? so it records the sound of the game but not the screen.it just shows the loading screen. Using high performance mode doesnt change that.

i got round this by running the game (Microsoft flight Simulator X) in window mode which of course shows the desktop borders etc. Also the few shortcut F keys provided arent enough to control the recorder as they conflict with command keys elsewhere.

.this recorder is very poor indeed.

I will stick with Fraps.
thanks for the link. got it.
Initially when I try to find the manual, all I could find was ver 8.
The cyberlink site isnt the most user friendly I think. Still, I will get use to it no doubt
