Ah, I see. Great, thank you!
Those little sliders are unlabeled and I was curious as to what they were.

Sorry about the confusion; I was talking about both, actually. To me, these two features - PIP Designer and Title Designer - are essentially the same thing. Both are added to a second track and both give you an overlay on top of your base footage. Both are accessed the same way (by double-clicking the image) and both perform essentially the same functions; One could easily design a "title" in another program, save as PNG, and apply as a PiP, for example. In fact these two features could quite easily be combined into one.

Listen, I love this program, but applying fades is an examble of seemingly disjointed functionality. Here we have three different ways to add a fade, and three different ways to adjust it. In Transitions we can add a cross-fade and the fade-in/out time is changed by right-clicking and adjusting the Transition Settings (with little up/down arrows to change duration), or changing the default Editing settings. In PiP Designer the fade-in/out times are adjusted by moving little yellow diamond-shaped markers, which are unlabeled aside from the vague "Opacity" field. In Title Designer the fade-in/out is adjusted by moving little white bracket sliders, which also are unlabed except for a cryptic capital letter "T".

Would it be possible to unify or simplify these settings? At the least I think the PiP Designer and the Title Designer settings should function the same way, if not be combined into the same feature altogether. This will add uniformity to the program and make it more user friendly. Just a suggestion...
Quote: Copy/paste keyframes may save time if you're resetting a large number of images/clips. It will replicate the fade time you set for the "parent" clip.

Can you please explain what you mean by "copy/paste keyframes"?

I have been unable to find any way to adjust the fade-in/out time in Title Designer.
Is it possible to change the default time for a PiP Designer fade-in or fade-out?

I previously posted about the transition fade time, and in the Preferences under Editing you can change the default transition type and duration. Is there a similar setting somewhere for the PiP Designer? I can't find it.
Two seconds is too long for a title or an image overlay to fade-in or out in my opinion.

Thanks!

EDIT: This appears to be a feature request since PD6.

Hi,

I would like to add a quadrilateral overlay to a freeze-frame, followed by a cross through the middle, to highlight the portion of a video where something will be inserted. I can't figure out a good way to do this...

On a previous post somewhere I remember someone recommending paint.net but it seems this program can only draw rectangles.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: I don't really want a parallelogram, maybe something closer to a trapezoid. Really I just need to draw a shape made up of four intersecting lines with custom angles between them. I might even prefer if one side were curved. How can I do this?
I don't think it was the act of closing/reopening to be honest. I tried that twice and it didn't work. However after I opened the project the second time I let it sit for a while (I was waiting for responses on here). Then when I went back into the program and enabled fade-out, suddenly it worked again.

Just a suggestion to the programmers, while this may be intentional or serve some purpose, it appears to the user to be a bug. There should be a way to "reset" the key-frames when this happens. I imagine there will be a large proportion of users who will similarly make the mistake of trimming after adding a fade-out and the program should allow you to set the fade again.
Well I don't know what I did - in fact I really didn't do anything - but it seems to be working again.

I just closed/reopened the project once or twice and disabled/enabled the fade a few times and magically when I enabled the fade again the yellow dots were on the clip appropriately. It seems this feature "resets" itself over time?
Quote: If you select the clip and go back into PiP Designer, you'll probably be able to slide/reset those keyframes to recover your fade.

Tony, thanks. How do I go about "slide/reset those keyframes" as you suggest? I don't know where in PiP Designer you're refeerring to.
No I've been enabling the fade by double-clicking the clip to open in PiP Designer, then checking "Fades" and then "Enable fade-out". This has worked for all the other clips in my project. For some reason this method just stopped working for this particular clip after I cut off the previous end of the clip. The clip itself is still nearly 40 seconds long so there's plenty of time.

Thanks I will try your method if this fade-out continues to give me trouble.

How do you add a black slide? Is there an easy way to do this within PD?
Hi,

I previously had a clip with a fade-out at the end. I removed the end portion of the clip. Now when I try to enable fade-out to the new end, it doesn't work. No matter what I do I can't get it to fade out. I've disabled fade, saved, closed, reopened and enabled fade-out, and it still does not appear.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there any other way to add a fade-out?

Thanks
Great thanks for the response. Yes I believe I saw a youtube clip about it and considered that option.

However the object I would like to draw a rectangle around is rather oddly shaped hence I would prefer to draw directly in PowerDirector, otherwise it would be tough getting the dimensions correct.

Also is it possible to highlight a certain area of a clip and darken the rest?
Thanks

EDIT: I guess I'll draw the rectangle on a screenshot if there's no way to draw lines within PD.
Hi, sorry about dragging up a somewhat old post.

I would also like to add shapes; specifically I would like to draw a rectangle or perhaps a quadrilateral to highlight a portion of a video. I would like this to have straight sides. Is it possible to draw straight lines in the PIP drawing mode?

Also, somewhat related. I would further like to "highlight" this portion of the video with a rectanlge around it, or perhaps make the rest of the video a bit darker, just for a second or two. Is that possible?

Thanks
That would be nice. I will use the solution posted by ynotfish and simply change the preferences as that seems to be the best option.

Thanks everyone.
How do you save a custom transition? Are these really transitions that you create from scratch?

Also, is it possible to change the settings of a Favorite transition so that these settings stay stored along with it?

Thanks
Hi,

Great thanks for the quick response, that will certainly help.
However it appears those settings are applied globally rather than to a single transition effect.

Let's say that I sometimes wanted to use the default fade transition, and I sometimes wanted to use the "modified" 1-sec cross-fade version of it. Could I save the latter as a custom transition?

Thanks!

EDIT: What I mean is, would it be possible to copy an existing transition and paste it into "Custom" or "Favorites" and modify it there as a new transition? That would be useful functionality.
Hi,
I'm currently using the trial version of PowerDirector but I plan to purchase when that expires.

I was adding some transitions to my project today and I noticed that the default fade is 2 seconds, and not cross.
To add this transition I select the transition panel, scroll down to fade and drag that down to the video.
Now the annoying part is I then have to select that transition, edit it, change the time to one second, and select cross.
Since I will be using this same transition many times throughout my project (a 1-sec cross-fade is one of the most commonly used transitions in video editing and should be standard IMO), I would like to save these custom settings of "cross" and "1 second".

Is it possible to save this as a custom transition? I didn't see that option.

Thanks!
