Maybe try png vs jpg, might be jpg compression issue, here is a pic with 8K resolution from Media Library snapshot so it should mimic the source quality of your video.
Jeff
Yes been looking into that - I have other software I'm trying out and the snapshot png files are far better quality than the jpg ones. But a bit reluctant to use png files, as they cannot widely be opened - and I will be sending them onto other people as well as using them in my PD projects. (Just really annoyed that CL have changed this part of the software!!) Again, many thanks for your time and help.

That sounds like you have clips with a different aspect ration than the project. For example, 4:3 or 21:9 clips in a 16:9 project.
There are no settings to change, and the only thing you can do is to use the PiP Designer (or drag the control button in the middle of one of the sides with the black bars on the preview screen) to enlarge the scale to fill out the entire screen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my query. Yes I use different aspect ratios, I create home movies from my family's raw footage, taken on various devices. This has not been a problem on earlier versions of PD - I have often taken snapshots from video with all ratio sizes and no black bars. It seems to be a new thing on PD19. Such a shame to change a feature in a negative way rather than enhancing it. Thanks again.

I'd say not a design intent but it does appear to have some higher res functionality. 5 of the 6 preview resolutions all produce 1920x1080, however, the Ultra HD does produce a higher resolution as you state, but not the resolution of the underlying video. Impossible to edit at this preview quality setting but another short term hack to get a higher quality snapshot.
Jeff
Thank you for this futher reply to my query. I've tried this out and agree with your statement, and yes indeed the unltra HD is very difficult to work with! The resulting jpg is still not particularly high quality, but is better than the lower resolutions. Its such a shame because I used this feature regularly and it doesn't make sense why they would do away with a useful feature. Maybe I'll need to find some other software instead. Thanks again.

Hi Chrissy, if you click the button next to the camera icon under the player window, you can then select the preview quality option to up the resolution.
See the attached image I just took for you. I just took a screenshot from a 4K video, which is also attached.
Ash
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and to take some sample pics. I can see that the highest quality preview option does give a larger snapshot - though still not very good quality, and the highest quality preview is difficult to work with. It's a shame they no longer have this feature as I use it quite a lot.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I have tried taking a snapshot from media in the library and a freeze frame on the timeline, but unfortunatley neither give a very good quality jpg. Such a shame that CL removed the higher resolution option.

I have PD365 v19. When creating photos from high quality videos using snapshot, the resulting photo is very low quality. I understand there is a checkbox for using the original video size as a snapshot image, but I can't find it - please could somone tell me where to find the checkbox on v19? many thanks

I have PD 365 v19.1.2321. When poducing snapshots from video using the 'camera' button, the resulting jpgs have black bars accross the top and bottom on landscape shots and accross the two sides on portrait shots. Resulting in a great deal of cropping required on the jpg photos. Previous versions of PD have only taken a snapshot of the actual subjects in the frame - therefore no cropping required. Can anyone please help me with this problem, I can't seem to find a setting to change. Many thanks.

Thank you both for your help on this topic.
I do still have PD16 installed, and I guess that's why PD18 can still see my custom title templates. When updating previous versions, if I had been asked if I wanted to uninstall the oldest one first, I would have gone with the default or suggested answer, and I guess that's why I've had the problem of losing custom files in the past.
Just for information for anyone else reading this, I was worried about leaving my previous custom templates in an old PD folder under documents on my C drive - even though my 18 update can still see them, so I experimented with moving just a couple to the new default folder that PD18 installed during the update. And to my surprise, they are still accessible using PD18 - I closed everything down just to make sure. I have since moved all of my custom templates over to the '18' folder, leaving nothing in the '16' one, and PD18 seems to have been able to follow their new path and still keep them accessible in PD18. However, they are of course no longer available in my old PD16.

Thank you so much for your reply, I was beginning to think it was perhaps a silly question.
I don't recall uninstalling previous versions in the past when I have upgraded, but perhaps I did, because when I upgraded from PD16 to 18 this time, the custom title templates are all still there!! The whole process was different this time, so maybe that had something to do with it.
However, perhaps someone could help me further - these custom title templates are still under a folder called 16 on my C drive under documents (presumably PD18 has a way of finding them), but I'm worried about leaving them there for future updates. If I move them into the new folder called '18', will my current PD still find them there? Or will it mess things up?!!
Thank you for the tip about templates on DZ - I always assumed once you uploaded, there would be no way of removing them later.

How do I transfer custom templates, such as titles, to an updated version of powerdirector? In the past I have lost all custom templates when updating. I now know I can re-download and templates I have downloaded from Directorzone, but what about the title templates I've created?
