Well, I came back to the file today and tried to produce it once again with the hopes of seeing exactly where it stopped. It worked this time! I hadn't changed anything between yesterday and today, so I have no idea what the deal is. It must have just been a bad day! Thanks for trying to help, Jaime.

I do have QuickTime installed. The video is .MOV format. As I mentioned, the rendering gets partway through the video before I get the error. Is there a "decoding filter" that is used to process video effects like Focus?

On trying to produce a video and upload to YouTube, I have gotten the following error several times at some point in the middle of the production:
Media Source Error:
CyberLink PowerDirector could not construct the media source as a graph. This may be due to lack of decoding filters for the file you are trying to edit.
I haven't successfully produced the video yet. What does this error mean? I don't exactly know what decoding filters are, but I think the production freezes up when I use the Focus effect. It is the only effect that I use in my whole video.

If however, I simply move the track to the voice track and back then the volume settings take effect. Or if I move it one frame to the right then back the volume settings are recognized.
This is a strange one for sure.
I tried the earlier suggestion of moving to the voiceover track and then back, but that didn't work. At least I thought it didn't… This trick works perfectly! Very strange. Thanks so much.

Thank you for all of the prompt replies! I'll address each one.
Xerox: I tried putting the Smartsound track in the voiceover track (instead of the music track), and adjusting the volume still had no effect on what I was hearing.
Dave: It definitely seems like adjusting the volume should be straightforward.I definitely had no problems with it in PowerDirector 8.
Barry: like I mentioned, I also thought that I should be able to treat the Smartsound like any other music or audio file. That's what makes this so frustrating! I'm trying to use the Sly version of "It's Cool", but I have also tried this with other files that came with PowerDirector 9. I'm not able to adjust the volume of any of the Smartsound options. I am indeed using Quicktracks version 5.8.1.0.
Tony: This was exactly the method I was trying to use. My preferred method was adjusting the levels in the audio room, but I also attempted adjusting the levels directly in the timeline.
Carl: I like your creative work around to be able to adjust the volume. It's definitely a few extra steps, but it sounds like it should work. A downside is certainly the fact that the length of the Smartsound track could no longer be adjusted once producing and reinserting into the timeline.
I would still like to hear if anyone else has any more ideas as to why adjusting the volume levels is not having an effect. Based on some of your input, it sounds like there could be a glitch in my copy. It sounds like other people are able to change the volume, but for some reason mine is not working.

I am a moderately new user of PowerDirector, and I have some scattered video editing experience over the last 10 years. For the most part, my video editing adventures have been straightforward, but I've come across something that is fairly problematic. I have added a Smartsound file to the music track of a video I'm making, and I want it to be quiet background music. However, when I change the volume of this file in the music track in the "Audio Mixing Room" tab of the video editing page, the volume I hear when previewing (as well as in the exported file) has no response. Even if I put the volume of the file down to 0 and also move the gain to 0, the Smart sound file sounds just as loud as when the volume was at the default of 50 with the gain in the middle. At that setting the music should be silent!
Wanting to make sure that I was doing everything correctly, I imported an MP3 file to the music track instead, and I was able to adjust it's volume with no problem. This seems to be indicative that there is some sort of problem with the Smartsound file.
Any experience with this? I am using PowerDirector 9.0 on a computer with Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I saw the link to download the software, but I figured it was just the same as what I already had. I'll download it and give it a try. Thanks!

I was asking about a question similar to this about a week ago, but the problem was never really resolved. As opposed to this thread that deals with the audio linked with video, I have been having problems with the syncing of additional audio tracks. I occasionally have audio tracks that I want to line up exactly with video (like a music track lining up with cue points in the video), but lining it up exactly seems to be impossible. Each little shift of the audio either does nothing or makes too big of a change. Also, the audio plays differently depending on the point in the timeline that I start to preview.
Also, video cuts occasionally give me problems. I trim or split the video exactly where I want it, and then when I preview the video, the video (and linked audio) drags on too long or gets cut short.
The problem seems like it would be a problem with the computer being able to keep up while previewing, but my specs should be fine (2.4 GHz dual core, 4 GB RAM), and this issue was not existed in the trial version. I immediately started having this problem as soon as I entered the activation key.
Any input would be highly appreciated :

When I bought the program after already having tried out the trial version, I was given an activation key, which can be simply used to activate the trial version.

The video is wmv, and audio is MP3. There are problems with the syncing from the very beginning. I want to clarify, though, that the issue is with the separate sound effects/music track syncing with the base video track (with its own audio).
The other problem was the video cuts. It seems impossible to cut the video exactly where I want because the next time I previewed or video, the cut is different than how I had left it. It's almost like the processing of the preview is not keeping up.

I am somewhat new to PowerDirector 8. I did a fair amount of video editing back several years ago, and I am getting back into it. I tried the trial version of this program, and it seemed like it did everything I needed. I purchased the program and entered the activation key, and I noticed immediately that the program was working differently.
I had a vlog video that I had previously edited with the trial version, and it was done to my satisfaction. I had a few audio tracks set over the video, and several cuts of the video to quicken the pace. When I opened the edited version in the activated PowerDirector, all of the cuts played slightly off... dragging video clips on too long and not playing the audio clips exactly when they should be played. I was about to re-edit the whole thing, but decided to produce the video first and see what happened. It produced perfectly fine, with all of the video cuts and audio overlays in the correct places. I decided it was probably a fluke, and once editing another video in activated program, things would probably work fine.
My guess was incorrect. I have tried editing a few new videos, and they have the same problem. I try overlaying audio to line up exactly with video in a certain way, and the audio clip always plays synced differently depending on whether I'm playing the whole movie from the start, playing just the clip, playing from the exact location in the timeline, etc.
It seems like it could be a problem with the hardware of my computer, though I quickly shoot down that possibility since the program worked fine as a trial version. I am running windows 7 32-bit with a 2.4 GHz Intel duo processor and 4 GB of RAM (so 3 GB functional ). Any ideas on the issue? I tried submitting a ticket, and cyberlink has been unresponsive for over a week.
