why is it that when i add video clips to the timeline they all collect at the beginning? i realise that you can change the order of them, but why can't i place them wherever i want along the timeline, with spaces in between that i can fill in later if i want?

It says I have to create a profile in order to get the best quality for my videos (ie so they dont look like they have been recorded on a hand held camera, but more professional) and I dont know how/ what to do. A step by step would be really helpful.
