I have had crashes but to be honest, and having looked at what works and what crashes, it seem to my own fault!

These are my general rules to successful operation of PD6 build 17xx (whatever it was)

Rule 1 for not crashing:- If it's in the time line or the media library then DO NOT rename or move or alter in any way the original file.

Rule 2 : Save the project every so often using sequential file names (Video 01.pds, Video 02.pds ...)

Rule 3 : Add subtitles, titles, transitions etc after composing the main timeline, and save after each one.

Rule 4 : If a .pds file will not load without errors go back to a previous one. I have only ever had problems with reloading due to me ignoring rule 1.

Rule 5 : Try to quit any backgrond programs. Turn off / unplug the internet access and shutdown your anti virus / firewall.

Rule 6 : Give PD6 time to "settle" after opening a project, ensure that all disk activity has finished.

Rule 7 : Turn off the "display sound waveform" option - cannot remember exactly what it's called, but it shows a video soundtrack as a straight line (volume level?) and not as a waveform)

Rule 8 : Keep at it.

I have often wondered if there is a limit to the number of clips. I have had about 1000 jpg's and avi's in the library and maybe over 300 used in a timeline. It has not caused any problems.

Kintara
It would not let me add this, so I have had to add another reply.
Here is an example of a subtitle, about 40 chracters wide, containing several lines, and 255 characters in total.
Kintara
btw, It would be nice to have the ability to turn these on and off during playback. That is the difference iI guess, between closed caption and subtitles (embedded on to video). Again see Wikipedia - Closed Captions for more details.

Hi Dale,
OK, here’s the easiest way I can see for you to get your subs in place.
It's a bit long winded and sorry if it seems complicated. As usual with these things, its easier to do than to explain, or read about it.
Here goes...

1) Open your transcript in MSWord and break the caption into lines of about 40 characters each including spaces. Best way to do this is to highlight the whole of your text then set your left and right indents to give you 40 characters per line. Check with Tools. Word count. This will be about right to fill the screen from left to right depending on your PD subtitle font size. Then go down the entire text and place a paragraph marker (enter key) at the end of each line. (Turn on “Show /Hide” non-printable characters, that funny looking backward “P”) Best way to do this is to place cursor to the Left of the first character on the first line and alternate between <ENTER > and the <CURSOR DOWN > keys. PD allows more than one line per caption up to a maximum of 255 characters.

2) Save the Word file with a new name (just so you won’t have to do it all again!)

3) In PD, go to Edit, Preferences, Editing, change the Subtitles default to a more manageable 2 seconds or so. The exact duration and position of each caption can be adjusted later, but they cannot overlap.

4) In PD open the Subtitles room.

5) Position the Timeline cursor to where you want the caption to appear.

6) In Word, highlight the text for your caption and copy it to the clipboard. <CTRL>+C

7) In PD, Click “+” A new line will be added to the subtitle room window, complete with time code.

8) Double click on the “Double click to edit” in the subtitle room window (not the preview screen), then paste, <CTRL>+V, the caption copied in step 6. Click outside the text box and your text will appear on the preview screen.

9) On the timeline adjust the start, duration, end of the caption if necessary.

10) Repeat from step 5

11) Save often!

Best of luck

Hi dale,
I looked at Wikipedia and it says that Closed Captions are, basically, subtitles. In the UK we use the word subtitle for any text that appears on the screen which conveys, in text, speech and or sound effects. The US and others make the distinction between what they call subtitles (speech) and closed captions (sound effects, music description, etc). That aside, I have replied to your query on Closed captions that I hope will help you import your transcripts. I have used other subtitle programs and they all seem to be unweildly and not have exactly the same format for their files.
Such is life.
Kintara
OK,
I have had a look at a .srt file I have used in the past, and it is just a text file in the following format:

Line 1 - Subtitle Number e.g. "1" followed by <carriage return>
Line 2 - Timecode e.g. "00:00:15,400 --> 00:00:17,600" followed by <carriage return>
Line 3 - Subtitle content - e.g. "Your text" followed by <carriage return>
Line 4 - Subtitle content - e.g. "More text" followed by <carriage return>
Line 5 - Blank Line i.e <carriage return>
Line 6 - Subtitle Number e.g. "2" followed by <carriage return>
etc, etc.

example
"1
00:00:15,400 --> 00:00:17,600
Happy Birthday

2
00:00:17,800 --> 00:00:19,120
to you,

3
00:00:19,680 --> 00:00:21,440
Happy Birthday

4
00:00:21,640 --> 00:00:23,180
to you!

"
Dont forget the blank line, and use Notepad to edit and save as a .srt file (or change the .txt to .srt when you are done).

I have cut and pasted the above example into Notepad and it's fine. Don't use MSWord etc for the final save as it adds a lot of unseen stuff to the file if you are not careful. Stick to Notepad.

Best of luck

Hi Tatu54,
Just to clarify:
You can do subtitles the long winded way, set the insert point on the timeline, go to subtitle studio, click +, double click the newly created text space in the subtitle window and type your text.) And they work I assume.
You have been sent a txt (or rts) file that you want to import into the subtitle track.
Trouble is it is not getting imported and so is not being shown in the subtitle window along with the time for in and cut.
Is that correct?
PD can be a bit funny with subs imports (and exports for that matter unless they are in the exact format that PD requires.
I'll look at some that I have used in the past and re-post with the format of the text file
e.g. something line this (from memory)
"1
00:00:01.02 > 00:00:05.00 <CR>
This is your text<CR>
More of your text<CR>
<CR> i.e. a blank line
2
00:00:12.00 > 00:00:18.03<CR>
Second caption<CR>
<CR>"

etc, etc,

Kintara

OK, so I read throught the other enreries and did the standard thing : reinstall the software.
All seems ok now.
Well , as stable as ever, which seems dependant on what the weather is doing - or how many eggs my hens have laid.
Any way, anyone else having issues should try the reinstall thing - it worked for me.

Kintara

p.s. I don't have any hens.
I have made a few completed projects now, but am stll finding my way around the mighty PD6 (with latest patch).
On one of my first projects I had video interspursed with jpegs and a music sound track running for the duration. I applied Magic Motion to the jpegs ansd it all looked great.
I have just started a new project and intend to have video and jpegs, but this time I cannot get the Magic motion to stick. The Magic motion window appears, I have tried applying zoom, pan and zoom etc; tried auto and manual focus but still nothing works. When I preview the image (output)- the first time the jpeg appears unchanged. If I preview again, the viewing window is greyed out, but the time pointer moves as thought it is all working. I click apply and the image on the time line gets the little (magic motion) flag on it. But it views as a still image with no motion.
I even went back to the script for one of my earlier projects that did apply magic motion and that worked just fine!
I'm buggered if I can figure what's going on.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance

Kintara
Hi Steve,
When I registered with Cyberlink they gave me Silver membership. In the members section (my Profile) I have a link to have a free copy of Power2go.
Look to see if you have the same.
I ain't tried it though, so cannot vouch for it's suitability.

Worth a try, anyway.

Very strange. Just as a matter of interest, how are you creating the fade in? Also, when you zoom in to maximum and look at the audio graph, can you see the fade in from the very start, or does it only start slightly later in the timeline?

Thanks

Andrew

Andrew
As mentioned elsewher, I used a black colourboard in the video and did a transition fade in. I have also messed about with adding nodes to the sound track and dragging the 1st one as low down as possible, never been fully happy with that method. Will try the one suggested by ddyy, seem sensible enough way to do it. Personally I have not played around enough with PD to even know that the mixing room as there (even though it is blindingly obvious!)
Best of luck to you all

Hi Pedro,
I am assuming that Reverse = play backwards.
I haven't seen a reverse video option in PD6, but then I am just starting to get to grips with all that it can do.

This would be a great feature to have and I have added a link to your query on the "Wishlist" topic.

There are many clever people on this forum and I would not be surprised if someone comes up with a work around to get reverse video.

Kintara
These are all great ideas.
Another one that I would like to see is to have a wider range of effects in the magic options for still pictures. How about a rotate left / right to complement the pan and zooms?

Kintara 8
As pedro suggests, how about reverseing video and audio?

Hi Richard,
Is it possible that you have not double clicked the text box? You then enter edit mode. Highlight the text then click on the typeface and size as required

Hope this helps

HI all,
I have noticed that there is a "blip" on the sound at the very start of my timelines but only when previewed in PD. The final rendered video does not have the blip, just the sound track as it should be.

Hope this helps

Hi Sanjit,
I know that this is possible with DVD Lab Pro 2, but haven't used the Cyberlink products enough to to know if PD or PP will be able to do it.

Kintara
If this occurs when opening a saved pds :- PD is looking for files that were in it's resources window (the one that shows thumbnails of files you want to use in the production) when it was saved. The thing is, if you move, delete or rename these originals then PD cannot find them to re-populate it's resources window and hence you are asked to "Browse" (look for the file)/Ignore(don't bother populating resource window with that file)/Ignore All (don't bother populate the resource window with any missing files) /Abort (quit the operation).
If you have moved the original files, then unless you tell PD where they are, they cannot be used to make the timeline. If they have been deleted or renamed then you will have to restore them and give them their original name, before they can be put back into the timeline.
Once they have all been found again then the timeline can be re-constructed by PD. Any missing ones will not be put into the timeline and so you won't have any video from said files.
Once the time line has been reconstructed you can remove thumbnails from the resources window, save and you will be able to open the pds file ok next time. The file that corresponds to the thumbnail needs to stay as it is and where it is. The thumbnail it's self isnt needed to reconstruct the time line, it's just a catalogue of the files that we may wish to use.
Blimey, have I made sense?
Hope that helps a bit
