Yep.... crop, zoom, straighten and even distortion control will delete data and end up with a lower-resolution result.

I typically shoot 4k/720p (Sony a6300 allows recording both of the same scene). I use the 720p for editing, then swap in the 4k file for final production.
I have a few audio clips I'd love to upload and share, but it seems I cannot find how to do this with audio.

I found where I can upload video in PD14, but not audio.

>Crop & Zoom

Crop/Zoom

Crop image in working window

>Play video until start of pan location

>Duplicate Previous Keyframe

Play video until end of pan location

>Duplate Previous Keyframe

>Play to end of video

>Duplicate Previous Keyframe

Now choose the third Keyframe (the end of the pan location)

Relocate crop to desired position

Go to end of video (4th Keyframe)

>Duplicate Previous Keyframe

That's it.
I got it figured out. I've done a similar screen capture as Barry's and am uploading it now. I'll post it as soon as YouTube gets done chewing on it.
Regardless, Barry's video shows a pan from the very beginning of the video clip.
I can kinda do what I'm looking for, but the pan is in the wrong direction. If I try to reverse it, I get a third blue dot and then the pan/crop goes all over Gods' Creation.
I can set keyframes all day long. The issue is getting the crop to 'line up' with the keyframes.
I just cannot duplicate what you're doing.

Quote: I know exactly what you want with that 4k video. You want a
mask with a smaller rectangular opening of 1920x1080 that will display
the first 5 sec. on the left side and everything else on the screen will
be black.

NO! I want the crop to fill the entire screen.

The crop does not have to be exactly 1080x1920. It will probably be larger. But the produced video will be 1080, so the crop will merely be downsampled to 1080.

Watch the linked video I posted.

OK, let me try to explain what I'm doing.

I work alone, and do not have an Audio Controlled Camera Mount (read, assistant to pan the camera for me while shooting).

So I want to shoot a scene using a wide-angle lens. The scene will include both where I will start out at, as well as where I will end up at.

Then, in post, crop and pan the video.

I want the crop to remain stationary for a certain time, then the crop to pan across the scene (the portion where I am walking across the scene), and then stop panning. Then the crop will remain in place.

No matter what I do with PD14, I am forced to zoom. I can only crop straight into the scene. I cannot pan the crop across it. If I do, the crop will change size and effectively zoom as well.
Because I need the crop......... to pan across the scene.

If I crop part of the video then produce it, the part I want to PAN INTO will not be available.
I don't have a "Crop Video" option. Tutorial must be for a different version.

PD14 FORCES a zoom during the crop.
PD14 causes the pan to zoom.

Maybe I'm not explaining this very well.

I do not want the pan through the entire video.... only the center portion of it.

I want part of the crop to remain stationary. Then the crop to pan across the scene. Then stop and remain stationary.
NO ZOOM.

I DO NOT want to zoom.

I want to CROP.

Yeah, you can call it zoom, but zoom means the crop changes during the clip. I don't want that. I want to crop of the original file to remain the same.
It crops AND zooms. And it does so over the entire video. I don't want to do either. I want to crop then entire video. And pan during that crop.

I don't want to zoom, but PD14 will automatically zoom when I crop. There are no options to turn off the zoom.
I know what cropping is. I've been shooting film since 1965, so this ain't my first rodeo.

OK, so I "added 'something' to the main track" and inserted the video I want to edit to the second track.

NOW WHAT?
What am I supposed to do with the video in the second track that I cannot do if the video is in the first track?
I can only crop and zoom. PD14 won't let me do anything else.

I don't see how adding another video track is going to solve anything.
I'm cropping 4k video. My end aim is a 1080p video, so cropping and filling the screen is no problem.

I don't want two video tracks, just one.
I'm sure this has been asked before, but given most forums have crappy search functions, I'll just go ahead and ask.

I'm needing to combine both a crop and a pan in a video clip. For instance, let's say I have a 15-second video. For the first 5 seconds, I want to crop down to the left side of the video. For the next 5 seconds, I want to crop AND PAN across the video to the right. And for the final 5 seconds, crop to the right side of the video.

In short, I want to edit a wide-angle scene to mimic someone using a camera on a tripod..... not touching the camera for 5 seconds, then panning to the right for 5 seconds, then stop panning and continue recording for 5 seconds.

It seems PD14 is required to zoom when you crop. I do not want any zooming. Just crop and pan.

I hope this makes sense.
It's not due to the recorder turning off during times of silence. It's not set up to do that.

It's a function of PD14. When I synch the camera audio with the recorder audio, both play back identically.

But when I zoom in or out on the timeline, the tracks become unsynched.
Anyone? Anyone?

Beuhler? Beuhler?
