Is there any advantage in recording above 720p if the final formal is a standard DVD

I have done a search on this, and haven't found a clear answer.

My cameras can record at 720/25 and 1080/50. There will be advantages in processing in PD in 720 rather than 1080, but I don't want to see too much quality loss.

yes. but it's you.

basic rule of your thumb... always use highest resolutions to lower with adequate bitrates.

and remember this rule - garbage in garbage out.

for example, yours.

take 1080/50(i'm assuming it's FPS) and downscaled to 720x480 8Mb/sec DvD. which is okay.

change mind later and say produce Blu-ray(1080 17-28Mb/sec) and you don't lose alot!

however, the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

try both ways, 720 & 1080 to 480, and see which one you'd like...

if you have any shoulda, woulda, coulda later then shoot at 1080/50 FHD.

if it's a wedding, you better shoot that in 1080 FHD!

if it's for your nephews and nieces then 1080 FHD!

and it's for your girlfriends then 720 HD. why? well female subjects doesn't like imperfections...

oh happy happy joy joy

'garbage in garbage out'

p.s.

Panny GH4 users shoot at 4K/100Mb/sec resolution and downscaled 1080/44Mb/sec for extra details... 'no bridge too far'

Well, you can crop (to zoom in on specific parts) without inflating resolution…

Yep.... crop, zoom, straighten and even distortion control will delete data and end up with a lower-resolution result.

I typically shoot 4k/720p (Sony a6300 allows recording both of the same scene). I use the 720p for editing, then swap in the 4k file for final production.

Thanks for the feedback. 1080 it is. Now to decide if MP4 or AVCDH! Sony AX53 camera / 4 Panasonic HC-V270 cameras / PD14 / I7-6700 /
