H.264 MP4 is the most supported video format now. You can play it on a PC, Mac, iPhone, Android and most smart TV natively.
If you would like simply extract the audio from the video, just put the video on timeline and then entering the "Produce" tab. In Produce tab, choose Standard 2D->Audio file (the notes icon) and pick M4A as the audio format. The audio codec is AAC and most devices should suppport the format. PowerDirector no longer supports produce a MP3 audio anymore.
Little did I know. Thanks a lot.

Although I used Power Director 7&8 for some years, PD17 is new to me, and the circumstances of my videos have changed, too. I look at the Produce page and am confused. I want to produce 1) a video I can fit on a flash drive and be able to be viewed on either a PC or an Apple device. 2) an .MP3 recording I have stripped from the video. In the first case I used to just make DVDs which was fine for everybody. Not any more. In the second case there was a 'separate sound from video' or the like in the context menu on the edit page. Now I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks in advance if someone can assist me with these problems.

Thanks Barry the Crab and Milos 1. I succeeded using Milos' suggestion. the detail made it easy, especially the 'two notes'. I then used format factory to change the file.
I hope you're right about PD17 being so good since for me PD7 and PD8 suffered serious problems and never got over them. The program crashed very often and didn't save correctly so that next time you opened the project there would always be a blank clip, sometimes 6 of them, usually the video missing but the audio still there. Since the missing clip or video was just an edited piece, it was a challenge and a waste of time to figure out how to reconstruct it from the original.
The partial workaround to avoid crashes was to save after every small action. Automatic saving was nearly useless. It also took hours to create the .pds files.

Hello friends,
Until now I had PD 8 but I just downloaded PD17.
I want to remove the audio track from my video for the purpose of converting it to an .mp3 file which I intend to type a transcript from. I easily separated the audio and video tracks and deleted the video but how do I remove the audio track from the program so I can then convert it? I can't tell what kind of file it currently is.
Any assisstance would be appreciated.

Hi everybody,
I have PD 8 installed. I have a finished video, a complex educational one with about 85 clips and many adjustments to sound level. I'm now not happy with the music, which I took almost randomly from the very limited SmartSound selection provided with the program, just because I like the way it adapts to any length video.
1.Can I change the music to another SS track or some other music, without changing the volume level adjustments I have made? I want to avoid re-editing the whole sound track.
2. This video will be posted to Youtube, which I see offers many free music clips, too, but of course they are of fixed length. If I used one, must I just tack them together, eg 2 minutes, repeat, etc., or is there are a clever way to alter the length of the music clip, as in SS? How do other people adapt music to a certain length video?
Thanks

Thanks for that, I will try it out. I hope it also allows the new music on the several pages.

Hi Cranston,
Thanks a lot. Gee, you are cute!

Are patches and updates available for PD8 without buying a new program? If so, how are they installed?

When I was making a menu for a DVD of my production, the default music couldn't be replaced. The line said it had, and I had ticked 'apply to all pages' (my menu had many pages). The default music was still there for the first page, then silence for all the other pages ('scenes'). I had clicked 'save'. Any suggestions?

I have used PD7 and 8 for a while, but in the last months I have had this problem a lot, esp on a very long video (with c 90 clips) i was editing. I tediously had to reload the clips and re-edit them. Generally (but not always) the audio was still there (mine were interviews), so that helped me reconstruct the editing process. I think it's related to whether the 'shadow file is ready'. I found it helps to save very often--after every edit. I also haven't heard of autosave files. My clips also hadn't been renamed or moved.
