Random clips become uneditable after saving, closing and reopening PD

I am having an issue with some clips becoming uneditable for no apparant reason. The options to use all editing tools disappear, but only on what appears to be randome clips in small groups. Customer support told me to unlink the video and audio and then relink them for a fix. This did not work. The editing tool options do reappear when the audio and video are unlinked, but that doesn't help me. What could be the real issue, what is going on? I am not doing any linking/unlinking on my own that I know of. I am using minimal transitions, I often manipulate the speed of my clips, have two video tracks, a text track and a music track that I am using. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome back.
I cannot see clearly, your images are not high enough resolution when I zoom in. Can you attach a higher res image?
Folks here will help, maybe you found a new bug. Please give it another try on the images. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Barry -

Maybe it's the return of that old bug - the one where you have to unlink the video & audio in order to use some of the tools.

Chazms -

What happenes if you right click on one of the offending clips - select Unlink video and audio - then click on the video potion. Do those editing buttons re-appear?

Cheers - Tony

Ynotfish,

Yes they do, but then if I change the speed or trim the clip the audio file becomes useless.

Barrythecrab,

How do I do that? My picture is a much higher resolution photo, but it uploaded at about 1/10 of its resolution.

You attach the file to the forum, Use PostReply button, Blue Attachments button below the Text box.

Or you can put the high resolution image on a file sharing site, then paste the link on the forum.

This is the error PD13 unlink audio and video, note the timeline separation between video and audio, this does not enable editing tools. The interim solution is to unlink video from audio, can have side effeitos.

Note: In the case of the project, ready no problem at all.

To avoid reaching this situation try to make your project at once, do not close and reopen your project that's where the error occurs.

Yes, I did notice that. It does not happen while I am working on it, only after reopening it. Even if I put my computer to sleep with the program open it remains fine. What compounds the problem is that PD often freezes on me, most of the time for only a few seconds but about once or twice during an editing session it freezes and does not recover, which then makes me force close it and open it again where the problem occurs.

I see you are using shadow files.
Are they getting corrupted when the computer freezes?
Next time you might want to try open the PD then delete all temp files.
Settings > General > Manually Delete, Select all and delete.
Then open the project again and wait for all shadow file to show up as green again in the media content.

Also - is the project and video files on an internal or external (usb drive)?

This does seem like the old unlink issue, but that was addressed back in PD12 and it shouldn't be happening in PD13. Can you post your version number? It should be *2604* for the latest released patch. You can also try the latest beta version, which is *2822*

Also, take a look at this *video* I made a year ago which shows a workaround if your clips break. In my experience, the issue was caused by having a high frame rate in the project settings (50 or 60fps), and you can try setting that to 24, 25 or 30 to see if that helps. Shadow files or video drivers were not the cause.

I am using 2604. I tried 2822 and it would crash while loading every time I tried to open it. This problem still persists. Every time I save and close the program when I reopen it all the files I was previously working on no longer have editing tools as a an option.

If 2822 crashed you might have gotten a bad download, so maybe you could try again. Before you do that, have you tried using lower project frame rates as mentioned in my last post?

Not yet. I'll try that next. I watched your video. I now see what is happening. Same thing is happening to me, but it doesn't matter when in the timeline that it occurs. It seems to happen towards the beginning of the last section of my video I edited before saving and closing. Why has this issue not been fixed if it was an issue in PD12?

Up until now, I thought it was a closed issue. There may have been a few other people who've seen it in PD13, but as far as I can tell it's not affecting anywhere near the number of users as the one in PD12.

Let's see if the lower frame rate work-around will work for you.

Ok. Tried it, and most of the clips that were just uneditable are now editable. It is still affecting some clips, but probably 80-90% less. Maybe this will also help with the freesing problem?

It certainly might. The good news is that you still should be able to produce to 50p or 60p even with the project frame-rate set lower.

You may also need to remove the still-damaged clips from the timeline, save the project and exit PD, then reopen it and put them in again to be able to edit them from that point on.

You have been so much help. Thank you. I have also been working with Cyberlink support and just sent in a bunch of files and logs they requested. Perhaps they will find something. You are helping me get some work done tonight though, thanks.
