Shimmering Scrolling Credits - SOLVED!
[Post New]
Adrian...following that path I don't have an appdata or roaming but there's a cyberlink folder in user...but no auto save in there anywhere.

I can't find an Auto Save folder anywhere...

I don't know that it would do any good. It very well could have been corrupted when I saved it last because I had been working on the scrolling text after I last opened it and hadn't looked at the rest of the timeline... It wasn't long after that last save that I noticed a couple files duplicated that I pulled back on size and then saw multiple missing files and duplicates...so I'm afraid I saved the corrupted file..that's why It came back up after I rebooted. Dustie -

Sounds like you're having a terrible time with it.

There MUST be an Auto-Save folder at the location Adrian posted...
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\CyberLink\PowerDirector\11.0\AutoSave - that is your best chance of avoiding re-doing all that work.

Do you have auto save checked in Preferences? or unchecked?

We have rather shifted the topic. but we'll get back to shimmering scrolling credits...

Tony,

I have two choices under C:/Users and that's Asus and Public...

I don't have an AppData choice under C:/Users/Asus - the other choice is C:/Users/Public and there is a Cyberlink there with all my Public Folders but no Auto Save anywhere in there.

I've tried a file search by typing C:/Users/Asis/Appdata/ and as soon as I get past Asis it says No Files Found...Same with searching appdata in the Cyberlink folder by typing in C/Users/Public/Cyberlink/Appdata... as soon as I get past Cyberlink there's no files found.

I just don't have an appdata/roaming..

And yes, auto save is checked and it does auto save because there's been times it's crashed when it would ask me if I'd like to open the latest saved file...

I've searched Auto Save..in many different ways. It has to be there...but named differently?

Ah - it's probably hidden!

You can fix that in Control Panel > Folder Options

Now why would my computer want to hide anything from little ole me? Think it was that time I deleted many of my important .dll files and spent a whole week trying to replace them?

Well, changed the preference in control panel, but still no appdata/roaming under either C:/users/asis or C:/users/public

Although I would like to find that folder, it's not so important now. I think this was my PD11's way of telling me that I was fumbling around too much and to slow down and smell the roses.

After about 3 hrs of fitfull sleep I opened my file from a couple of days ago. I've been tweaking, burning, watching, taking notes and tweaking some more for the last week. I still have all my notes, as well as a week's worth of practice behind me, so I've been making corrections (without the fumbling) to this version so fast that I've gotten nearly half way through in just the last hour. The program hasn't crashed once and it's working faster then my last version was by far.

The way I look at this is it's just more practice... and very productive practice at that. So within another hour I should be back at where I was when this thread started...

HOW DO I FIX THE SHIMMERING TEXT PROBLEM?

LOL!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions and help.

And I'd still like to find the appdata/roaming path to that non hidden file. Think I'll need to reboot before the once hidden files are now non hidden from me?

Hi Dustie

I've been following your trials and tribulations with this issue - poor you

I don't know why the shimmering text exists but can you try the following:

As your final destination is DVD

1. Produce project to MPEG-2 DVD HQ with NO scroll titles title template.

2. Import this Produced file into the timeline and USE the scroll tities.

3. View this Produced on your computer. All good? If yes, use this Produced file in a new project to burn your DVD.

Happy editing

There's another thing worth considering here Dustie, apart from production options.

PD's scrolling credits have been jerking their way up & across the screen for as long as I can remember.

Have you though about using a different effect? Fade in & out?

I can't remember what version of PD this was - but it's still the same now http://youtu.be/7-MVDHJt8Wc

Tony, that might work if my credits weren't so long...

You see, I've a cast of characters that make quite a long list... and then there's the production credits (much shorter but still needed). I think any thing beyond scrolling would make it harder to read (as if anyone is going to sit through the credits...but they might I suppose).

I'm burning a disc now, using Carl's idea. I cut off the end of my recently produced movie and created new scrolling credits for it then went strait to burn so the the credits will bypass the produce stage. Hopefully that will keep them looking smooth as they do in the preview window before produced.

CAST OF CHARACTERS
(in order of appearance
if they behaved themselves)

Great Blue Heron
Belted Kingfisher
Red Earred Slider Turtle
Common Musk Turtle
Damselflies
Whitetail Deer
Prothonatary Warbler
Black Vultures
Raccoon Family
Mink
Spotted Sandpipers
Midland Water Snake
Mud Dauber Wasp
Eastern Bluebird
Cricket Tree frog
Pileated Woodpecker
Eastern Chipmunk
Wood Ducks
Great Horned Owl
Cormorant
Red Shouldered Hawk
Prairie Lizard
Red Foxes
Least Skipper Butterfly
Grey Squirrel
Green Heron
Canada Geese
Cliff Swallows
Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly
Red-wing Blackbird Female
Forester's Tern
Red Squirrel
Canada Geese Goslings
Dragonfly
Grebes
Mallard Ducks
Merganser Ducks
Louisiana Thrush
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Rough Green Snake
Hercules (Rhinoceros) Beetle
Swallowtail Butterfly
Carolina Wren
Old Bachelor Butterfly
Bobcat
Winter Wren

Now you see why I want the scroll to work. If it's not one thing, it's another. After I posted the credit's here, I noticed a miss spelling so had to correct it and am now burning a new video. Good thing I'm using RW discs for this stage.

Hi,
That is some lengthy set of credits...looks like a 'Who Who' of a sanctuary. That may be the reason. I would break it into two columns and see if that helps (don' forget that video footage text isn't rendered like windows does it it is converted to digital
representation.

Dustie -

You must spend a lot of time on the lake & in the woods! Great work capturing all that.

Attached is an easy to achieve possibility (in project form)... maybe for future productions.

Thanks James...I'll give that a try. The sending it to DVD with out rendering the scrolling text didn't work. It still shimmered.

Frustrates me that it doesn't shimmer in the preview window..it's beautiful and smooth there. So why does it shimmer when it's sent directly to burn on DVD from there? grrrrrrrr.

Questions... if I created a scrolling text feature file in Adobe After Effects (a program I bought a couple of years ago and never used) could I import it into my movie timeline?

I know AF has a high learning curve, but surely a simple text roll with a transparent background couldn't be that difficult to make, could it? Dustie

Tony, I do like the slide in from right and left for the list of critters, but tried it with the rest of the credits and it didn't come out right. Thank you for doing that for me...maybe another project is right! ;

I think I'd like to exhaust all avenues of the scroll idea first for this movie though. I just like the way it looks...except for the shimmer of course.

And yes, I have spent a lot of time in the woods and on my boat. I estimate I've nearly 25 hours a week hunting critters to film in the out of doors for at least 5 months in 2012 and easily that much (more in the last two weeks) in the last 2 months in post production. Sure does seem like a lot of time, but I had a lot to learn! LOL!

I'm semi retired, giving me more hours to work on my hobby of wild life videography and photography. And I'm having an awesome time...even though I get pretty frustrated when I have days like today!

Hi Dustie

Have you Produced your project first then imported this Produced file into a new project and then added the scroll text.

Also; if you Produce it first you can use this Produced file in AE if you want. Happing editing

Neil, yes, that was my latest try, and it didn't work. It did sound like a promising idea though. It looks perfect in the preview window on the main work page, so I thought surely if sent directly to DVD it wouldn't pick up the shimmer...but alas, it looks just the same as it did when I produced the scroll along with the movie.

I'm hoping I can create a file in AE for just the credits, and that it can be imported into PD11. Is this possible?

Thanks for trying to help... Dustie

Hi Dustie,

Like Neil, I've also been following your trials and tribulations with this issue.
Probably can't give you a brilliant suggestion that'll work, but I can give you
an answer about AE. You can produce (render to file) a scrolling credit in AE and bring it in to PD.
(Be sure to of course produce to a format PD accepts. In AE, you can produce alpha channel, but
as I recall, PD will not accept it.)

Nina
Just something.

Thanks Nina.. So don't produce Alpha Channel in AE. I figure tonight I'm going work to clean up a couple things in the video itself, then tomorrow work on nothing except the credits.

Hopefully I'll find an AE tutorial for beginners to create scrolling text.

The reason I've not used AE thus far, is because I just know it's going to have a pretty big learning curve and I need to have my plate clear... or at least clearer then it's been for awhile..

Thanks again! Dustie

Hi Dustie,

Just to stir the pot a bit more. And not that this going to help much. But, I’ve always thought that scrolling titles in PD had one issue or another since version 4(?). However, I copied your credits above and applied them to some stock 1280x720 footage, by pasting (Ctrl+V) them into Title Designer and chosing the standard Arial font. Here’s my results.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0B8xHsSFDY

When viewing on Youtube using the 720p viewing setting on the bigger player, it’s a bit “jittery” and not completely smooth. But maybe not as “flickery” as the results shown in your Youtube link.
I did notice in my testing that fonts with narrow portions do tend to want to flicker more than fonts of a consistent size/thickness. But I’ll do a little more testing, and report back if I find a solid solution.

As to your earlier mention of losing some of your assets when you re-opened your project, I offer this Project Management tip for what it’s worth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAOnn8g0C_o
Since using this method, in combination with using “Save As” often, I haven’t had anything go missing in years, and have not had to rely on the Auto Save feature.

Good Luck.
