Hi Brent,
No need for the beverage... just the thought counts

OK, please look up the guide info I've provided below. Best I can do.

Screenshot(s) is the important one, though the diagnostic should also be attached.

As long as you use the same release/version of PD you should have no problem with opening existing projects - problems have been reported when using differing releases and, in general, forward compatibility (earlier releases opening later projects) is usually not supported, whilst retro-compatibility is more commonly supported (but not guaranteed).

Take backups of anything critical.

Don't forget to take backups of anything critical

Best practice is to take backups of anything critical

No problem opening my projects. It's the editing that is the hang up. There have been many times when the program stopped running and I had to restart.

Dafydd
I know just enough to know that I am not a techie guy in relation to your knowledge. Even with the directions on attachements, I can't grasp on how to get the diagnostics and the screen shot to you. The filename field won't let me amend the address to add -DxDiag.txt.
Any other clues on how I can get this info to you.
Thanks
Brent

Hi Brent -

This might help you with the screen shot.

http://www.youtube.com/user/ynotfish77#p/u/10/uz4KbvDA8Vw

In the video, I used the Win7 Snipping Tool but you can also use the PrtScn key to take a screen shot - paste it into a graphics editor - save it - then add as an attachment in your reply.

Once you've done the DxDiag, save it as text & you can attach that too.

Hope that helps - Tony

So here is the screen shot. Thanks Tony for the help on it. I had no idea what y'all were talkin about or how to get a screen shot.
Now for the DxDiag - I have no idea how to get that. Any guidance will be appreciated.

You have given me a bit of an education today. I think this is the DX Diagnostic info you are looking for. Now that I know where & how to get it, I should be able to respond quicker.
Thanks again

Brent -

The DxDiag instructions are on the page Dafydd referenced above http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/7958.page#32766

When it opens up, click on Run 64-bit DxDiag - save as a text file & attach it, as you attached the images.

The information in the images provides the basic system & display information:
Win 7 (64-bit) - Core i7 CPU 860 @ 2.8GHz - 8MB RAM - ATI Radeon HD 5700 series (Driver date is 28.9.2010 - check for updates at http://www.amd.com/au/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx

Updating the drivers may resolve your issue.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Brent,

You are getting great help, but I thought I would jump in here to give some advice because the others are in a different time zone and I see that you are on line now.

Your PC is more than adequate to edit the footage you are importing....my opinion anyways.

The screen shot you added shows that you have what is fondly called "Shadow Edit" files being generated. See the little film strips on the thumbnail images in the media room? Some of them are Green and some of them are Yellow. Green means that the shadow edit files have completed....and the Yellow color menas they are still being generated.

What does this mean to you? Go into your preference settings and turn the "Shadow Files" off.

Shadow edit files are used when you have a less powerful computer. These files are generated when you are using High Definition video clips. They are a smaller and lower quality version of your High Definition clips. They are intended to be used by PD8 during the editing process making editing go smoother. But you don't need to be using them. Your PC is powerful enough and will work without them.

But......they do take some valuable PC resources to generate them and they can take a long time to generate, especially if you are using large files. So you are having trouble playing back the clips in the preview because they haven't finished generating....the Yellow film strip is still visible from your screenshot. So you are trying to edit your project while your CPU is crunching away at generating those files. This may be causing your problem.

To turn Shadow Edit files off:

1.Open up Power Director
2.Click on the Directors Chair Icon - Upper left corner
3. Select....EDIT....Select Preferences
4. Select the GENERAL tab
5. UNCHECK the box.......enable file processing to enable....blah blah blah.

Now close PD....then reopen PD and open your project...see if this makes a difference.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi Brent,

One other thing....I seemed to recall a similar problem from the past.....can't find it at the moment....

If shutting down the Shadow Edit files creation in your PREFERENCES doesn't improve your situation:

Then you might then try turning them back ON....but wait until ALL of the video clips in the MEDIA ROOM ALL have the little green film strip on them. Once they are all generated properly, then your CPU will be able to focus on the editing task.

Now I am out of ideas.

Regards,

Kevin

Kevin -

That's a perfect example of the worth of the forum - different perspectives. I didn't even notice the Shadow Edit files!

Agreed about the system being more than adequate.

Hi Brent,
I endorse Kevin's suggestions regarding deactivating the Shadow Edit files.

A little while ago Kevin and I chatted over Skype and I ran through a list of what I look for in a screenshot and why I ask for one so often. - a picture tells the story.

I would have liked the screenshot to have been of the whole of the edit workspace - that would have given me more to see and to check.

I have attached one of your images which I have edited - Just so you know how to create a diagnostic file.

Great followup to all who are helping.
FYI - I downloaded an updated version of DirectX 9 which showed some updates post my PD purchase.

Regarding the screen shot, did you mean all 10 minutes? Or certain portions?

I've attached the DXdiag. Hope this is what you're looking for. If not lemme know.

should I look into updating the BIOS of the card?

After looking over my list of symptoms, I did not mention that the video stoppage occurs after each clip regardless of review size. Most times. But sometimes both audio and video continue to play.

What about uninstalling / installing PD? If that won't affect ongoing and completed projects, I'll do thar right away.

Any thoughts on a software conflict with the Panasonic camera software HD Writer?

Thanks
Brent

Here is the screen shot I think that you wanted.
As you have already seen I am slow on many upticks but I'm more than willing to learn. This is uncharted territory for me.
What's interesting is that although I've been doing these soccer videos for the last 5 or so years, it never fails that some failure has almost invariebly cropped up 4-6 weeks before the team party. At least 3 or 4 of the past years I have gone to the last day before producing and making copies for the girls. Talk about burning the midnight oil!!
Anyway onward and upward
Thanks
Brent

Hi all
I just noticed another symptom tied to the video stopping at the end of each clip. I changed the preview to small screen and to non real time (muting the volume). I also expanded the timeline and tested the divider line area. The video stops for .2 of a second or so at each line then continues. There doesn't seem to be a smooth transition between clips that I've seen in other projects.
Maybe another piece of the puzzle, Does this indicate maybe a need for a different video card?

Thanks
Brent

Here is another screen shot showing audio sections: one with a straight line the other with the sound waves.
Throughout the timeline, the area with the straight line allows the video to continue to the next clip without stopping. When the video gets to a clip with sound waves, it stops but the audio continues.

Another indicator of a sound card problem? Or updating BIOS?

Wel now go figure. I just went to the area of the screen shot clips and it proved my theory wrong. I don't get it. So disregard my previous post. But that theory was right at the time but now it's not.

Here is another DxDiag. If you look at the notes, it says that a file is not digitally signed etc. Display devices show the mode as 1280 x 1024 32 bit. Could this be an issue since my computer is a 64 bit?

Hello all
I just talked with atechie friend and he asked about the frames per second settings in PD. I looked it up and it is set at 30fps. My camera is at 60fps. Could this have an affect?

Thanks I think so. I've been trying to do some trouble shooting today as you can see in hopes it brings as many of the puzzle pieces together as can be.

Hi Brent,

I shoot all my video at 60fps and have no issue importing into PowerDirector, my settings for PD are 30fps NTSC, but you do need a high powered system and maybe 1gb graphics card for smooth playing

Robert

Just looked at your computer specs, you have sufficient power and card
