Video stops but audio continues during editing

I use PD8 and have used it for around 1 1/2 years. Recently I've had problems with clips I have brought from the library to the timeline. As I review the clips in the timeline, the audio continues to play but the video stops after less than 1 second. Then after 10-15 seconds, the video and audio starts up where the last audio ended. This causes extensive delays while editing.
Any ideas what causes this and how to fix?

Hi Brent -

You've not had this trouble before?

What are the properties (format/profile) of the clips you're editing?

What are the specs of your PC - GPU, CPU, RAM etc?

It sounds like your graphics card is having trouble processing the video...

Cheers - Tony

Have you updated your video drivers?

As Tony pointed out it sounds like your graphics card can not keep up with the Video.

Maybe your computer is not powerful enough. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. As in the past been out of town quite a bit.
We bought a Dell Studio XPs 81oo 1-24-10 with Windows 7 64 bit.
It came with:
Intel R Corel (TM) i7 CPU 860@2.8 GBz
RAM 8 GB
ATI Radeon HD5700 Series
673 GB free of 1 TB
I also updated 14 drivers through Driver Wizard this morning.

Much of the used space is video projects I've made. This issue has only started to show up in the last month asI started putting 10 minute videos on YouTube. So maybe I need a newer graphics card afterall.
If so, any suggestions?
Much Thanks
Brent

Did you also buy a new camera? Perhaps your clips are now too "heavy".
Have you tried to lower the preview quality?
Are you adding fixes and effects?
Are you defragged?

I see you have the ATI Radeon HD5700 Series
Video card. The current driver is version Catalyst 10.9.

The best place to download the ATI driver is from ATI.

I reduced the preview size and also changed from real time to non-real (muted the audio). The video would play through but would have short stops between scenes. I have not added any fixes, transitions or effects. I haven't defragged yet but will tonight.
Not sure about the swallow thing though. Must be a new or for that matter an old computer tech term that a non techy guy couldn't know.

Anyway, any other tips will be helpful.
Thanks

Here is a post I found on the net. I didn't even know video cards had a bios. Just more info to confuse you.

"I bought Dell XPS 8100 desktop that came with the ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series video card. I had some problems updating a BIOS on that video card after couple failures. Dell tech support sent me a replacement GeForce GT 240 card from nVidia. In the meantime my friend helped me to update the BIOS on the ATI card and now it seems to work just fine. So now I have dilemma which card to keep. Any suggestions?"

"Albatross!! Albatross!! Albatross!!"

"What flavour is it?"

(I actually saw that sketch in a live theatre performance in 1970 when I was a student. The albatross was on a stick, on the tray, and there was no ice cream)

Confusion and bewilderment are what I'm feeling about bios. I don't know a thing about it. Should I get a pro tech person to help with this?
I'm getting to serious time crunch as I just got word that my daughter's year end soccer party is 12-9 and the girls for 5 years have really looked forward to it.
I'll contact Dell in the meantime.
Again much thanks for your input.

I feel your pain and pressure. What gets me is the sudden poor performance of your machine, after working fine.
Virus? Graphics card? I was hoping to hear from our other friends here. Send Dell my email quote and maybe they'll help, or send a new card! HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I think the key to troubleshooting this type of "was OK but now isn't" issues is to recognise that it is probably caused by a change in your system. 2 basic possibilities hardware or software.

Unless you've specifically changed any hardware, the other main possibility is hardware failure. It seems unlikely (but possible) and is really difficult to diagnose. Usually easiest by swapping components with new/good ones or running a bare bones system and adding components back in one by one.

Much more likely is a change to the software environment, most typically (unless some form of virus) installing a new piece of software, which is causing a conflict, or updating drivers/software.

Again diagnosis (particularly if autoupdates have been applied) is difficult - in principle work to getting back to the previous working state by uninstalling etc. However, it does require knowledge of what has been changed and that may not be known. My own experience is that I always try new drivers but if I experience problems, I often roll back to a known earlier release - the newest is not always the best!

Personally, with PD, my first step is always to update quicktime and then uninstall/install PD. Not proven, but I have an impression that PD is particularly sensitive to certain software updates and seems to like to be installed after such updates rather than before.

Cheers
Adrian

Hi all
Thanks again for your input. I have been following your suggestions but no real change yet.

Baryddth - I thought more about your new camera question. I have a Panasonic HDC TM700 w/1080i @60 frames per second. That probably addresses your "too heavy" question. I looked at several finished videos where I used aCanon min DV camera. No issues. I initially tried to capture video from this camera using PD but it would not recognize the camera. So, I captured using Panasonic's HD Writer then imported into PD.
I also wonder if there might be a software conflict w/HD writer? If that's possible, should I move it to my external hard drive?

I also called Dell last night about replacing the video card. Net result - the "tech" tried to sell me a $240 1 yr warranty.

Adrian - I installed updated Quick Time and restarted my computer. The only change was the preview stopped the video between the 3rd & 4th clips. If I uninstall / install PD, will that affect any other completed projects or in process projects?

that's all I can think of for now. Much thanks
Brent

Hi all
I've been following your suggestions and no real change.

Baryddth - I thought more about your new camera question. I now use a Panasonic HDC TM700 w/1080i @60 frames per second. That couls explain the "too heavy."
I tried to capture video using PD but it wouldn't recognize the camera. So I captured using Panasonic's HD Writer software then imported into PD. This leads to another possible issue in that there could be a software conflict here. If so, should I move HD Writer to my external Hhard drive?
I also looked at some projects where I used a Canon mini DV camera. No issues. So maybe it's a video card issue.

I called Dell last night to folwup on them sending me a new card. Net result - the "tech?" tried to sell me a 1 yr $240 warranty. So no help.

Adrian - I installed the updated Quick Time and there was a small difference. The video now stops between the 3rd & 4th clips on the timeline.
If the uninstall / install of PD won't affect existing projects, completed or in process, I'll do that as soon as I hear from you.

I looked on the internet for some info on updating card BIOS and found this sight that says it is a very viable option. "Beginner's Guides to Flashing Motherboard."

Again much thanks for your input.

Brent,

I hope I can ask a few simple questions.

What build version of PD are you using?
Please can I see the content of your project - screenshot?
What Preview setting are you operating at?

I've skimmed through the thread and if I've missed the information I apologise.

Please see the reason for the request below.

Thanks

Thanks Dafydd
I'm using PD Ultra 8 build 3022. I checked the downloads and this looks like it's current.
Not sure if the attachment is what you're looking for but it's the project.
Preview setting - I've used all 3 with the same results.

Need your guidance in getting you the diagnostic.

I need to be gone for several hours and will check back later.
Thanks and I'm buyin the beer or beverage of your favorite choosing if our paths ever cross.
Brent

Hi Brent,
No need for the beverage... just the thought counts

OK, please look up the guide info I've provided below. Best I can do.

Screenshot(s) is the important one, though the diagnostic should also be attached.

Dafydd
