Bug: Chroma Key removes primary colours from intermediate colours

Chroma Key seems to be broken...

I have an image with the colours Red, Blue and Yellow in it, and a Green background. When I use Chroma Key to remove the Green background, the Yellow is discoloured to a semi-transparent dark red.

I have created a test image, with six colour swatches based on RGB colours:
Red: 255, 0, 0
Yellow: 255, 255, 0
Green: 0, 255, 0
Turquoise (?): 0, 255, 255
Blue: 0, 0, 255
Magenta (?): 255, 0, 255

(?) - means I'm not sure if that's the correct colour name

When you chroma key with any of the primary colours (Red, Green, Blue), it incorrectly removes that element of the colour from the intermediate colours.

When you chroma key with the intermediate colours (Yellow, Turquoise, Magenta), it works properly.

Windows 8.1, Intel i5-2500k, NVidia GTX 660 with 335.23 driver

Tested in PD 11 here, chroma keying any one of the six, using the color picker, had no visible affect on the others.

Are your "intensity" and "hue" tolerances set at 15 and 10 respectively?

I just tested with Davids sample and I am using PD12 and it is doing what he is describing. When I click on Yellow or Magenta nothing is affected accept the color I clicked on. But if I click on any of the 4 other colors on the sample chart it affects something else on the chart as well.

Green - affects yellow and turquoise.
red - affects yellow and magenta
blue - affects magenta and turquoise
turquoise - affects green and yellow
yellow - no affect on other colors
turquoise - no affect on other colors

I am using PD12 and the latest non-beta version.
I am a newbie, so I really no nothing about the Chroma Key, outside of what has been described, but I thought I would post I can at least duplicate the issue David appears to be having.

Hi,
The chroma key on masking is working ok here, don't forget that the colors are mixtures of RGB (red Green and blue) so any shades of colors are a % of those colors and when chroma keying Green the computer adjust the 'green' even the colors that have a % of that color, till you adjust the chroma key intensity tolerence.
That is my reasoning.

I have to admit, I tried this chart in V11 and got a totally different (correct) chroma-key effect than from my PD12 beta 2824. Something is wrong in 12! HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I see what Philwojo describes, only Yellow and Magenta go black as expected without affecting any other colors.

James1, I agree with what you're saying but I tried moving all the sliders over their full range, and with Yel and Mag, as long as there's at least 0.01 on the Edge sharpness they stay black without affecting any other color. With any of the other colors selected, the controls have a varying degree of darkening on related colors.

Barry, it sounds like you are in a good place to compare PD11 with PD12. Are you saying that in PD11, you're able to completely blank out the selected color and not affect any of the others? What happens if you adjust the slide controls?

It seems that the issue here is whether PD12 is working correctly by removing the specified color from the entire image, or if it's supposed to only remove that color if each pixel exactly matches the desired color setting (within the range of slider values).

Those are two completely different tasks and objectives, and it appears that PD 11 does the second while PD12 does the first. If that's the case, then PD12 isn't doing what it's supposed to!

David14159 you should probably report your issue to Cyberlink tech support directly. Be prepared to upload your very helpful test image and copy the URL of this forum thread in your message. You should hear from them within a day or 2, usually with a request for more info.

I'll just chime in to confirm the issue here. Good find, David!

My results are consistent with Barry's - PD12 exhibits the symptoms David observed, but PD11 does not (behaves more like what is expected). PD12.0.2726.0 and PD120.2824.0 (beta) have the same symptoms.

David - Magenta is right Turquoise should be Cyan. This table might help - http://www.rapidtables.com/web/color/RGB_Color.htm

optodata - Re: PD11: Yes - each colour can be isolated (i.e. chroma-keyed without affecting others). In PD12, once you apply chroma key to (say) Lime, no amount of sliding can bring the yellow back.

Side note - something I learnt in constructing the attached RGB board: in PD12, don't necessarily expect when you take a snapshot of a colour that it will be replicated. In many cases the G(reen) value is dropped by 1.

Cheers - Tony

I wonder, has this been reported yet? Is it video card related, processor, or just screwed up? Curious how it might have happened as it's been working properly for years. Something must have changed. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

The problem exists in PD12 on my machine with both nVidia GTX7xx and Intel HD4600 GPUs. There is no change with the latest Beta 2830 patch, either, but I'd think it's too soon to expect a fix...

Hi Barry,
The issue is being "investigated" by R&D. That's all I know.
