Canon Camcorders Now With Native 24p

Hi all,

Seasoned members who are also Canon users may remember this thread on the Pf24 (24p) function on some of the latest Vixia range and the fact it was not native 24p, instead recording at 60i.

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/10242.page

The latest flagship range of Canon Vixias have hit the market and the HFS21, 20 and 200 now have the ability to shoot in native 24p.

On this side of the pond of course we have the Canon Legria and after selling my HFS100 and HF200, I'm now the very happy owner of the Legria HFS200 and HFM31. The Legria continues to shoot 25p at 50i just as the Vixia continues to shoot 30p at 60i. There is obviously good reason for that and I'm hoping Jeff (JL) will tell us why because it's all a bit above me!

If anyone on the other side of the pond has managed to lay their hands on the Vixia HFS21, 20 or 200 can we have some sample files of the native 24p shooting mode please?

Cheers,

I see that none of these new Canons record at 60p.

How old were your two previous Canon cameras that you replaced? I thought they came out in the last year or so. Is the picture quality/other features that much better to warrant the upgrade? Q9300 2.5 GHz

Hi James,

I've noticed improved performance in low light, and there is a much larger LCD screen that is now also touch screen. The stability programming is also much better, with no sudden jolts when shooting without a tripod in 25p. The HFS200, the upgrade to the HFS100 now has two memory card slots.

I decided to upgrade as the reviews were good and because the HFS100 and HF200 were still considered desirable on eBay, understandable as they are excellent cameras! I had to therefore pay very little extra to upgrade.

Cheers,

I saw this also. I just bought a Canon and it still shoots everything at 60i. I just wish they had an option to shoots AVCHD or MPEG 2 like the Sony's do. __________________________________

Hello from Tucson.....
Andrew you said:

You are right according to the Canon HF10/100 Instruction Manual: (pgs:92,93,122)

So, what does it mean?
When I set the Frame Rate to 24p or 30p, will I get the benefits of 24p or 30p even if those files "are converted and recorded on the memory as 60i "....?

Hi all,

I have had the Canon Vixia HFS21 since April 15th which I find to be a big improvement versus the a Vixia HG21 which it replaced.

With regards to frame rates, perhaps I can explain as condensed from the manual. The HFS records at PF30, PF24 and 24F which is true 24p.

The PF24 is also true 24p, however if combined with the Cinema Mode will then record in 60i. It also states that the PF30 is also progressive. Movies created in the PF mode can't be converted to standard definition using the camcorder. I generally always have with both cameras use only the 24F mode.

Later when I have more time I will give a few more specifics regarding what I think of this camera, or let me know what other questions that you may have.

Hi George,

Very impressed with mine too! Is there any way we could have a sample of your camera's native 24p files? 10 seconds worth of 1920x1080 MXP 24mbps say? Mine is the Legria and only shoots in 25p and 50i so I can't provide them myself!

Dafydd will let you know how to if you are willing!

Hi Andrew,

Yes I would be willing to provide one or more approximate 10 second 24p 1920 x 1080 MXP clips, just let me know how to do it. I assume you want original clips that have been loaded into the computer with no cropping, etc.

I switched mine from the default 60i to PF30 and noticed a big improvement. __________________________________

Luckily this doesn't effect us PAL users as ther are no nasty pulldowns for 25p/50i contianer Richard

And the native 24p doesn't have 'nasty pulldowns' either!

Richard I couldn't have put it better myself!

This is also why (I'm guessing) there is no native 30p on the Vixia either. Like the Legria with 25p there is no adavantage to having native 30p, or so I've read anyway!

Hi all,

As requestd I uploaded 3 original 24F MXP files into the Canon Vixia HFS21 folder, #00079, #00153 and #00165. I am basically a wildlife and nature photographer, so at least 90% of my video's are taken either with the Tele or Wide angle converter attached, thus these 3 video's were taken with the 1.5 TL-H58 mm lens attached which is considerably larger than the 37 mm TL-H37 Tele Converter used on the HG21

Another note is that with either camera recordings made with either the PF24 or PF34 frame rate are converted and recorded on the memory as 60i. Thus only the 24F frame rate gives true 24p which I always use.

Whereas my HG21 was and still is an excellent camera, it in no way compares to the HFS21 after nearly a month of use. One thing I like is the 3.5 inch Touch Screen versus the 2.7 inch on the HG21 and manual navigation. Quality and color wise so far I have not noted much difference, but so far have only viewed the HFS21 on my 24" computer monitor.

What I liked the least was the joystick on the HG21 which was about useless versus the touch screen on the HFS21. With wildlife speed is everything. Whereas the HFS21 is much faster and easier, it also has a custom dial that can be set and used for one of five functions including manual focus which I use it for.

My main fault with the HG21 was the inability to auto focus on small objects such as birds on a limb and the toggle was way to slow and miss many opportunities. In checking with Canon they stated that was the nature of that camera. The instant auto-focus on the HFS21 is slower, but I can focus on smaller objects better plus the custom dial makes it even better, but there is still considerable room for improvement. My only other option I was told would be to go for a professional camera.

There are many other improvements with the HFS21 as well that I like. Again with both I always shoot at the highest quality and 24F frame rate as the desired footage after PD8 is then recorded on Blu-ray which I show to larger audiences using a Sony Blu-ray player and the latest Epson 8500 UB projector on large screens.

For your information I spend 6 months at a wildlife park in Florida as the park wildlife photographer and then the summer months in northern NY doing considerable photography. Prior to the HG21 I was doing still photography with SLR professional cameras and lenses.

Thank you Andrew for your effort here - please may you continue. Obtaining sample footage from members with the newest cameras is really important to test and check out in PD.

George, thank you for the sample files and the correspondence we've had. As James has recently mentioned, a super addition to this thread. Thank you.

Knowing about the cameras which produce the footage we edit, is so important to us all.

I certainly enjoy reading the input by everyone on this thread.

Hi,
That I will do, but someone is going to have to tell me how to go about it, such as inserting the camera photo into the text block as others have. All I can seem to do is to attach as a file.

Hi,

I've just had a look at the native 24p files George uploaded and currently SVRT does not support them. However, the pf24, 30 and 60i will still be supported along with the 50i and pf25 modes on the Legria equivalent.

I'm sure this will be sorted by R&D now we have the all important files.

Nice one George!

Cheers,

Hellooooooooo, der.
I hope I'm not too far off topic here, but when using the Canon HFS21 in any of the 'progressive' modes
(PF24, PF30, and 24F), when panning, I see stutteryness and sluggishness as opposed to near perfect pans using 24 Mbps with 60i.
(I'm just referring to the raw files, not post production files)
