Finished editing video but applying transitions on new project significantly slowing timeline video

I just finished editing video for a new project I'm working on that will be a little over an hour long on PowerDirector 15 (purchased about 18 months ago). Everything seemed fine until I started applying transitions the video yesterday.

Almost immediately upon applying any transition, the video playback on the timeline significantly slows. I can hear the audio on the video proceeding normally but the timeline on the video is lagging signicantly behind, making it very difficult to continue to not only add all the transitions required but other titles, etc. yet to come.

This is the 3rd project I've done on PowerDirector 15 on this computer and I have never experienced this type of problem applying transitions or anything else (Titles, etc.). It has an I7 processor and there appears to be plenty of memory available (system specs below):

Operating System: Windows Home 64 Bit (10.0 Build 16299)
System Model: K501UW - asus
Bios: K501UW.203
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6500U CPU @ 2.50 GHz (4 cpu's), 2.6 GHz
Memory: 16384 MB RAM
Page File: 2973 MB used, 15706 MB available
Direct X version: Directx 12

In Direct X under render, it has the following:

Chip Type: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
DAC type: Intergrated RAMDAC
Device Type: Render Only display device
Approxite Total Memory: 12188 MB
Display Memory (VRAM): 4064 MB
Shared Memory: 8124 MB
Driver Model: WDDM 2.1
Version: 21.21.13.6909

The previous projects I've completed are on this computer and still render at normal speeds on the timeline when I open and view them. I am perplexed as to why my new project is slowing like this with just the application of transitions. I updated the latest patches to PD 15 and have tried everything from turning off the Hardware Acceleration in settings to clicking HD shadow files without any changes. The problem persists regardless of what I've tried.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be? I am very frustrated and discouraged that this is happening given the signficant time I've already spent editing video for this project. Any help is greatly appreciated.

As I said on the other thread to you, the transitions are pushing the processor to the limit. I suspect that the cpu is underpowered for video work See here https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-6500U+%40+2.50GHz&id=2607 You dont say what resolution you are working with, but if it's 4K you will suffer even more.

Try working with shadow files, and you can reduce the preview quality. Working in Non-real time will also help, but the audio will be muted Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Thanks Shadow. If it is a processor issue, why hasn't it been an issue with my previous two projects (similar size)? Did this one push it over the edge or something? The files are from the same sources as my previous projects and are 1080p, not 4k.

Also, I have tried clicking on shadow files and non-real time and the issue persists. I thought an I7 processor was powerful enough for these type of projects. Is there a reason it would have worked fine on this computer and processor with previous projects but not this one? Would freeing up memory be helpful? Any additional insight is very appreciated!

Windows updates, new software installed or updated, hard drive filling up are just some possibilities that come to mind. How about posting your dxdiag results (as a txt file). That might give some clue as to the problem that you've got.

One of my old favourite 'soapboxes' - what happens in the preview window is (IMO) of little consequence. It's there only as a rough guide. What happens when you actually render (produce) your edited video?

Edit -

I just saw your duplicate post in the PDR16 forum. I see you've had a BSOD problem as well as the RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64/Hangs in PDR.

Have you made any recent changes to your hardware perhaps added extra memory?

Have you tried closing all unnecessary applications down before running PDR?

Hi Longedge,

I have not added any memory recently. I have closed out of other programs before running PD but it doesn’t change anything. I haven’t tried rendering the video to Blu-Ray or DVD because the project isn’t that close to being completed. I need to add the transitions, titles, effects, etc first. It is difficult to get get all the other stuff (titles, effects, etc) in the correct spots on each clip when you can’t see it played back in real time on the timeline first.

It is odd because I’ve never had any issues at all like this when applying transitions or anything else in the past on the same computer. I’m not sure but could those things you posted (BSOD, RADAR, etc) be the cause? Would adding any memory help or does it look like things should be fine if I’d had success doing these projects on my computer in the past?

There May have been some auto updates from a Windows,/etc installing but nothing specific I remember other then the patches from PD I downloaded yesterday. I downloaded those after I noticed this problem, however.

Any idea on what to try or where to go from here? Really want to get going on finishing this project but concerned about investing all the time it will require to finish it off not knowing if it will produce accurately in real time or not.

The PDR radar pre leak ( Windows early warning system that system resources are overstretched) and BSOD's made me wonder about recent changes.

I don't have an answer to your problem but my approach to this would be to break your editing down into manageable chunks. I've never been an advocate of doing everything in one fell swoop.

I've just finished a 5 minute video and I made 3 intermediate versions before the final one. The idea of trying to do an hour long video in one go send shivers down my spine smile

Edit - Try highlighting a section of you edited video and render just that to see how it looks. At the end of the day (as the saying goes) why not render overnight and see what the result is like....

I open to breaking the editing down into smaller chunks and doing it that way. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to do that. Can you create new, smaller projects, finish them and then import or add them to other projects? This is a video of a 3 week trip we took to Israel and Jordan so ideally I would like to have all of the video together when I finish it off and burn to a Blu-Ray disc (this is what Ive done 3x in the past).

Also, I am still by no means a PD expert. How would I render the project without burning it to disc to see if it is moving in real time without lag before burning it? It has been well over a year since my last project. Do I just produce it overnight and that will reflect how it will burn to disc? I’ve done all of this before but could use a refresher. Thank you!

1. Yes. If you load a project, move the scrubber (cursor) in the timeline to the desired location and choose "File - Insert Project..."
The selected project will be put in the timeline and the project media will be inserted in the media room.

2. Yes. You can choose "Produce" and then not the "Disc" tab, but the "Standard 2D" tab. Depending on the format you want to burn choose the appropiate format and press the "Start" button on the lower border of the window.
