Transfer from a AVCHD flash camcorder (Panasonic HC-X920)

Hi, I recorded an event two hours long without interrumptions on a SD card 32 GB. If I get the video on my SD reader the file is splitted in four files of 4 gb each, but I cannot join them without losing some audio/video frames. Ok, it depends on the FAT32 format of the SD card. I read that to avoid this I have to import the video keeping the card inside my camera (Panasonic HC-X920) and by connecting it to the PC with a mini USB cable. I did, but while my PC see the device, PowerDirector 14 does not allow me the data import or, better, doesn't display (or highlight, please see the attachment) the possibility to transfer from a HDV camera (while other voices are displayed, such as microphone, external disc etc.). How can I run the connection between PD14 and my videocamera or how can I solve my problem?

Thank you and excuse me for my poor English. Ciao, maxrider

Have you tried first copying the files from your camera to a folder on your computer. That would be the best way to do this.

p.s. - Further to what Barry says in his later post, I take it that you've tried the USB transfer cable that comes with your camera. As I understand it, with that connected and "PC" selected on the camera touchscreen PDR should detect the incoming video automatically when you press play on the camera and then allow you to control the camera directly.

Welcome to our fun forum of volunteers.

Your post was confusing me at first because HDV is the term used for HD videotape cameras, such as my old HV30. Your Panny is an AVCHD flash camcorder, records to SD card or flash memory.

The icon you point to in your image is strictly for importing from an HDV source.

Did your Panny come with import software? It may be necessary to use the included software just for import to your computer to avoid the little missing bits in between the captured files.

Thank you to both of you for your interest and help. Unfortunally I did non solve any problem. First I tried to transfer the recorded video using my SD card reader, then I tried conncting the 'Panny' to the PC through thr original software HD Writer AE 5.0, but the result was the same: in my camera I see 1 video and its 1 thumbnail, but in the PC the copy or transfer creates 4 files .mts of nearly 4 GB each. I confirm that PD14 is completely unresponsive with the camera connected (I bought a new universal cable mini USB because I lost the Panasonic original one). Any other suggestion? Thank you so much!

My approach would be to use the separate video files and put transitions in to emphasise rather than trying to hide the joins. Make a feature of them smile.

There is much truth to that. Editing is a tool to tell a story and you don't need every frame, however sometimes those splits certainly occer when least wanted. I refer back my Panasonic users/service suggestion for camera-specific information, or work around it as Longedge proposes. Please come back with any helpful information you get from Panasonic people that might be shared with our members here. If there is a mechanical or software route around your file continuity issue we would like to know. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

If I cannot solve the problem, I'll follow your suggestion. I have to, but it's not possible to do that in a continuous speech without noticing the trouble.

In a forum in Italy someone suggested me to put the card in the PC card reader and copy the card completely (not only the video file). I tried, but the result was again the splitting in 5 files...

OK, I think to leave in peace PD14 and begin to search some solutions in the Windows 10 and Panasonic world. Of course I'll keep on staying here just hoping in some miracle! If I find a way out I'll post soon! Thank you

Hi,

You face 2 possible issues:

  • the standard FAT32 format for sd cards has a file limit of 4Gb

So, for the future, you could check if the camera can use an sd card formatted under NTSC,

  • the camera might have a 4Gb record limit to preserve compatability.

[ie ]https://suggestionofmotion.com/blog/panasonic-gh4-memory-file-size-limit/]

in which case, nothing to be done, I'm afraid.

For your current issue:

Using something like mpeg streamclip to join the clips might give a better result, but it may not be perfect.

Personally, when I cannot avoid such things, I cover the problem with either a transition or a piece of "stock" video recorded earlier just in case. So, live concert in church, somebody drops the music score, but the sound is OK - cover the video with a fade in/out to a stained glass window (or whatever). More difficult with continuous audio that has gone missing, but I have often just used another (old) camera for the audio recording then cut and paste as appropriate!.

Cheers

Hi,

This is a problem with these memory card avchd cameras - my Canon Vixia does the same.

Either try capturing it with the Pansonic software that came with the camera (or check their website and download it) or else try using TSmuxer and "join" them see the steps in post 2 in this link:

https://www.avforums.com/threads/best-way-to-join-merge-mts-files.1577038/

This is the method I use as the Canon software that imports the files also does not join the longer recordings. The above method also seems to keep the audio in sync.

It is a pain to have another step in the process!

hi hoenderbiker!

Thank you, I'm trying tsMuxeR and I hope to be able to solve the problem by joining the five files into one. I'm working... ciao!

Yes! I joined five fles with tsMuxeR, I obtained one file .m2ts and PD14 imported it without problems and no audio/video frames lack. Thank you to all people helping me in this post!
